Why didn't we sign Houston months ago?
If we were going to just backup a Brink's truck, we could have done that at any time. Why not do it earlier so that we could use that cap room during the prime Free Agency period?

Theres probably 100 different reasons why, reasons we'll never be privy to.
Shuffling around that much money cant be easy. |

Because originally what Houston wanted was probably higher. So they negotiated, and with other areas of the offseason, ie the draft, free agency, Andy eating barbecue, they now found time to get the contract done. Then, now, in reality it makes no difference. 50 is a chief. |
Because Alex Smith sucks

Ian Rapoport reported last week that they tried to sign him back in October for (wisely) less money. It was likely around the time he had 12 sacks in 8 games, thus he turned it down and essentially bet on himself.
It paid off, literally. You have to consider all of the things that can happen in the months from April-July before just handing the money out (see Jason Pierre-Paul). They played it just right. |

The same reason that Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant signed at the last minute - deadlines provoke action.

Maybe he didn't want to sign so he could skip all the off-season crap.
