5 minutes after that photo was taken, the Big Bopper asked Waylon for his seat on a plane...

Halfcan 01-23-2006 03:22 PM

Waylon played bass for Buddy. They had a great sound back then, especially for recording in a garage with crickets chirping.

No but I grew up listening to old rock of the 60's and 50's. I don't like country music, but Waylon had a lot of talent as a guitar, bass, songwriter and singer.

Buddy was his best friend, and before he got on the plane he quiped "I hope your old plane goes down-in response to Buddy kidding him about the frozen bus. Buddy had said-"I hope your old bus freezes up again."

They were both just joking around-but that would be tough to live down. Buddy was a great songwriter-not to mention Richie Vallens-what a talent that kid was. What a shame.

Its Waylon Jennings-his bass player at the time.

Hence red's use of the word "was."

Flipping channels last night and the Biography Channel was just starting on Buddy Holly.Being a big fan of Holly myself it was a great episode, even showed the pic Hillbilly posted above.

I didn't realize Maria(Buddy's wife)had lost a relative in a small plane crash and he had called her that night before they took off but had not mentioned they were flying because as Maria put it,she would have never agreed to him doing it.

The episode also included numerous sound bites from Keith Richards about how Buddy was such an influence on he and Mick,he said to this day there isn't a week goes by he doesn't listen to Buddy's music.

Lastly, also learned that The Hollies took their name in tribute to Buddy.

RAVE ON!!
