Kiper's 1st, 1st round mock-AFCW-only

By Bill Williamson
ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper is offering his first mock draft in an Insider piece. Let’s check out his first-round picks for the AFC West teams:

11. Kansas City: Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still

My take: I wouldn’t have a huge problem with the Chiefs’ starting the Romeo Crennel head-coaching era with a dominant man up front. This defense is one or two players from being dominant. I’m just not convinced Still is going to be a game changer. I think the Chiefs would be tempted to take Stanford tackle Jonathan Martin at this spot. That’s a need area.

18. San Diego: Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

My take: The offensive line may be an area of immediate need if guard Kris Dielman, tackle Marcus McNeill and center Nick Hardwick don’t come back. So, this selection makes sense. But there is also a chance the offensive line question will be answered by the draft. If so, the Chargers would look for defense help early.

25. Denver: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

My take: I could see this happening. I think Cox will be a player Denver looks at and the way Kiper’s first round falls, this pick makes sense. Denver has long been looking for help in the middle of the defensive line and this pick would further build an improving unit.

Oakland traded its first-round pick (No. 17) to Cincinnati as part of the trade for quarterback Carson Palmer. Tags:Oakland Raiders

Don't like Still in our defense at all. A) Too tall and B) has those 'effort' and 'consistency' flags that lead to a lot of DTs busting out.

I don't mind rolling the dice in the 2nd or 3rd on a player like that because a lot of DTs have that issue - throwing numbers at the position can solve the problem. But throwing 1st rounders at that kind of player has only kicked us in the dick about 5 times over the last 10 years; I'm not interested in a repeat performance.

Mediocre fit in our defense, mediocre performance at college, questions concerning his work ethic and a ceiling that is good, but not great. Nah, not even a little bit interested in this guy at 12.

He's not too tall to play DE.

He is absolutely NOT a two-gapping nose tackle. I really don't know why Kiper assigned him to us. We're three deep at DE, four deep if we resign Gilberry.

His build is prototypical for a 5-tech DE. Not sure where you are coming from on this one...

I get the impression that Kiper's mocking him as a NT, not a 5-tech.

Besides, as much as it pains me to say it, Jackson has become a starting caliber player. Dorsey is as well. If Kiper thinks we're targeting STill, i believe he has us targeting him as a 0.

He's too tall to keep consistent leverage as a 0, IMO.

For their first round pick the Raiders went to the way back machine and selected Carson Palmer. Results of the trip are questionable at best.

No way do we draft a defensive lineman unless it's a 0?

BossChief 01-19-2012 06:08 PM

Kiper must have been drunk.

That would be a terrible pick

No to another defensive tackle with our first pick.

Haha. I didn't read the other AFC West picks, read the first sentence of this post, and then went and looked to see why he didn't say the position. Only THEN did I realize and put together why Noe is such a weird first name.

Sweet another first round d lineman. We're really good at picking those

rtmike 01-27-2012 06:23 PM

Not all the AFC W teams are shown?

Oh wait...nevermind. LMAO

Is Devon Still related to Art Still, perchance?
