A good man. Had a no BS approach he would not have allowed the disgraceful defense we witnessed last season.

I didn't realize that he was working for PFF. Interesting article:

RIP Gun. Damn good DC.

Meanwhile -- "pallbearer". A "pall" is the heavy cloth that covers the casket. Not much of a thing anymore of course...

But anyway, it's NOT a bunch of dudes who carry guys named (among others) Paul. :D

Hammock Parties 05-13-2019 09:30 AM

And yet he still has more energy than Bob Sutton does.

I loved him...got out of his lane as a Head Coach, but dude brought fire. Anyone who can wear skeet shooting glasses and coach football is fine by me, and I think I learned half of my swear words from reading his lips on the sideline.

I always felt like he embodied in the fan base in the way he coached.

Sometimes he was a good coach, sometimes he was a shit coach, but I don't think there was ever a more dedicated or sincere coach who genuinely cared about this franchise beyond the paycheck as much as he did.

gblowfish 05-13-2019 09:59 AM

I was very fond of Gunther. He was in over his head as a HC, but he was a GREAT DC. And a fun guy to watch. He was a no BS guy, you knew exactly what he was thinking at all times.

yup.

I remember before a game when he came back to coach defense for Vermeil we were in the EZ and he came up and told us to make sure and yell our heads off and not be like the wine drinking pussies in the nice seats. LMAO

And then Fat Scott tried to humiliate him by accusing the Lions of having improper contact with Chiefs players via Gunther.

If force of will could have returned the modern NFL to the classic NFL, Gunther's would have done it. But the modern NFL has greater forces behind it.

Exactly. He honored every tradition not just to kiss ass he truly believed and loved it just like he did Lamar. They gave him his first and only HC job and he damn near drove him self insane but he never quit and he gave it all he had, not just talked the talk but walked the walk. His kids were devastated when DT died. He did better than many would have in such a situation in that second year especially.

alpha_omega 05-13-2019 10:12 AM

RIP sir.

Marcellus 05-13-2019 10:14 AM

I don't think it can be overstated how much Derrick Thomas' death affected Gunther personally. I think that's why he failed as a HC, it took him a long while to get over that.

kc rush 05-13-2019 10:22 AM

Not a great coach, but I always loved the passion.

RIP Gun

booger 05-13-2019 10:22 AM

Other than Pete Carroll he was probably the best understudy under George Seifert who talked him into being a coach at Oregon while Carroll learned under George in SF. That’s where he got the 97-98 falcon D. Was just a 4-3 under with the Leo spot which was called the elephant originally with Charles Haley in SF and Dallas. Since he never ran any 3-4 his 4-3under years with DT where always the best choice to maximize his talents

Randallflagg 05-13-2019 10:38 AM

Damn....younger than me...

I had the pleasure of talking to Gun on several occasions - believe it or not, at the Price Chopper :)

That guy would stand and shoot the shit with the fans as long as they wanted to. He was, in all honesty, a fine gentleman and a people person.

Coach - you WILL be missed.

RealSNR 05-13-2019 10:38 AM

This legitimately makes me kind of sad. Damn.

RIP, Gun

siberian khatru 05-13-2019 10:39 AM

I think Gun's signature moment was in 1997 against the Bills when he blitzed Todd Collins four straight times from the 10 at the end of the game to secure the win.

RealSNR 05-13-2019 10:39 AM

The guy probably knew more swear words than any man in KC

I loved it when he flipped the bird to one of the officials. Can somebody please post that gif of him? That was a classical moment in this organization.
