Missouri's Tax Holiday is this weekend.

http://dor.mo.gov/business/sales/taxholiday/school/

Springfield and Greene County (where I live) have opted out of the holiday, meaning they will still collect city and county taxes. Appears that serveral cities and counties have. Maybe a road trip to KC is in order for the weekend. No taxes on clothes, computers, software, etc.

Rain Man 07-29-2013 01:17 PM

Wow. I've never heard of such a thing. Do other places have this?

No clue. It's only for school supplies, clothing (not accessories), computers, etc. that children/people would need for school.

DMAC 07-29-2013 01:20 PM

People need cars for school.

loochy 07-29-2013 01:26 PM

I need appliances and a new house for school

At walmart on bypass/sunshine there are signs all over the school supply area saying tax free Aug 2nd-4th. I wonder if Walmart is doing it anyway or if it was just printed on their supply shelves and they were too lazy to cover it up?

Titty Meat 07-29-2013 01:33 PM

It would make more sense to make it permanent

I don't know. Maybe stores can opt? Going by the listings on the DOR website. Not sure, but maybe Walmart has opted to not charge the customers but is still paying the city and county the taxes that would have been due.

I just called them. She said they are doing it and most businesses around town are too including JC Penney and Best Buy.

Im sure it is, you were probably right...businesses are probably doing it anyway and eating the tax cost to stop people from just ordering their stuff online tax free anyway or going to another county. I dont know though, she had no idea what I was talking about with Greene county/Springfield opting out so maybe it is wrong. Either way its a relief, I have 3 kids elementary to middle school to buy for.

That would be a LOT of taxes to pay without collecting though. Oh well. If stores are doing it, I may take advantage (even though I don't have kids).

The Earned Income Tax Credit Program works really well for that, along with deductions for children.

gblowfish 07-29-2013 01:53 PM

Good day to buy a new computer or IPad if you need one.

Bearcat 07-29-2013 01:57 PM

You would only have to spend $300-400 to save the amount in sales tax that it costs to drive here and back.

It's the best discount on new Apple products that you would probably ever see.

be sure that these places don't have a *excluding apple products displayed

also be sure that they don't inch up the prices to make a bit of extra profit from this

My wife bought an IPad from Best Buy on Tax Day last year. Saved enough to pay for a good chunk of extended warranty.

You read correctly. They are advertising that there is no state sales tax, even though your local city and county choose not to participate. Most cities and counties also suspend their sales tax for this weekend.

That makes sense. The walmart lady was probably talking about state tax. Is this the first year springfield/greene county has opted out? If its no state tax only its really not going to help much.

Demonpenz 07-29-2013 02:21 PM

this is bigger than black friday to me. I always go to best buy and put together a monster gaming system, then head over to TJ MAXX to get some polos and some Kaki's. It truely is a blessing.

alpha_omega 07-29-2013 02:54 PM

Thanks for the reminder luv. We were gonna go buy school supplies tonight...i think we will wait until friday at midnight.
