So he's come out of the closet. Good for him...

tk13 04-22-2005 12:16 AM

I don't know, I wanna say he looks too scrawny. Gonna be hard to sell that to an entire generation of people that has Christopher Reeve burned into our heads as Superman. Say what you will about the movies themselves, but I think Reeve really, really looked the part...

keg in kc 04-22-2005 12:17 AM

I always had trouble seeing Reeve as Superman because I thought he was...too scrawny. He fit as Clark Kent but looked wimpy as Superman. Although I liked the films. Or at least the first two.

Yes, yes, I know...geek blasphemy.

Good, I'm not a geek then 'cause I've always hated Superman...

I watched Hulk again a couple of weeks ago.

Still hate it.

Although my beef was more technical than anything else. I hated the editing. It distracted me from the film.

Superman II is one of my favorite movies... it's a "must watch" whenever I see it on TV.

Glad it's not Ashton 'tigerbeat' Kutcher.

God ! I hate that guy. No talent 'model' turned lame actor peckerhead.

Nice to see models with no skills or desire to work become actors.

Gravedigger 04-22-2005 02:08 AM

Why didn't they get the kid who plays him in smallville that was the best look alike I saw and he was cut like a washboard!

Son of Logical 04-22-2005 04:15 AM

That guy looks like a jackass as Superman. I don't know who they should of picked, but definitely not that guy. I was a kid when Chistopher Reeve played Superman, and that is how I will always picture Superman in my head. This guy looks way to scrawny to be Superman.

tk13 04-22-2005 04:18 AM

I was just reading about the movie, and I guess the plan is to kind of pick up this movie where Superman II left off. I don't know, sounds odd at first, but I like the idea. Superman II is one of my favorite movies though.

I always thought that Reeves was to feminine.
I hated that guy as SM.

I agree.
Tom Wellig really fits the roll.

And the guy that plays Lex Luther in the series, Michael Rosenbaum, is Lex Luther.

htismaqe 04-22-2005 05:14 AM

Routh is from suburban Des Moines, and I guess he's gay, which was a primary reason they cast him...evidently there's some kind of "agenda" involved with the movie...

A "gay" SuperMan?

Good God....... :shake:

Sparhawk 04-22-2005 06:40 AM

First I think that this is a slap to the face of actors like George Reeves and even Christopher Reeve. He not only doesn't fit the part but should not be playing the part in a movie that millions of kids will be watching. IMHO, that's just wrong.

Ultra Peanut 04-22-2005 06:57 AM

I'm always thankful of the insight I experience on this board. Before this morning, I never understood that being gay is much worse than committing suicide or supporting stem cell research.

Well, if that's what you gathered from my post, I apologize. That's not what I intended at all.

I am, however, disappointed that an openly gay director has decided to take one of my fondest childhood memories and turn it into a vehicle for advancing his personal and political agenda...

I'd give you rep, but it says I need to spread it around. I just hope we don't have Superman eating a bologna sandwich and having some mayo dribble on his chin.
I expect that if the director is persuing this angle, he will have alot of secondary characters played by gay actors as well. Oh Jimmy Olsen.

Nothing to do with you. I was referring to the guy who said "I think that this is a slap to the face of actors like George Reeves and even Christopher Reeve." I just found that statement pretty humorous with the kind of stuff Reeves and Reeve did.

I can't really say anything about that until I see the film. But I don't really care about the director, actor or anybody else being gay. I don't see how that's relevant in any way, unless, as you mention, they have some kind of agenda that in the end ruins the spirit of the source material. But, truth is, I don't imagine that either DC comics or Warner Brothers would allow that. This is a money-making venture first and foremost, and they aren't going to try to alienate any customers.

First off, I was referring to DC doing things to alienate customers. By any measure the last two Batmans were atrocious.

But you gotta see that Batman's costume became increasingly fetishized as the franchise moved forward under Shumacher. Batman went from a reticent caped crime-fighter to a buff bulging boy-toy. [TIC] I think he had plans to introduce the Orgazmo-tron in the next film.

I'd agree with you on Batman and Robin. The one with Val Kilmer I lactually iked more than the one with the penguin. But, either way, that's a bit of a tangent. Unless the studio said "hey, lets make these films suck" and DC said "alright, great!" that's a little bit different than giving Superman a gay theme.

As a sidebar, this is the first I've heard of any sort of intentional gayness with superman. Although I'm not exactly following the film that closely.

I'm not saying the director said "let's make it gay" or "let's make it suck."
Batman and Robin was clearly pitched as "a campy extravaganza."
Unfortunately, in Schumacher's hands, Batman in a campy extravaganza = gay = horrible movie.

I think that's still the worst movie I've ever suffered through in a theater. And that's saying something, because I've seen some real shit.

Well, living here in central Iowania the fact that Routh got the role is pretty big news. My brother is kind of an "insider" in the comic book industry, so I get some of this news from him...

Sure-Oz 04-22-2005 10:59 AM

I think Tom Welling is the best fit as superman but i guess his Smallville show and him being Superman in a movie wouldn't work so well.

Ultra Peanut 04-22-2005 11:04 AM

You guys are making a big deal out of nothing. Brian Singer is gay, but that doesn't make him some sort of activist or anything. Didn't you guys like "The Usual Suspects" or the "XMen" movies? His new Superman is going to be freaking awesome. Daniel Day Lewis, Kevin Spacy, Kate Bosworth, Jude Law... I can't see how these people can collaborate with an awesome director and make a bad picture. As far as the plot goes, I don't see how any "gay" theme can creep it's way in...

This movie takes place after Superman 2. It focuses on how resented Superman is after the destruction caused by General Zod and his cronies. Superman is gone for something like 6 years only to return to a world where evil and corruption have taken over. The synopsis I read specifically mentions Superman giving up his powers for Lois Lane in the second movie and how that will be a plot point in this movie...

Chiefs_Fan_n_64081 04-22-2005 01:25 PM

I've read a lot of stuff about the plot and story blurbs, and it may well be a disappointment.

Warning! Spoilers ahead. If you wish to remain in the dark about plotlines and the like, then don't read this.

Some confusing asspects about the conceptional end:

Superman is supposed to return to Krypton?

I thought that his home world blew up with it's red giant sun.

Lex Luther discovers the Fortress Of Solitude?

This already happen in Superman II.

When traveling in space Superman wears a special space suit?

The man of steel can withstand the harshness of the void, and has been shown in the the first two films doing so.

There is supposedly a new Krypton?

This is just plain silly, and does injustice to the orphan angle classical to the Superman story.
I wonder if this is an idea inspired by the miniture city of Candor [sp] from the comics?

Check the stars. Kate Bosworth is Lois Lane which means she'll have black hair which could be hot. Oh and also KEVIN SPACEY is lex luthor LMAO that could be ok but I doubt it.

Singer has said several times that he intends to use this movie to convey a "message". He's never openly said that he wants people to think Superman is gay, but he's hinted at it several times.

Reeves gave the best "comic book" perfomance ever. He was simply perfect as Clark Kent and Superman both. He will be tough to top.
