If we were going to just backup a Brink's truck, we could have done that at any time. Why not do it earlier so that we could use that cap room during the prime Free Agency period?

Because originally what Houston wanted was probably higher. So they negotiated, and with other areas of the offseason, ie the draft, free agency, Andy eating barbecue, they now found time to get the contract done. Then, now, in reality it makes no difference. 50 is a chief.
