This Chiefs team overcame playoff failures of the past

I was thinking about how this game was a microcosm of our past heartbreak. Missed kicks by Elliot and Butker. Pass to himself by Marriotta and Mayfield, A second half lead in danger because the offense couldn't score against Indy and Cleveland, and a concussion on Montana and Mahomes. I gotta admit. I had some serious PTSD with all of that going on and I thought for sure that they were going to lose. But this time it was different. Mayfield didn't score a TD on that tipped pass, Butker made just enough kicks to keep the lead, Henne made plays to keep the clock moving, and Andy Reid had the courage to go for it on 4th and short at midfield to ice the game. Man. It sure is nice to be on the winning side. This team truly is special.

Spott 01-18-2021 06:05 PM

After the missed FG at the beginning of the second half, it felt a lot like that Titans playoff game in 2017. We had a comfortable lead that was slowly slipping away and it just felt like it was going to be the Chiefs of the past, especially when Mahomes went down. The culture of this franchise really seems to have changed for the better.

CaliforniaChief 01-18-2021 06:06 PM

It was a gritty win for sure, but they should have buried the Browns after Tyrann's INT. First team offense just needed a TD to put the score at 26-3.

KCJake 01-18-2021 06:53 PM

The past playoff collapses are so embedded into my DNA that everytime something starts to go south I enter full panic mode. Nobody I'm watching the game with understands it. Ever since we drafted Mahomes the culture has just changed so much. We win these nail biters now. We're never really out of it. It's just SO DIFFERENT and still so new that I can't help but revert back sometimes.

MahiMike 01-18-2021 07:05 PM

Was talking about this today too. They really know how to rise up to seize the moment. So may guys playing above their normal level. That's the true sign of a winning team.

carcosa 01-18-2021 07:29 PM

Exactly how much "past" would you say there is, generally speaking?

Hammock Parties 01-18-2021 07:32 PM

It was also the no punt game!

Roughly 28 seasons from 1990-2017.

Lol.
Forget that past. Mahomes now 5-1 in the playoffs, hopefully 7-1 at 25 in just his third season starting. By next season he could be on the doorstep of the top 10 in all time wins, up with Brees, Wilson, Kelly, Marino, Young, Eli, who have 9. Bradshaw, horseface and fivehead have 14. Could be halfway there this season. Incredible.

After that Montana 16, Brady 32. At 25 Brady and Montana had 3 with one super bowl.

We're exorcising playoff demons left and right.

RedinTexas 01-18-2021 08:25 PM

I told a friend after the game "I feel like we lost." That feeling stayed with me until I got up this morning.

A FG would have helped too.

Pitt Gorilla 01-18-2021 08:39 PM

LOL Our D wasn’t losing that game.

Mahomes cures all...I'm starting to think Mathieu does too!

You weren't the only one.

J Diddy 01-18-2021 09:28 PM

I can't watch kickers since Lin Elliot. I literally leave the room. That saved me 4 points worth of heartache yesterday.

Exactly, this has been a thing for a while now. Of course, it all goes out the window when Mahomes leaves the game, too.

Before that there were your approximately 10 normal, garden variety demons who couldn't play defense/offense or at time both.

scho63 01-19-2021 05:44 AM

I was calm as a clam during the entire game. Winning the Super Bowl last year took away 50 years of immense pain and suffering so I feel free to enjoy the Mahomes Magic or Henne Houdini.

njchiefs 01-19-2021 06:01 AM

Hunt pulling that sleeping on the couch end zone stunt, iced it for the Browns. Don’t piss this D off. I knew they weren’t scoring again.

Did your friend tell you that you're a goddamn idiot for feeling that way?

Seems like a rather emotional response. It sounds like you're compensating for the way you were feeling.

So it was Alzheimer’s that made you feel that way? ;)

Another aspect, the missed 2nd INT. How many times were we on the verge, when an INT that almost happened but didn't, then the deluge . . .

That missed INT still resulted in a TD, but we tightened back up.

Yep, Time to go full circle, How fitting will it be to go back to back Super Bowl's by knocking off the Bills?

I was thinking that same thing when it happened, although that would have been a tricky catch considering the way it was deflected. It wasn’t near as bad as the one Kevin Ross had in the playoff game against Buffalo in the early 90’s.

About 600 years. You know the time since the earth cooled.

stevieray 01-19-2021 08:46 AM

I'm not gonna lie, when Pat went down I got the horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, just like losing to Indy in Indy.

Defense held, Henne scrambled for the first and it was gone, just like the Browns chances to win.

Most of the times I recall, it wasn't so much the missed INTs themselves, they were often 'tricky' or hopeful as well. The pain was how everything fell apart right after hope spiked. How often it marked the start of the decline that went from fairly sure win to collapse.

Gravedigger 01-19-2021 09:05 AM

There's no guarantee that Josh Allen stays in this form next year and beyond, especially if his OC gets a HC gig. Lamar buckled under the pressure he setup for himself last year so Allen could do the same. Better to establish dominance this Sunday night to set the tone for years to come in case Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes is the next Manning/Brady.

Same here.

I was nervous all day but not worried, even when Cleveland started the comeback.

Then Mahomes went down and I just felt sick.

RunKC 01-19-2021 09:07 AM

Not gonna lie my Chiefs PTSD came back in full force once Patrick left the game.

It felt like the Titans disaster in 2017 and that Henne INT certainly didn’t help. But oddly I was mad at Butker as much as anyone bc that missed XP was crucial. All we needed was a FG to go up 9 instead of potentially 8.

Good thing Henne and the defense came through at the end bc man that would have sucked to see your season end that way.

Ouch!

InChiefsHeaven 01-19-2021 09:22 AM

It was one of those games where I was mad that Butker missed 4 points. But...I was not enraged. I was more annoyed. Then, when Patrick went down, I just sat on my couch staring blankly at the screen. My buddy came over to watch with me, and we were both just...stunned. I finally said "Welp..." and he just said "Yup"...

Then Henne came through at the end, after throwing a horrible pic. Then later, takes a horrible sack. It was all on him to somehow pull a rabbit out. Then the scramble on 3rd and forever...I honestly thought he got that first down, but upon review, his elbow DID hit the ground about a half yard short. So then, I'm going through the scenarios of eating clock, taking the penalty, punting away to the Browns who have no time outs left. We could be good here. I mean, the Browns have no time outs, it's should be a long way to go for a TD, Baker Ma...WTF? We snapped it? Holy shit, Tyreek!! AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Then the whiskey flowed and all was well again.
