Colin Kaepernick gets over $100 million new deal
This changes everything
|
@AdamSchefter: Colin Kaeprnick's 6-year deal is worth $110+ million, per sources. Heavy guarantees, too. Record guarantees.
|
Hope Tyler Bray or that Georgia Kid with the hot girlfriend turn out well. Yikes.
|
Interesting.
Seems a bit high. |
The prevailing thought around here is Smith is better, no?
Could be $20+mil/year for Smith now |
They'll regret that one.
|
60 mill in guaranteed money.
|
Colin Kaepernick was an unknown commodity two seasons ago, a backup quarterback behind a division champion starter. Now Kaepernick is a true franchise quarterback, with the contract to prove it.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms on a six-year mega extension through 2020 that will pay the signal-caller up to $126 million. The deal includes $60 million guaranteed. Kaepernick was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him under $1 million. |

To be specific, the Kaepernick 6-year extension includes $61M guaranteed, the highest ever. |
chiefs shouldnt overpay for Alex Smith. Franchise him in 2015 if they have to. Carry 4 qbs if they have to.
Wonder if Smith's agent or his ego will allow him to make less than Kaep? |
so will Kaep be the new 'no touch' QB much like Manning and Brady were when they signed their huge deals?
|
Wow, so what's Russell Wilson worth then?

61MM guaranteed. Let that sink in
|
set for life. just like that.
|
LMAO
That's the reward for his 4th quarter in the NFC championship game I guess. |

The market for just decent QBs now is just insane.
I don't think KaeperINK is all that great, nor is he bad. he's just decent. Just insane money now. I'll bet all the average/decent QBs from the 70s/80s/90s are pissed they never "got paid" Posted via Mobile Device |
Another guy who got overpayed. Better them than us.
|
LMAO
So happy to not be a 49ers fan right now... I hate that douche. |

Hello franchise tag. |
all I remember of him is him being an option type qb. He may not be, but that's all I remember of him.

Geez oh petes. Looks like it has become common place to overpay your QB. Kaepernick is not worth that money. I don't believe he ever will be either.
We are so screwed now. Alex is going to get a deal that will be just below this in total dollars and hopefully half of the guaranteed money as well. Just stupid. |
Man i really hope he implodes and screws the 49ers for years.
|
I'm excited for the 2017 season when we trade for him
|
...and, wasn't Vernon Davis wanting a new deal too?

49ers have a ton of talent that is basically being redshirted. They are in fine shape.

FYI, this is an extention..not a new contract..so it is 7 years (not 6 years). 15-18 million depending on his hitting certain incentives. The only part of this that is a bit much is the 61 million guarantee.
I'm okay with this deal considering. |

And don't get me wrong, I like his story and I hope he has a great career. He's the kind of guy you pull for to keep developing and become a really good QB. That said there's a huge difference between pulling for a young QB and saying he's worth the most guaranteed money in the NFL... |
They can forget about keeping that squad together. One player eating up that much cap will cost them after this season. One of the reAsons Seattle was so good is because Wilson is cheap right now. Now they will give him 62 mill guaranteed.
|
this almost smells like something the Radies would do
|
I honestly think certain positions should have a cap against what can be given to them. Increasing the payrolls of these teams won't help when the QB is making 15% of the teams cap in one year, they'll just keep getting bigger deals. I don't think it's good business for the NFL if this continues and middle tier QB's are paid like they belong on the top 10 list of all time.

I'm not sure what to think about the NFL and its' cap etc.

Why do people think this cripples SF financially? 60 guaranteed means a 10 mil cap hit for the bonus fro the life of the contract. You could do a contract with reasonable numbers the first 5 years and a balloon at the end.
1. 10 mil bonus + 1 mil base = 11cap hit. 2. 10 mil bonus + 3 mil base = 13 cap hit. 3. 10 mil bonus + 3 mil base = 13 cap hit. 4. 10 mil bonus + 5 mil base = 15 cap hit. 5. 10 mil bonus + 9 mil base = 19 cap hit. 6. 10 mil bonus + 19 mil base = 29 cap hit (never realized, only on the hook for the 10 mil. With the additional tv revenue from the 4 european teams, it's a drop in the bucket). If he gets hurt you are scrwed, but they could be set at QB for the next 5 years for a reasonable cap hit each year. |

Why do people think he's not worth it?
Sure, he's not top tier, but he's not garbage either. He wins games and keeps his team competitive. What in your opinion should he be paid? Posted via Mobile Device |

31st ranked pass offense>$100 million
Yeah... they'll love this in a few years. |

If he did something stupid off the field, regressed, had a string of injuries they're tied to that money. Kap does not play safe - he wants to get every yard he can. |
$110M for a QB who averaged 200 yds/game last season.

I've often thought the NFL would be wise to add an additional tag for a player who is the true "franchise" player. It can only be applied one time to a player that was selected by the team in question to pretty much keep a fan favorite in his "home" city.
The trick is determining how the kid gets paid. I think a "franchise star" tag should enable a team to stick a player, such as Jamaal Charles, on the roster with a cap hit that's only the average salary for that position but the big money is paid totally from the league itself and for a set amount of money and time that applies to anyone with the "star" designation. Or, the "star" tag enables a team to pretty much write off all or most of the cap hit for the player but be negotiated with a deal from the club for however much they want to spend. |

Look at this aspect - lets pretend something happens and in 3 years he's not going to play anymore. For whatever reason. 12-15 mil guaranteed isn't an unrealistic number for that year. So with that money tied up you still have to find another QB. Can you really spend $25-$30 mil on the QB position and be successful?... |
