Solid State Hardrives
Anybody have a good source for them? I am looking to buy probably 2 256gb drives, may try to run them on Raid if I can on this Asus G73-SW
Most every year I buy a new laptop but this one has been so good I think I am just going to dump 16gb of ram in it and a couple of SSD's instead. |
last SSID I bought was through newegg, but that was a while ago. Maybe tigerdirect is rolling some Xmas deals? 256gb SSID's probably won't get the price cut too deep though
back when I was responsible for ordering more equipment, I like to use pricewatch.com to shoot for the occasional deal. |

While I am thinking about, what is the best software to use to clone my C drive now so I can use the SSD to boot to?
I will just use the 750gb 7200 rpm spinning as the backup. |
I've used Norton Ghost before that worked great for cloning a drive.

And yea, SSDs are amazing. You know how when you get a new computer and you expect it to be all super fast and it's really not like you expected? Well the SSD makes it like you expected. |

I bought this laptop 03/2011 and it still ranks in the top 2% on PcPitstop http://thumbnails108.imagebam.com/22...c228003017.jpg |

Make a couple copies so you've got another backup laying around and take one offsite. |

512 gigs of storage? No one needs that much unless they're downloading a bunch of porn or someth - Ohhhhhhhh. Never mind.

That's another thing, look at the image below, I rarely download any programs, have virtually all the same software I have been using for years.. How big of a SSD should I buy? http://thumbnails105.imagebam.com/22...6228040550.jpg |

This one was always rated highest or 2nd on every site I looked so I got it... Thanks for the help http://thumbnails106.imagebam.com/22...5228046971.jpg |

just use a SSD for your main drive and then have disk drive for storage

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147189 Just don't need that much will probably just run the OS on this and put data on the 750gb backup. I don't game so basically what I want is boot up time and shut down time as well as when the computer awakes. |

Make sure you're backing up regularly if you go this route. |

They are worth it though. I HATE rebooting my work PC because it doesn't have a SSD. I'm used to <1:00 boot times at home. |

Who has taken the plunge to windows 8 upgrade for 39.99? |

When it comes to an SSD dive, the Intel makes the best. They are the top maker of the NAND chips used in these drives, but they keep the best chips for their own drives and sell the rest off. Furthermore, they have the best firmware for the sandforce controller used in the majority of these drives.
Spend a little extra and go with an Intel 330 or 520 series. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820167127 |

Whether cloning works or not, while you'll have to spend time backing up files(which you should do anyways) and reinstalling programs with a fresh install, you get rid of bloatware and unused misc files, which is helpful when you're cutting your C-drive space by at least half.
