Updated DV interview 8/17 - additional TYNES reax

TRAINING CAMP

Afternoon

Q: How was practice today?

DICK VERMEIL: “It started slow. But I took the pads off them and I think their first thought was pads off so we’ll relax. But once they got going it became a good football practice, but it took a little while.”

Q: Lawrence Tynes. Again, another player is in trouble.

VERMEIL: “He had a little misconduct and made some mistakes. It’s being handled properly, both from an organization standpoint and a coaching standpoint and a legal standpoint.”

Q: What does the organization do about something like that?

VERMEIL: “It varies, but we treat him like anyone who has his right to be heard and evaluated, especially since we know our players so well, especially the kids who have been around. The least likely to have a problem normally is your kicker and it isn’t always his fault. But automatically it’s their name because no one else knows anybody else who’s involved. That’s a price they have to pay and a discipline they have to learn to handle in different kinds of environments. Believe me, if the situation comes up again the lesson he learned from there will be to walk away.”

Q: You’ve only given them two nights off camp. Will you rethink that?

VERMEIL: “The NFL Players Collective Bargaining Agreement says you have to give them a night off. I gave them the full night off because there were a lot of wives and families who came up to see their husbands and to share a nice evening. That’s why I did it and sometimes there is a backfire.”

Q: Was Eric Warfield not here?

VERMEIL: “Eric Warfield’s back acted up on him so we held him inside.”

Q: Is that a long-term problem?

VERMEIL: “You know he had his back operated on and this is the first time in training camp it’s bothered him. It usually bothers him from time to time and if you rest it and treat it properly he gets right back.”

Q: How did Derrick Johnson look today coming back?

VERMEIL: “Pretty good. When you’re just in shells like we were today what you can evaluate is the explosive movement. You can see him flying around. You can’t coach that.”

Q: Is Craphonso Thorpe going to be out a while?

VERMEIL: “I don’t know. He’s got a little finger. Don’t get me started.”

Q: Will Shields did a little more today. Any chance he’ll play Saturday?

VERMEIL: “No, he won’t play but he’ll be ready next week.”

Q: You must be anxious to see him out on that playing field?

VERMEIL: “I am anxious. Like I’ve said all along, quality players like Will Shields are a head coach’s security blanket. You don’t worry about that position or the defender he’s playing on. You spread your thoughts over the other areas. He’s sort of the glue that holds that whole group together.”

Q: John Browning making any progress?

VERMEIL: “He was in for a second opinion today with Dr. Watkins and will be back tomorrow.”

Q: How do you feel about the progress of the defense?

VERMEIL: “We all think we’re better in training camp. I know just watching us against our offense that we appear to be better. We make fewer mistakes and give up fewer big plays. Variations of schemes and trick type things don’t break us down like they have in the past. I think we’re more alert. I think the discipline within the scheme is better.

“Will it pay off on Sunday, September 11? I don’t know. There aren’t any guarantees. We’ll have to earn it.”

Q: Any consideration to having Jared Allen be the long-snapper to create a roster spot?

VERMEIL: “No, huh uh. No. There was that kind of thought the first year with him but Kendall Gammon is too much a part of this football team. He’s too good at what he does.”

Hammock Parties 08-17-2005 10:01 PM

Man...this entire team is in the goddamn tub.

tk13 08-17-2005 10:04 PM

This team is crippled again.

teedubya 08-17-2005 10:05 PM

I think Im preparing myself for an implosion of a season... with the Royals sucking record ass... and the Chiefs off the field problems, factor in the pressure of this season to succeed, NOW. I think we are in for major disappointment.

I hope I am wrong...

yup, and Ronnie Lott needs to kick Thorpes ass.

I'm really starting to doubt players desire to practice.

Based on a couple minor arrests that a few bucks will make disappear?

I think this weekend's events are irrelevent.

Rain Man 08-17-2005 10:16 PM

We must be leading the league in back injuries.

nychief 08-17-2005 10:18 PM

I get the feeling that DV thinks Crap is a pussy for not practicing.

Dick Vermeil is not impressed...

Dick saying crap like that really rings hollow to me considering he will cry at the drop of a hat. At least Cro has something wrong with him and it is just not his vagina acting up like Vermeil usually has making him all teary eyed.

kcjayhawks5 08-17-2005 11:51 PM

whats wrong with thorpe? did he break his finger or jam it? what happened?

CoMoChief 08-17-2005 11:54 PM

Everything that happened this weekend will be alright eventually. The best cure for all of this stuff is to be on the field with the guys.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it sounds like we need a new training staff.

Vermiel has mentioned (several times over the past 2 weeks) that he's deferred to the trainers regarding the players being held out of practice. It sounds to me like our training staff needs to figure out the difference between "hurt" and "injured".

ROFL

My dad used to tell me all the time that I needed to learn the difference between "pain" and "injury".

Vermeil is VERY unhappy about all of the time missed. Not just Crap but several others. He apparently wasn't happy about DJ missing time because of getting his foot stepped on.

That's BS -- he cries because he's emotional, not because he's a puss. It's not at all like the situation with Crap, if it's truly a minor injury.

Sounds like Crap has a strained labia majora to me.

Sounds like a wise man, I heard the same stuff, I preach the same stuff.

I would be willing to bet the players are milking the injury bug as much as possible...... the one's who think( not the ones who are ) they are a lock to make the team.

I put that on the shoulders of DV. I understand resting some of the star players, but you are sending a message to all the rookies that training camp really isn't important.

If you are emotional to the point that you can't say the name Trent Green without crying you have a major issue. That guy cries more then borads on soap operas and an I tired of it. You can say emotion I say its his vagina flaring up.

I completely disagree. First of all, you're grossly exaggerating Vermiel's crying. And his crying doesn't get in the way of his coaching. He doesn't get emotional to the point where he says, "Oh, my... I can't coach today." Whereas we're ostensibly talking about a play (Thorpe) who banged his finger a little and won't practice. That's a big ****ing difference.

We just won't agree on this issue and that is fine. I think it does get in the way of his coaching. Not so much the crying but his emotion and caring for his players. Since he has gotten to KC we h ave been nothing more then soft. Whitlock was spot on about the treatment of the star players and how they are not made to practice as much. They need to be practicing and leading by example instead of sitting on the sideline becuase we want to save them for the regular season.

I know a lot of folks are in love with Vermeil and his style, I for one will not be sad when he goes. I am looking forward to the day he is no longer coach. His act is old and his results have been non existant.

As for Thorpe and not practicing. I remember him saying "Priest has a knee" last year and the next thing you know he is done for the season. I do not turst Vermeils ability to judge injuries any more.

Coach 08-18-2005 08:27 AM

Wonderful. Alot of guys are missing out practice time becuase of a little f**king boo-boo.

7-9, here we come, again.

Wasn't it James Caan in The Program where he had to explain it to the freshman.

Coach: "Are you hurt, or are you injured?"

Freshman: "Huh?"

Coach: "Well if you are hurt, you can still play... If you are injured, well..."

It was something like that. It seems like alot of players don't want to play like it.
