Need a cheap Vacation

My wife will be done with Law School this spring. I can't wait to add a second income!!!!!!!! Anyway I would like to suprise her with a quick 4 day or so vacation. Where can I go for a reasonable price. I just want to go some place cool, to reward her.

Any Ideas, I'd like to keep it under 3K

Ghostof 01-28-2005 12:01 PM

Deadwood South Dakota.....then you could see Mount Rushmore, SPearfish, and all the other things, even go to Devils Tower

Hoover 01-28-2005 12:05 PM

It seem like everytime we go someplace it costs us 3K...

Anyway, unless the location is Chicago, KC, or the Twin Cities we will need to fly, she doesn't like to ride in the car. Can you even fly to South Dakota?

Now I would like to go to Vegas. She is not into gambling so I wonder, but there is a ton of cool stuff to do there.

I was also thinking about going to DC, for an extended weekend.

Rain Man 01-28-2005 12:06 PM

If it's only four days, you're not going overseas, I presume.

It's hard to beat Manhattan as a quick getaway. I stayed at the Algonquin Hotel recently for about $300 a night, and it's got a great location just off Times Square. You can walk to Broadway Shows, go check out David Letterman, go through Central Park, and eat some really good food.

My second choice would be Charleston, South Carolina, but I think you can get more action in Manhattan if you're limited to four days.

Mr. Kotter 01-28-2005 12:07 PM

Vegas.

Cheap and it has it all.

JazzzLovr 01-28-2005 12:08 PM

For a long time, I've wanted to go to Lake Tahoe. I like the whole quiet-cabin-on-the-lake thing, tho. If this vacation is a surprise for her, it really depends on what kind of vacations she prefers.

Yeah, we are both into that too, but we just went to Brithis Columbia again last year.

Deadwood is less than one hour drive from Rapid City's airport. You can get a taste of a mini-Vegas, coupled with cooler scenic beauty, and some interesting historic stuff too... :hmmm:

Skiing, snow-mobiling, fishing and hunting that you won't find in Vegas too.

I'm not sure how good an idea the surprise part is. She just might want a say in where she's going. And you should appreciate her input since she's smarter than you.

Ghostof 01-28-2005 12:17 PM

I plan on heading up to Deadwood and hitting all the sights in the area in a few more months, like May or June.

I-29 North to I think 90 West...

Btw,,,,DEADWOOD comes out on DVD on 2/8/05...just a few more days..Finally

I'm the smart one, I married her.

Rain Man 01-28-2005 12:19 PM

Here's what your wife would say if she was reading this thread.

New York is where I'd rather stay
I get allergic smelling hay
I just adore that penthouse view
Dahling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

BIG_DADDY 01-28-2005 12:20 PM

Vegas baby

Alton deFlat 01-28-2005 12:21 PM

Fly to Phoenix and stay with Delt. I love Phoenix.

Chief Henry 01-28-2005 12:22 PM

Iowa City or Grinnell or Sioux City

If it was me, I'd take her to New York.

If you want something completely different, go to Santa Fe and get a hotel on the town square. There are some great spas there for pampering oneself, and if you stay downtown it's a very unique city. It's also small enough that four days is a reasonable amount of time to spend there.

Ok, if you fly its going to cost you $300 per person round trip, and thats cheap.

So thats $600

You got to stay some place thats not a rat hole. Lets say $150 a night, 3 nights thats $450, so lets say $500 with taxes.

So we are at $1100 with out doing anything.

$100 bucks a day for food. Could it be cheaper? Yes, but we like to go out for nice meals when on Vacation. Lets say $300

$1400, plus any activitys

OK maybe I should look at doing this for $1500

More power to ya... it's just funny to hear that it's "cheap" compared to all the ways we tried to save to go on those trips while on a college budget. I love to travel, so if I ever get a job that allows it, I'm sure I'll spend lots and lots of money on vacations ;)

Rental car, souvenir t-shirts and refrigerator magnets, entry into some shows or exhibits or something, and you'll spend more on food than that. Maybe $2,000, but more likely $2,250.

Exactly. To me, "cheap vacation" means "within driving distance." For $3k, I think I'd be going on another cruise. :)

I don't see how NY is a good place to vacation. Bad weather, bad air, hard to relax by the beach/in the forrest.

You might take a look at taking I-70 west to Goodland and going north from there. I used to live in Lawrence and that route was much quicker(~3 hours). Better scenery too. The bonus is this: Carhenge

It's New York! Not just once, but twice! It's New York, New York! The Empire State Building, Broadway, cheap pizza, Madison Avenue, Greenwich Village, the Statue of Liberty, Seinfeld, Alexander Hamilton's grave, Little Italy, the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, subway adventures, Central Park, the Dakota, the Radio City Rockettes, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Guggenheim, Park Avenue...the list goes on an on. If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere, so here's to you, New York, New York.

I'm a big fan of the Black Hills. Very reasonable prices, and you won't find prettier country anywhere, IMO. Custer State Park is pretty much my favorite place on earth.

Getting there can be a problem, though. Flying is a pain in the ass since you have to hop a flight from a nearby hub city like Denver. Those regional flights can get expensive. I always drive (about 14 hours from Chicago), but obviously that won't work for 4 days, since you'll burn two travelling.

If you ever have more time, you really should check it out.

Brando 01-29-2005 01:14 AM

Did someone say cheap vacation? I'm going to Jamaica next week for free!
For what's its worth Dawes I'd suggest Lake Placid. If you want her to get away from it all and you want to take her someplace romantic it's the place to go.
Great small town with awesome scenery and the ladies love it so much they don't mind you dragging them around to see all of the Olympic stuff.
You can fly into Albany on Southwest pretty cheap, rent a car, and find a very cozy romantic B&B for a lot less then 3k.

bringbackmarty 01-29-2005 01:18 AM

take her to the crescent city. new orleans. It won't be too hot yet, you can get some great food, and book the fishing trip of your life for like 300 bucks. Art museums antique shopping old homes\plantation tours swamp tour, hornets games, titty bars gret live music.

Yeah you have to go out of your way to have a bad time in New Orleans. So long as you book your hotel early enough it can be pretty cheap.

The only time I worry about someone is when KCChiefsman is not making fun of you. If he is trying to call you out then you are doing something right.

It does not take to much to put him on the defensive, he then likes to post out of a pure inferiority complex.
