Fixing the Chiefs
Currently the Chiefs are a mess and they need work. I know I am not the GM, but if I were this is how I would fix the Chiefs and why.
1. Draft a QB with our inevitable Top 5-10 pick. In a perfect world that QB would be Luck (since he is clearly the best QB in the draft in spite of what some might say). Since we don't live in a perfect world I would go with RGIII first followed by Barkley. To me RGIII and Barkley are very similar when it comes to intangibles (based on what I keep hearing and reading about the two), but RGIII is the better runner so he gets the nod over Barkley. Keep Cassel though, but strictly as a back up primarily for mentorship purposes. Cassel is a natural leader and would make a good mentor, just he has no talent so he should not play except in an extreme emergency. We keep him one year and make Stanzi #3 (except he actually suits up as a #3), and get rid of him the year after and make Stanzi our new #2.
2. Keep Haley I know this might be unpopular with many but I don't really see anyone else out there who would be a better pickup right now. Plus I think it is a crime that so little patience is given to HC's nowadays. It is win and win now or you are fired. The team plays hard for Haley and they believe in him. I think he will be a good one with more experience and I want him to be good with us.
3.Bring in a competent offensive coordinator and let Haley know that he needs to have the freedom to run the offense. I think Norv Turner would be a fantastic pick up. He is bound to get fired this year (barring some sort of miraculous turnaround in SD). He is a brilliant offensive mind, just a crappy HC.
4.Replace Romeo with a hungry young DC. I love Romeo and I respect his accomplishments, but I think the game is passing him by. This is a pass happy league and a QB's league. You can no longer play a "bend but don't break" defense. You need to pressure the QB and be in his face. If you don't have the pass rushers to do it, then you blitz more often. That was the formula for the old Philly defensive coordinator (the one who died as his name eludes me at the moment). Philly consistently was near the top in sacks and defense even though they lacked elite pass rushers.
5.Draft someone like Donte Hightower in the second round (where he is projected to go). Have him replace Belcher. To me you need stud MLB's on defense for it to run effectively. Look at Baltimore with Ray Lewis, or SF with Pat Willis etc...
6.Bring in a solid NT and rotate him with Powe. This defense needs a NT to replace Gregg after this year. I have overall thought well of Gregg's play, but he was a stopgap and not a long term solution.
7.Start Gaither at RT or find a replacement in FA or draft. Richardson has to go. We can keep him for depth, but his days as a starter need to be over.
8.Lilja needs to be replaced as a starter. Keep him for depth, but his replacement needs to be addressed in either FA or the draft.
9.Draft or find in FA Safety, RB, and TE depth. It became clear that the loss of Charles, Berry, and Moeaki showed how little depth we had at those positions. I am not sold on Battle, so I would like to see another pounder brought in to spell Charles.
10.End the TJ experiment once and for all Draft or find in FA his replacement. If the team thinks Bailey or Gilberry can hold down that position full time, then so be it. If not then we need a starter there to mentor them and rotate with them. Cut or trade TJ for whatever we can get.
11. Resign Bowe and Carr This should actually be priority #2, behind our QB situation. Carr is very underrated and I think the fivesome (if that is a word) of him, Flowers, Arenas, Berry, and Lewis make up one of the best young secondaries in football. That needs to be kept together. Bowe being resigned should be a no brainer. Pay the man. He is an elite WR, it just doesn't show this year because he has one of the worst starters in the league throwing him the ball. Give him a real QB and Offensive Coordinator and he will be worth every dime we give him. He has the potential to be a major diva, but with Haley here that has been all but mitigated.
12.Bring in center depth Start Hudson, let Weigman retire and bring in depth.
Now I know that is alot and some might not agree with all the decisions, but I think doing this will go a long way towards helping this team become a playoff team.
