After the Super Bowl BS: When to Go for 2

During the Super Bowl, I barely had any cognitive function left by the time Toney had his incredible Mr. Fantastic body bending punt return to set us up to take an 8 point lead in the fourth quarter.

When Moore scored, I realized that if Andy had a 2 pt. conversion call he liked, he could go up 36-27 and give the Chiefs a 2 possession lead in the fourth quarter.

Obviously, that sort of call is atypical of Reid -- AND it worked out as I was verybhappy later that he didn't go for 2. Weirdly, I like Reid and Patrick even more tied 35-35 with 5 minutes left than I do up 36-34 with 5 minutes left.

But, it got me thinking, in the era of longer extra points, do you think coaches might be willing to go for 2 to go up 9 and give their team a 2 possession lead? Or do you think coaches would prefer the 8 point lead and put the burden on the other team to nab the 2 pt. conversion to tie it?

(We actually had this scenario play out against the Raiders this year. We went for 2 when we were a yard out and didn't get it. The Raiders then tried to go for 2 to win the game, and got stuffed - eventually giving us the win).

Depends on the opposition. I like Andy's decision, because if Sirianni scored again, he was going for 2.

Pretty sure for Andy it's fluid, dependent on the situation in that particular game. I didn't have a problem at all with just taking the XP in that situation, but I probably would've been good with a 2-pt conversion attempt as well, considering both how the defense was playing in the 2nd half and just how efficient the offense was inside the 5 by that point.

Put the burden on the other team.

I'd have gone for 2 myself as I always lean to the side of trusting in Mahomes with the game on the line. Going up 9 would effectively have secured it.

Regardless, going for 1 is certainly defensible in that spot.

Yeah, I definitely wanted to go for 2 there, and I'm certain we would have converted. But I ain't mad at taking the point. Either way we were in a pretty good spot.

Chiefs tried a 2-pt. conversion earlier this year when the lead was seven after TD and before the try.

Conversion attempt failed.

We tried it earlier in the year against the Raiders and didn’t convert, but I would have liked going for it on that last TD with the way our offense was rolling.

Point chasing usually ends poorly. It's why the xpa exists. Otherwise, teams would go for 2 every time they score.

Also understand that the Kansas City Chiefs were like, the WORST at short yardage this year.

3rd and 15? 20+ all day.

3rd and 1? Hilarious fail and punt.

Somebody should yes

He also should have never kicked a FG on the 4th and 2

Just because they win does not mean he is beyond reproach

Sirianni had a great game until his knees wobbled and he punted on 4th and 2.

These really shouldn't even be decisions. You should know what you are supposed to do. Andy has always been a little old as school in this regard but he gets away with it because hes the best offensive schemer of all time

4th down bot had the Chiefs 4th down at basically even versus FG. Had that eagles 4th down at go for it in their own end. I was very relieved when Sirriani punted there.
