Chiefs confident Sammy Watkins, Patrick Mahomes are “starting to sync”

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...rting-to-sync/

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins hasn’t caught a pass through the team’s first two preseason games and he failed to come back for a Patrick Mahomes pass that could have been a touchdown.

Coach Andy Reid noted that Watkins needs to do a better on plays like that, but he didn’t show much overall concern about how Watkins is fitting into the offense in his first year with the team. Reid said he loves Watkins’ “intensity on learning all the little, small things” and has seen that translate into good things at practice.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a similar take and said that he’s seen signs that Watkins and Mahomes are striking up a strong relationship.

“When it’s all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said, via ESPN.com. “He’s doing a great job. He’s accepted the challenge because we’re not just playing him at one position. He’s accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players. I know everybody wants to talk about what’s happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

Mahomes agreed with the coaches about Watkins making strides even if they haven’t shown up in games. That’s easier to sell in preseason than in the regular season, which leaves the Chiefs with a couple of weeks to get everyone in line.

If i had to go off nothing but what we've seen in camp and preseason thus far, Demarcus Robinson looks like a better receiver.

Also not being paid $34M over the next 2 years.

I think Robinson could provide 70% of Watkins’ production at 1/20 the cost.

I think Robinson has maybe moved in front of Conley on the depth chart to #3. I haven't paid a ton of attention to Conley through camp, but all I know is we have a ton of talent at WR this year and he better step it up if he wants to keep his spot.

Watkins
Hill
Robinson
Conley
Kemp
Dieter/Chesson

That's a hell of a group.

I feel like when you have to come out and say stuff like this, it's not happening.

First major flub of the Veach regime. Our secondary is absolutely horrendous and we spent 16m annually on a 2nd tier WR.

Talk is cheap Sammy.

I haven't seen one thing from him to be overly optimistic. He sleep walks through plays and just doesn't seem like he's fitting in with the club.

But, games don't start counting for 2 more runs either.

Yep. In addition to DB help, could also maybe have gotten a decent starting LG.

Pretty much. Not exactly reassuring if they're just now starting to sync...

And there are some concerns...

We paid way over what he will produce. There is only one football to go around and hes like the third option. His price will go down in KC history as a total waste. Maybe im way off but he would have to be balling out hard for it not to be.

It's weird, for years we've always wished to have better WR's and such.

But it's almost detrimental it seems when it gets to a certain point.

Any thought to having to learn Andy's offense? Theres always talk about hot complex it is. Maybe thats whats holding him back. Maybe Andy needs to stop over complicating this shit.

Maybe he just sucks, who knows.
