Idaho girl missing for 6 weeks found alive
 

CNN) -- An 8-year-old Idaho girl, missing more than six weeks, has been found alive and police have arrested a 42-year-old sex offender, a sheriff's department official said Saturday.

Shasta Groene was found at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene at about 2 a.m. (4 a.m. ET), a spokesman for the Kootenai County (Idaho) Sheriff's Department said.

Shasta's brother, 9-year-old Dylan, has not been located, but her great aunt, Sue Torres, told CNN that "Shasta's probably going to take us to him."

Kootenai County Sheriff's Department spokesman Capt. Ben Wolfinger said Shasta was accompanied by Joseph Edward Duncan III, a registered sex offender, who was being questioned by investigators.

Wolfinger said Duncan -- who has a Fargo, North Dakota, address -- was charged with kidnapping and there were two out-of-state warrants for Duncan.

Shasta is at the Kootenai Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman told CNN. Wolfinger said she was taken to the hospital "as a precautionary measure" and appeared "to be in generally good health."

The children have been missing since May 16, when their mother, a brother and the mother's boyfriend were found beaten to death in the mother's home.

A memorial service was held May 25 for 40-year-old Brenda Groene and 13-year-old Slade Groene.

Authorities said they and 37-year-old Mark McKenzie died from blunt-force trauma to the head. The last time they were seen was May 15, when they had a Sunday get-together with friends at the home.

Police have said they have no suspects in the deaths or the children's disappearance.

"We've always believed that if they were going to kill everybody in the house, they would have killed them and left them there," Wolfinger said in May. "But they didn't."

Authorities are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the return of the children or information that could lead to those responsible for their abduction. In addition, Kootenai County posted a $7,500 reward. (Full story)

An Amber Alert initially was issued for the children but was canceled because of the lack of new information in the case for five days.

Authorities described Dylan as 4 feet tall, 60 pounds, with crew-cut blond hair and blue eyes.



First off I want to say I am very happy this little girl is alive and safe now.

Next I want to rant about how these goddamn mother f**king child rapers are EVER let out after the first time they're caught. Screw that why are they allowed to live!

I couldn't agree more. The stinking media slobers all over stories about celebs ( all the jackson and Cruise crap lately) but ignore something like a family slaughtered and 2 missing young children!!

It got a little bit of play for a couple of days, I remember seeing their pics and my heart breaking for them. I really have only contempt and hate in my heart for anyone who would hurt a child. Someone should beat him to death, and I am serious about that. I would pay to watch. fuck his civil rights.

The media was all over this story day after day, but did not give it the full atention it desrved, they gave up. This is a true blessing, I am quite pleased to find that one of the children has been found alive.

If .. If ... If...

If they would make the punishments for heinous crimes so unspeakably horrid in nature that it would deter 99% of the offenders then I would be all for it. But you better make sure the law catches the right guy cause that would not be good to castrate a sex offender only to find out he/she was innocent.

Lets just say you are browsing the Sex Offender website and find out the one of your coworkers (or someone with the same name and address), is listed for 1st Degree Statutory Rape. I haven't checked this personally, but supposedly that means he had sex with someone 12 or under when he was 21 or older.

I so hope the little boy is okay, I have an uneasy feeling since he wasn't with his sister. How sad that they also lost their mom and brother and were not allowed to grieve for them....

I pretty much agree. How many kids have been killed by repeat offenders in the last few years? Cut their fucking units off. And if after five years that doesn't solve the problem, institute the death penalty for child molesters.

I know for damn sure a bullet in the head would deter at least the one who did it from doing it again.

A true hero is the food server in that Denney's Restaurent who called the police, than stalled the guy by giving the girl a milkshake, waiting for the police to get there.

No doubt she probably saved that little girls life.

And they were right there in town all along...:shake: and only miles from her house. I can't believe the crappy police work that went into this case. I am glad I live in Tx where they will hunt you down like a dog for something like this.:)

It said the plates on his vehicle were stolen out of MO a few days earlier. That means that they have been on one hell of a road trip. That is probably why no-one had seen them before now.

The boy probably tried to take up for his sister and tragically paid the price for that. We can only hope that the girl did not personally witness what happened to her family or brother.

Mother F**er I looked over his blog and he is a whining piece of shit. All he does is complain how bad it is that sex offenders have such a bad rap, and how people who want tougher laws and support offender registration are a bunch of nazis. And in one post he even says thae most sex offenders never repeat their crime, and that he is "a low risk of repeat offending". He is exactly why we need tougher laws, why these people should never have a chance to repeat offend. Life in prison no parole or death.

I'm sure I might have saw yours...I sat out on my patio with some paper and a pen to do some writing. There were several displays. I saw the Twin Oaks show from over the top of the Price cutter next door. There were fireworks everywhere!

I don't think there is such a thing as a deterrent for these sick fucks, they can't control themselves. The only way to deal with them is to fucking kill them or make them the prison bitch for the rest of their lives. I can't believe people still haven't learned their lesson and they keep releasing "ex-offenders" from prisons thinking they've reformed.
