A word of caution !!!!

It would be easy to get to enthused from this game, remember we crushed Atlanta last year and we were still a bad team defensively.

We appear to be improved but history with this team tells me not to get overconfident.

2nd our offense only looked good in the first quarter and we looked pretty weak thereafter.

We have to get healthy or we could lose to Oakland next Sunday night.

Brock 09-11-2005 08:52 PM

Sorry, not even you can throw a wet blanket over this one.

keg in kc 09-11-2005 08:53 PM

I mentioned this earlier: we started the 2003 season with a 27-14 shellacking of the Chargers at home. Dominated them on both sides of the ball. We all remember how that year ended, and what kind of D we fielded.

I'm making myself keep that in mind....

Sunday will be a test. I want to see the same attitude and intensity. I want to see the same hard hits. I think the Raiders may be a team you can make quit if you get to them early, and Collins is the perfect kind of statuesque, fumble-prone QB to attack with the pressure with which we hit Pennington.

Moss will get his yards. He'll probably score. We can win despite that. And handily.

Worry about it tomorrow, though. Tonight is party time.

That is true. You can not get too high over one win or too low over a loss. But it was a beautiful way to start!

RedDread 09-11-2005 08:55 PM

If we could pull out 1 win in the next 3 weeks we're in good shape. If we get 2 I'd be exstatic.

Very true, Vlad. As a matter of fact, just to keep my enthuisiasm in check, I plan to write this first game down as a loss. I know our defense will eventually **** up. I mean, what we saw today couldn't possibly be seen as improvement. It's just a mere mirage.

I agree, but we also finished 13-3 in 2003. I'd take 12-4 or 14-2 (for the sake of jinxes, not 13-3) into a home game at Arrowhead against Indianapolis, or anybody for that matter, with this defense. SD was 4-12 in '03, and I'm willing to put money that NYJ won't be a 4-12 team at the end of this season. Yes, we dominated the season opener in '03, but I don't see the two games as comparable.

That is not what I mean at all, today's game was wonderful, but so was the Atlanta game. In fact I don't think other than the Super Bowl win I have ever experiened a better win than last year's Atlanta game. Pure joy for 4 quarters. Just want people to realize that it could all go poof if we don't get healthy and admit I am still worried about this offense as it only looked good for one quarter. Actually at least the D looked good until we lost Surtain then we looked lucky as hell.

the Talking Can 09-11-2005 09:10 PM

I don't see anyone saying we're the Steel Curtain defense..we're just exicted over an asskicking win

beavis 09-11-2005 09:13 PM

A lot of reasons to be concerned about the D. I think the near shutout was as much a product of the Jets sucking ass as us being better. They dropped a ton of passes, not to mention being unable to snap the ball. That being said, the run D looked greatly improved. I'm not doing cartwheels yet, but they did look a lot better.

Otter 09-11-2005 09:16 PM

I'm as jaded as anyone when it comes to the Chiefs but I'll bet my house that we're right in the middle of the NFL bell curve, if not better, on defense.

Sammy Knight (props to hits on calling this one) looks like a field general out there and that is EXACTLY what this team needed. Anyone who has ever had to supervise should know that attitude runs downhill.

Derrick Johnson and Bell are only going to get better baring injury and Warfield comes back in 3 games.

No Super Bowl prediction by any means but it is nice to see some D on the field again.

Boyceofsummer 09-11-2005 09:16 PM

We were very lucky that the Jets imploded. Dropped passes, snaps, penalties etc.

There are some very big reasons to be concerned and excited.

Concern: Pass D - Other than Surtain our CB's are week.
Happy: With 2 back-up Tackles LJ ran the ball down the Jets throat (I forgot what their rank was but there were some Jets fans last week that tstated they were top 5 or 10.)

The D was much improved. There is talent there unlike 2 years ago when our D had all of the TO's (1st 1/2 of the year) and we knew we would crumble like we ended up doing vs. Indy. This D is much better.

ROYC75 09-11-2005 09:20 PM

If Roaf is out, at least we get Sampson back at RT and move Black to LT.

About the D and the team, happy, but caustiously optimistic.

Think of it this way. Apparently everyone says we need to go at least 2-2 these first four games to have playoff hopes. Well, that's one in the bag, and a handy one that was.

1-2 is all we need. We can beat Chokeland next week and we will. After that any more wins before the bye will only prove moreso that this team is ready for big things

I think these next three will be a challenge, but judging by Week 1, I like our chances at Denver on Mon. Night more than at Oakland.

We just can't take a lot of nagging injuries each week. I kinda think it has a little to do with the lack of PT in preseason for some of these guys that got hurt today. A guy like Roaf should never pull a hammy. :shake:

Missed most of the game with the exception of the final quarter. You are correct, I didn't see much from Bell in that time either but he's got mojo.

Not much to back that up besides what I saw in Pittsburg unfortunatly but he'll get his ass in gear. Give him a week or two, he hasn't been on the field for almost two years.

Did he have the games of Mitchell or Johnson, No. But he didn't need too because they were running plays away from him. They were testing DJ and Mitchell. I saw Bell making and disrupting a lot of plays.

He made an outstanding play, busting up a screen pass that was nulified due to a Jets holding penalty. He dove over a lineman at the legs of Martin and stuffed him for no gain/short loss.

whoman69 09-11-2005 10:10 PM

If the Raiders can't show any better than they did against the Pats, we should have no trouble. Granted, their D is better than our, but I give our offense a big edge over the Pats.

Wallcrawler 09-11-2005 10:16 PM

I dont know how you can compare this game to the atlanta game last year at all.

Atlanta is a one dimensional team. Vick is a running QB by nature and not that great at passing the ball. Stop the run, Vick has a hard time winning the game as a pure passer.

The Jets are a football team that have given the Chiefs a hard time in years past. Rushing champion Curtis Martin has NEVER been held in check this well. You can say whatever you like about the bad snaps and dropped passes, but the Chiefs have never handled Curtis Martin in the manner in which they handled him today. 20 carries, 57 yards. Didnt see that one coming.

The ragging on the secondary is funny, because you people know that area of the team still is not at full strength. Mcleon and Washington are not starting caliber corners, so yeah, some burns are to be expected. Come on. It isnt as if this is a permanent thing with the secondary here. The Chiefs have to make do with this secondary through September. Surtain will be back next week, and we have 3 more games until Warfield gets back, and then I see the secondary improving drasticly. Mcleon will move back inside where he belongs, along with Benny Sapp.

Right now the main concern on defense I would have is the injury to Ryan Sims, and would think that depending on the results of his MRI, the Chiefs should be looking at signing some help at the DT position.

For some reason, I dont exactly feel comfortable with Junior Siavii or Khari Long taking the place of Sims.

These next two weeks could play out very nicely, with the Bolts playing the Donks next week someone is going to be 0-2,couple that with a Chiefs win putting the Raiders at 0-2 and week 3 with the Raiders at Philly and Chiefs at Donks is going to be make things very interesting early on.

whoman69 09-11-2005 11:08 PM

Those Raiders that all the national media has jumped on for improving their team so much is going to be in a big hole. Improve the offense all you want by bringing in a receiver the quarterback can't hit and a backup running back that can't get holes. Give them a pass for a miserable defense that lost talent while passing over KC which moved to improve its defense and has a proven offense.

Then beat Indy handily (in my estimation) the next year. If our offense can produce the way it has for the last 3 years, and our defense stays healthy and plays with the same intensity with which they did today. Who is going to beat us? If we're healthy I think we win our first 4 and the celebration begins! I'm sold on what I saw to start todays game. If I'm being a homer, then being a homer feels pretty damn good. :)

Yup, we won the first game but it proves that our team really sucks.

What is this crap?

The Jets didn't play well, but the Chiefs did take advantage of the situation whenever possible.

The offense needs some fine tuning, but the defense is measurably better than they were last year.

If you want to give up on the Chiefs, by all means do so.

3-4. Takes care of a multitude of problems if Sims is really hurt. IMO, Siavii will soon be playing alongside Eddie Freeman. Browning et al are enough if we don't have to play four down lineman all the time.

As long as Surtain returns quickly we've got a top 10 defense.

Without him we're back to averaging 300 yards a game in the air...

Unless you play a team that doesn't attack the replacement corner deep and still insists on using the shotgun even though the center and QB are clearly on different pages.

Curtis Martin was not stuffed time and again by the Chiefs D. No, he just needed a nap and the line of scrimmage looked like a very comfy spot.

Chad Pennington was not rattled by the hits he took and the red uniforms in his face. He just had Crisco hands.

We've all learned throughout the years that Chiefs' successes early don't necessarily translate to success late. Especially when it comes to the defense in the last three years.

The most encouraging sign was the number of players making big plays on defense. If that keeps up, I think we'll be all right.

The most glaring example of improvement was the tackling. The Jets did not break many tackles. The team pursuit to the ball was improved as well.

Good things happen when you work hard and play better fundamentals. Look for the holdovers from last year to step up their games as well.

I totally agree. If we can go 2-2 in these first four then we are in good shape. 3-1 would be great shape.

I still have hopes that we will win though and in fact now feel we have an 80 percent chance given Surtain does play.
