(Again if posted sorry)

Thomas Semi-Finalist for Hall of Fame

Nov 19, 2004, 9:38:58 AM

The late Derrick Thomas, a nine-time Pro Bowler who played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1989-99, is among several first-year eligible players who head the list of 25 semi-finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2005. Thomas was chosen by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Selectors from the recently announced list of 90 preliminary nominees.
Thomas was the heart and soul of one of the league’s best defenses in the decade of the ‘90s. His drafting in 1989 by the Chiefs signaled the team’s revival as a legitimate NFL power. Over his career, he received many accolades including the prestigious NFL Man of Year honor and Byron “Whizzer” White Award. He was also named by President George H. Bush as the “832nd Point of Light”.On the field Thomas established team records for sacks, safeties, fumble recoveries and forced fumbles. He produced a club-record 20 sacks in 1990 including an NFL record seven sacks in a single game against the Seattle Seahawks. Thomas passed away on February 8, 2000 following a serious automobile accident in Kansas City. The list of semi-finalists will be reduced by mail ballot to 13 modern-era candidates. That list will then increase to 15 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the Hall of Fame’s Senior Committee. This year’s Seniors Committee nominees, who were announced in August, are two of pro football’s early pioneers – Benny Friedman and Fritz Pollard. The Seniors Committee reviews the qualifications of those players, coaches and contributors whose careers took place more than 25 years ago. The list of 15 finalists for he Class of 2005 will be announced in mid-January.

24th anniversary of his death. Peter Schrager did a really nice tribute to him on GMFB on NFLN this morning.

Still really tough for me to even think about. He just seemed so invincible. His death still doesn't even seem real to me after almost a quarter century. Still can't believe it happened and I try to avoid thinking deeply about it because it's still painful, like it just happened.

Yep, remember where I was when I heard it on the radio. We knew he was paralyzed and wouldn't walk again but for him to die was so unexpected. He was amazing.

I remember that day pretty well. Got off the school bus. Went inside my house. Turned on ESPN, just like normal and there it was. Pretty awful

I also remember hearing about Joe Delaney on the nightly news as media was antiquated back in the day. Was god awful.

This bring back memories? Thought I had a picture of DT sitting in the puddle but I must've lost it over the years.

Funny story, I was living in AZ going to ASU at the time and didn't get back to too many games. It was sunny that afternoon, but my stepmom wanted to stop at a Dillards or something to get ponchos because she heard it might rain. I was pissed because I wanted to tailgate and we were cutting it close, so I sat in the car pouting while everyone else got $3 ponchos. I got stubborn when it started to pour and didn't want to admit I was wrong - and I literally got soaked to the bone. Finally caved and went up to the concourse to buy a $3 poncho - which they had hiked the price to about $30 as they ran out of inventory. The final nail in the coffin was me being in the pisser when Andre Rison scored that long TD, which was basically the only highlight in a boring ass game. Not my best hour. ROFL

This was just one of many tragedies the Chiefs endured before Mahomes.

Mahomes is like a Wizard that came into town with a magic wand and wiped away nearly 50 years of BECAUSE CHIEFS suffering!

You young fans have no idea of the pain. (Just imagine being a Jets fan)

That's me on the far left, with my soaked fleece hanging over my $30 poncho. :D

True, I'll have no idea what the Marty days of suffering were like, but the 2000's and 2010's had quite their fair share of Because Chiefs suffering. It just permeated through time until Patrick Mahomes came to town.

I was in college killing time before a late night class. Went to a computer lab and logged in to the old Star board. Saw the sad news.

I went to the HOF induction. It felt a little hollow to me without him there. But it was nice to get to celebrate my favorite football player around other football fans.

I'm a little surprised that no media has run with that narrative, but I'm glad they didn't. This team has nothing to do with DT, and as great as DT was, I want no connection of the Mahomes Chiefs to any pre-Mahomes team.

You all are a little late with this narrative.

We shouldn't do this. I can see doing something like this:

15 (Mahomes) + 32 (Bolton) + 7 (Butker) + 4 (Rice)

or maybe

15 (Mahomes) + 38 (Sneed) + 4 (Rice) + 1 (McKinnon)

But there should be no connection between this team and teams that didn't win.

Not a connection to any team(s) that didn't win. A connection with a Chiefs' Hall of Famer who died way too young.

Schrager made that DT 58/SB 58 connection on GMFB this morning. I thought it was nice, honestly. He did a good job with his entire tribute to DT.

I still can’t believe we lost that 7 sack game.

Just the same name, jerseys, helmets, play in the same stadium.

There's no Chiefs fan anywhere of the DT era that sees the number 58 and doesn't get at least a flash of Derrick Thomas.

This is a bit silly.

Should've been an 8 sack game for Derrick

Defense has really stepped up this year to help get the chiefs to SB58 too. In fact I don’t think it would be a stretch to say we might not be in the SB without the defense this year. It makes for a heart warming storyline. I’m here for it

That is a perfect example of what "Because Chiefs" is all about.

I remember that game so well. He just missed another sack as Kreig slid up in the pocket and fired a rocket into the end xone for a TD. I think Rob Thomas caught it.

The no TD game for the Steelers against us stands out, beating the undefeated Packers one year, beating the undefeated 49ers with Steve Young was another, the Derrick Johnson strip sack of Mariotta was that a fumble bit stolen from us, no punt playoff loss, I could go on and on.
