its official...Chiefs trade for Miami cornerback Surtain
Chiefs trade for Miami cornerback Surtain
By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star The Chiefs finally got their man. They completed the trade they worked on for almost three months, bringing veteran cornerback Patrick Surtain from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a second-round pick in this weekend's draft. Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said the clubs also will exchange fifth-round draft picks this year. “I think it's ideal,” Vermeil said. “If you want to get better on defense, having players with his ability make it a lot easier. We've just got ourselves a good cover corner, a proven big-time player.” The Chiefs and Surtain had previously agreed to the parameters of a seven-year contract, but terms of the trade with Miami needed to be worked out. The Chiefs had offered their fourth-round pick, but the Dolphins insisted on obtaining the second-round choice. The Chiefs didn't want to part with the pick, but believed in the end that acquiring the two-time Pro Bowler Surtain was a necessary step in upgrading their defense. “He's a quality player,” Vermeil said. “We could not have drafted a player in the second round who could make the kind of immediate impact on our defense that he will.” |

rufusmaqeno way we DON'T sign a starting CB. carlos3652We know we are getting either Law or Surtain as worst case scenario. I cant see Carl screwing this one up C-Macwe'll get a veteran CB before its all said and done. Mark my post! tk13No way Carl goes into training camp with those guys as our starters ChiefsCountryYes, we will get a cornerback one of the biggies and mid-free agent alanmTy Law will be a Chief. Special EdIt's just a matter of when, not if, that Surtain is a Chief. <HR SIZE=1> Laz is going to have to find a new sig line now. I'm sure he won't mind though. PBJ |
i'm surprised AND impressed ... carl swallowed his pride and gave the 2nd round pick.

Wow, that's fantastic. I'm looking forward to this coming season. Hopefully, we can add a decent LB or DE (to replace Hicks) and this will have been the best offseason in a long, long time. :)

AP Sports Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs reached a deal with Miami cornerback Patrick Surtain, coach Dick Vermeil told The Associated Press on Friday. The three-time Pro Bowler could go a long way toward shoring up one of the NFL’s worst defenses and allow Kansas City to use this weekend’s draft for other needs, such outside linebacker. A Chiefs spokesman said Surtain was still in Miami at midmorning, but would be in Kansas City later Friday to take his physical. “He is signed,” Vermeil told the AP, although the move ultimately was contingent upon Surtain’s passing his physical and the deal’s being approved by the league office. Also still to be done was the paperwork involving the trade with the Dolphins, who had been demanding a second-round draft pick as compensation for the man whose 25 interceptions the past three seasons lead all NFL cornerbacks. “I’m very pleased,” Vermeil said. “He’s an impact player who can help a defense that needs help. He won’t need any grooming or more experience.” Surtain will play right cornerback opposite Eric Warfield, who has been the only dependable member of a secondary that has been one of the most ineffective in the league the past three years. The Chiefs’ poor defense, near the bottom of the league, has wasted the consistent production of a top-flight offense that sent five players last season to the Pro Bowl. “We’ve given up too many big plays,” Vermeil said. Acquiring Surtain completes the aggressive plan general manager Carl Peterson had laid out to get a linebacker, safety and cornerback before the draft. Several weeks ago, Kansas City signed free agent middle linebacker Kendrell Bell and safety Sammy Knight, as well as reserve pass-rush specialist Carlos Hall. “Carl and his people have done a great job,” said Vermeil, who has said this will most likely be his last year as a head coach. “It’s very exciting to consider all the possibilities we have now.” |
I am relieved and happy. I never thought CP would pony up for a stud CB.
Now, imagine Johnson slipping in the draft. |

THANK GOD. :thumb:
But still, here's a residual 4321 to Carl for dicking around with this until almost the last possible minute. Considering how grueling a typical Chiefs game is, must the offseason be a high blood pressure-inducing pain in the ass, too? :banghead: |
I really didn't see any way CP would get this done. I'll say this, he had me buffaloed on the interview this week. In a poker game, He'd have caught me going all in with my 1010s
now.........will they draft at 15, or trade down to re-aquire a 2nd rounder? How far down WOULD they have to trade to pick up a 2nd? |
wow $14.5 Million Signing Bonus and 7-years over $50 million
Archie is so happy :) |

Please end up with the Raiders, so we can toast your sorry ASS!! |

Great news!!!! As far as I'm concerned we have had a good draft. Now if we can pick up a quality player at #15 and maybe a punter and some players to grow into starter that will be a great draft. I think this is our only year... it's now or never and at least we got a solid chance at making it special!!! Good Job Carl!!! |
You only need a punter if you intend to have to punt. I'd appreciated a 80% defense draft. Punters can be found in FA.

Matt Jones can punt! If we take him in the 1st we can use him as a punter and a WR! PBJ |
Good trade. Surtain is definitely worth it. He's a top notch CB, and he can both cover and tackle. Solid in run support.
But, of course, nobody can cover Moss 1:1, so don't expect to see that happening. |
this makes me feel better, but i dont get nuts excited anymore.
reflections of past seasons being the reason. |
It's about *$&%ing time!!
Good to see dickface get something right, for once. I was pretty sure he'd screw the deal up. Perhaps Gunther kicked some sense into him? |
Just wanted to chime in and say this is a great move for the Chiefs. He's one of the top corners in the game and brings instant credibility to the secondary. I'm glad carl sacked up and realized how good Surtain will be next year compared to our second roundr making an impact. Praise Carl for actually delivering on his promise this off-season. If feels damn good to know our FO actually made some moves to improve our team.
Hallelujah!!!!!! |
Hey. This is good.
This is really good. It's good above and beyond the trade itself, too, because now it clears us to take the best available player with the #15 pick. I'm hoping it'll be David Pollock, assuming that Rolle and Johnson are gone by that point. |

This is great news, made my weekend.
Now if there was some way Ty Law would sign a low $ contract AND return to complete health, with us, it would make my year. Not gonna happen, he'll likely sign with the Sliver & Back. |
YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
I heard this at work today on ESPN and the people I work with thought i had lost my mind. Carl,IMO had to do it for the 2nd.After the dumbass texans gave up a 2nd and 3rd for Buchanon and The jets gave up a first for Jolley. No way the dolphins took a 4th for Surtain. |
Another perk for trading the 2nd round pick is that Surtain will not be missing training camp.
:D |
Well, well, well.
Carl finally did it. I'll give him props for getting this done, and for the earlier signings of Bell and Knight. Now it's up to Carl to make the right moves in the draft tomorrow to continue the defensive upgrades. This really gives us options tomorrow. Carl still doesn't get a pass, though. He ain't won nuthin' yet. He does have the boat sailing in the right direction. |
