Surtain and Roaf

Per 610 And Merril KC Star

Roaf prob won't play. We will have a week to prepare if that is the case so it wount be as bad as being in the game and he has to come out

Surtain- Went from 90 percent to 50-50 that he can play on Sunday

This is basically word for word.

ROYC75 09-12-2005 02:52 PM

90% to 50 - 50 ? Having some lingering effects ?

They did not say

Dr. Johnny Fever 09-12-2005 02:54 PM

So with no Surtain who exactly covers Moss agian....?

cripe.... I knew it was too good to be true.

jspchief 09-12-2005 02:55 PM

Anything abour Bennie Sapp? He hurt his shoulder going after one of Fumblington's 500 fumbles, and I never saw him in the game again. I haven't heard anything about him though.

Thig Lyfe 09-12-2005 02:55 PM

I think Surtain will end up playing.

Also, it's probably a good idea to hold Roaf out. The Raiders D is awful. We could have five old ladies blocking and Priest and LJ would still find holes.

tomahawk kid 09-12-2005 02:56 PM

Surtain will play. No way he sits out this game.

Iowanian 09-12-2005 02:59 PM

He was back in later JSp.....He clobbered the Jet #2 QB on almost an identical play at towards the end...I was worried about him too.

Benny played after that, he appeared to be OK.

He was back in the game quite a bit after that.

Sapp came back. In fact, IIRC he almost got a fumble recovery/INT late in the game when Fiedler was stripped.

Fairplay 09-12-2005 03:02 PM

Maybe this question was answered in another post. But did Bell play much? I don't remember seeing him out there.

I say call the fab five, they would do.

jspchief 09-12-2005 03:09 PM

Well apparently I'm the only person that didn't notice Sapp's return.

The combination of Beer, Jaeger, and Mezcal, brought to a rapid boil by the sun must have numbed my cat-like reflexes by that point.

Glad to hear he's okay.

htismaqe 09-12-2005 03:10 PM

Honestly, I'm not sure how much not having Surtain is going to hurt.

They've got Moss AND Porter AND...

This game is going to be about pressure, pressure, and more pressure. If we take away the run and force the Raiders to go into the "throw it up for grabs" offense they displayed the other night, we can win without him...

beavis 09-12-2005 03:11 PM

So did Sapp come back in or not? :p

I wouldn't go that far. They're not going to risk his status for the rest of the season for one game, especially when that game's only #2 on the season. I would guess that if he has any lingering effects from the concussion at all, that he'll sit for this one.

I hope that's not the case (we're screwed if it is), but that's my guess on how the Chiefs will approach this...

But it would sure be good to have him back there...

jynni 09-12-2005 03:13 PM

I'm thinking the defensive game plan should remain the same - just flatten Collins before he can throw the ball.

Offensively we ride LJ and Priest all day - long drives keep the Raiders O off the field.

Pressure (give me another drink) Collins

It'll be pick city, knock 'em down.

No word on T-Rich or Simms?

If forced to choose between Sims or Surtain, I take Sims for this game as crazy as it sounds.

I don't think there's anyway we contain their WR's. Our best shot is to put Collins on his back early and often, and Sims gives us the best shot to do that.

Bowser 09-12-2005 03:22 PM

I bet Roaf plays. Just a gut feeling.

If we can run the ball, we can pass it as well. It will be distributed all over the field.

If we can't run it effectively, then we are hosed on the passing as well. The running IS the key to our offense period. Roaf is a big part of that.

He will play the first half, by then, we will be able to sit him for the second half. Just like in a preseason game.

I hope. heheh.

Priest needs Roaf more than Larry does. If Roaf can't go, we should pound it between the tackles instead of running those stretch plays...

I don't agree about not being to pass if we can't run. There are quite a few games in recent history where our running game has got basically shut down, and we have gone out and passed for 300+ yards and 30+ points.

Against a team like the Jets or Philadelphia having no Roaf would really hurt because they both have very good pass rushes. Against a team like the Raiders, who has practically no pass rush, we should be fine with Sampson and Black. We might end up playing mostly two TE formations with Dunn helping out our tackles, but Gonzo, Kennison, Parker, and company could still carve up their secondary.

The raiderfans over at raiderfan BB seem to think that it will not matter if Surtain plays,They think even if he does Moss is going to walk all over him anyway!

I predict there will be a lot of games this season where Moss has over a 100 yards receiving, but the Raiders still lose by two or more scores.

We may see some Priest and LJ sets, where Priest can be a safety valve on a play action pass with LJ going up the gut(fake), then swing it to Priest out in the flat.

The Raiders will have to respect LJ, and will be tight up against that threat, then also have Gonzo beyond the backers and Priest in the flat.

The possibilities are endless. Al Saunders has a fun job right now. lol.

I agree, Im not in any way implying that Moss is a bad player, because it would be a lie! Lets just hope that the d is in ass kick mode Sunday and we don't let him have one of those 100 yard games!

Moss, real tall. Sapp, real short. I like Sapp, but in this case don't count on him.

KC Jones 09-12-2005 05:57 PM

Surtain should take as much time off as HIS doctors tell him to. He was knocked out cold - you could tell by the way the guy getting off of him nudged him and his body moved as if it were totally limp. I've had a couple of concussions in my life (yeah it does explain a lot), and the after effects can linger for weeks. No need to go out on the field too soon and then end his career or have a serious head injury.

NOBODY, not even Patrick Surtain, is going to completely shut down Randy Moss, especially when the Raiders offensive game plan is reminiscent of a game of 500 -- throw it high and see who comes down with it.

Sapp will see plenty of time -- running corner blitzes and nailing Kerry Collins...

DV said tonight that while he hasn't talked to Gun about how he wants to play the Raiders, he did say that it might be smart to keep him and the rest of the WRs in front of you, don't be risky in the coverage. Don't be risky ESPECIALLY with Moss, because of his big play ability.

He also said the Raiders will test them deep, and that having Davis as an owner, you KNOW they will. That's what he wants them to do, go deep.

petegz28 09-12-2005 06:17 PM

Surtain went from 90% to 50-50 because they Cheifs are going to screw with the Raiders heads a bit on this. I would.
