at least they better :harumph:

Mr. Laz 01-25-2005 06:35 PM

a key season indicator game considering it's baylor

how they rebound from loss and t'will be interesting to see if KU's problems really are JUST effort like Self says.

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 06:36 PM

Baylor is improved from years past, and next year they will be a good team IMO. However, I think this KU team is PISSED...and will win by 15+.

Bob Dole 01-25-2005 06:36 PM

Has Rich Scanlon joined the team yet?

Rumor on the Star BB was that he was going to be in Lawrence this week and might be ready for this game.

yea... but i'm worried that "pissed" isn't the answer

no offensive sets executed, no fast break plan and bad shot selection isn't going to be solved by more energy and being pissed.

imo discipline, polish and gameplan seems to be the real issue.

7-0 KU.

i think KU is mentally tough and scrappy ... they have talent and heart

they are also pretty tough on defense

all good things

but the haphazard way they run their offense is pretty bad. They don't seem to have any "feel" for passing and what the other guys are going to do.

is that because Self is all defense and attitude and we don't have much of an offense???

i don't know ... but it's ugly regardless

not to mention almost the complete ignoring of fast break basketball.

KU's fast break game consists almost completely of giving the ball to miles and letting him drive the length of the floor. Every once in awhile they try that "long bomb" pass... but that just sucks.

Langford with the rebound, Simien misses.

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 06:52 PM

Alec you pussy. You are only a few hours from Waco. Why aren't you at the game?

Bob Dole 01-25-2005 06:53 PM

Gotta switch back and forth now between the :ksu: womens game and this game.

Im just a college basketball fan. I dont like any other college sports. U of H has some good games here and I go to them on occasion.

If I liked baseball, there would be Rice downtown, they got a good baseball team.

If you dont leave in the dead of rush hour traffic you can make it in about 3-3.5 hours or so if you started in downtown Houston.

I live in Dickinson and work in Clear Lake, which is south of Houston. I get off work at 5 pm and unfortunately I am not able to just leave work whenever I choose to. Its a good thing because I would likely rarely work in such circumstances, instead choosing to stay home and smoke bud and surf the internet, however my job is not so cool as I can do all that.

:sigh: I was hoping KU ended up in teh Austin division in the tourney, but right now it doesnt look like it (according to ESPN Bracketology). We'll see though, maybe I can make it to one of those games.

Alec R 01-25-2005 07:14 PM

Miles for 3, 30-19 KU

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 07:18 PM

That Bracketology thing is about as accurate as me predicting the fields right now. Don't worry, Alec. If KU plays well and garners a top (1 or 2 seed) they will end up wherever they can make the most money...ie, Austin or Chicago. The closest regions.

Personally i'd like to see them seeded in Indianapolis in the early rounds. I've got friends there I could stay with if I decided to go to a game.

I want KU to kick UNCs ass in the tourney.

Alec R 01-25-2005 07:25 PM

41-26 KU, 13.7 seconds Baylor ball

I guess about as much as chanting air-ball after one is shot.

Eleazar 01-25-2005 08:07 PM

damned KU game on the radio screwing up my listening to Savage :bang: :cuss:

BigVE 01-25-2005 08:07 PM

I wonder if OUR students would yell something like "player was a murderer" ?? Our old favorite 4 syllable chant was "lick my ball-sack". I used to laugh when the opposing teams would yell "harry potter" at Heinrich when he was here.

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 08:11 PM

At the MU game we yelled "****ing Cheaters". I guess thats not too creative. My favorite "chant" is the famous "left, right, left, right..etc etc" thread when someone fouls out.

BigVE 01-25-2005 08:12 PM

Oh heck, we had a TON of 'em for MU but I cant think of any right off hand.

BigVE 01-25-2005 08:17 PM

oh, and by the way: 7:26 to go and KU is up by 19pts. Ho hum.

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 08:34 PM

16 3 pointers made...bejesus.

Saulbadguy 01-25-2005 08:35 PM

86-66 Final. Like I said..KU was pissed.

KU sure tried alot harder to run an offense in this game ... i'm glad

looked rusty, but they need to keep trying ... by tourney time maybe they will have it together.

WTF? They make 16 3 pointers and they are rusty? Their inside game could have used a little polish, but they scored 86 points....

You KU fans are NEVER pleased! :)

Well, I guess I understand. Hawkins only has one good game a year, and this was it.

the "Rust" i was talking about was when they were trying to actually run and offense.... not when they were jacking up 3's all over the place.

Didn't he get his cornea scratched in teh Kentucky game? He hasn't played much since then.

Self is also pretty consistent about not playing guys who have not practiced well. Maybe he's had a bad week of practices.

he had a big man running the baseline for possible lob pass tonight

ROYC75 01-25-2005 09:33 PM

This is one of the strangest KU teams of late to figure out.

They have the talent.

Saturdays performance against Villanova was just one of those any given days.

The performance tonight was not stellar by any means, KU was hot outside tonight, if we would of had a cold night shooting, it would have been single digits win /loss.

royr17 01-25-2005 09:53 PM

Wow what a game, 16 3-Pointers a new team record, and what a game by Jeff Hawkins, Damn.

Lzen 01-25-2005 09:56 PM

I don't think it was due to just hot shooting. They made the extra pass tonight. They also played better on the defensive end. Giddens, for the most part, didn't jack up everything. He waited for the good shot. I would like to see more transition easy buckets and better rebounding, though. But all in all, KU crushed a team that they should've crushed. They played as a team in doing so.

yep ... i hope they continue to try on the offense end

They must keep passing and moving without the ball. It will really start paying off in the long run. Soon they will get better at it and the offense will really start to develop.

A quote from Langford that pretty much backs up what I said last night:

Quote:

"To someone who doesn't know basketball, they'll think Kansas did good because they made 3-pointers," said senior Keith Langford.

"But we got Wayne (Simien) involved in the high post, stretching the defense out, getting touches on the baseline, moving the ball fast -- that's what sets up the shots. It's not just sitting out there and making 3-pointers."
And Self said:

Quote:

"Most of our 3s came on inside-out passes," Self said. "Once you get the ball in the middle of the zone, it collapses and you'll have a better chance to have an open look. The guys did a good job attacking it."
Source

Lzen 01-26-2005 10:19 AM

FYI, KU fans

Quote:

ESPN's Game Day crew will be in Lawrence Saturday for KU's home game against Texas. The crew will set up in the lobby of Allen Fieldhouse on the tiled 'K' embedded in front of the trophy case on the east side.

After examining the fieldhouse prior to the season, ESPN decided to originate from the lobby because there was no where to put its crew inside the arena. The GameDay crew consists of host Rece Davis and analysts Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps. They will conduct telecasts at 10 a.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Dick Vitale, who will serve as analyst for the game, also will appear.

Due to limited space, the fan group chosen for the 10 a.m. telecast will be the first 40 groups of KU student campers. The night shows will be limited to ticketed fans attending the game.

That's the most effective offense in basketball IMO. The key is to have guards and forwards who aren't afraid to attack the basket. When the D collapses, kick it out for the open jump shot. Coach K has built a career on it at Duke.

Bearcat 01-26-2005 11:33 AM

Anyone remember the Texas Tech game last year? KU was in the middle of their identity crisis, but went on the road and put up like 90 points on Texas Tech (they might have hit a hundred  ). I haven't watched the Baylor game yet, but that was the type of game I was hoping to see from them last night. Doesn't sound like it was that good, but it's nice that there's a new level of focus on the offensive side of the ball, while getting back to good defense.

I've gotten used to the hi-lo, but I totally agree with the statement that they really need to concentrate on moving without the ball. They really get into trouble when they try to just force the ball inside.

Eh... a couple of weeks ago WF lost to FSU in OT because a WF player couldn't hit a couple of free throws to put FSU out of reach. Last weekend, a similar situation happened with that same WF player on the line at Cincy. The Cincy fans started doing the tomahawk chop.

Now that was funny.

ROYC75 01-26-2005 12:37 PM

KU needs to run the motion and hi-low , mix it up. It all starts with the guards, either offense.

Outside in, inside out, it doesn't matter if the guards don't penatrate, move around and able to hit the outside shot. If they aren't able to hit the outside, the defense will continue to collapse the middle.

My post about figure them out was this, thay have talent, they have the offense, they play better defense than most of the teams of the past.

Do the players have the desire and the heart or the belief that being in 2 of the last 3 Final Fours is going to get them there ?

Oh, no question they do.... however, they are just college kids, and they know it's a long season. We probably would have lost to Villanova had we played well.

It seemed like we were sleepwalking last year, and then we ended up peaking at the right time.
