Brian Waters signed a 6 year contract extention in 2006

Waters signs six-year extension Chiefs guard makes deal without agent By ELIZABETH MERRILL The Kansas City Star In this time of uncertainty for the Chiefs’ offensive line, one thing is certain — Brian Waters will be in Kansas City for a while. Waters, a two-time Pro Bowl guard, has agreed to a six-year contract extension. Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson said Tuesday that the deal was quietly struck in November, with no agents and apparently little haggling. Waters fired his agent roughly a year ago, and when he missed offseason workouts last summer, it was speculated that he was staying away because of contract issues. It turns out he saved a big hunk of money by negotiating on his own, though the Chiefs, per team policy, declined to give terms of the deal. “I think it’s only smart to retain your own best players first, and then if you have the money and the cap dollars (remaining) to go after free agents,” Peterson said. “You don’t want those guys to ever get to the last year of their contract for fear that you might lose them to free agency. “It gives us continuity for the future of the offensive line.” Waters, who was cut by Dallas as a rookie in 1999, was picked up roughly six months later by Kansas City and blossomed into one of the NFL’s elite at left guard. He made his first Pro Bowl in 2004, and the Chiefs have had the league’s No. 1 offense the last two seasons. Waters is the link between the line’s decorated past and its future. With 11-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields pondering retirement, and Pro Bowl tackle Willie Roaf approaching his final years, Waters will be called upon to help bring along the younger linemen. Shields is expected to make a decision sometime after the Pro Bowl. |

props to CP for getting that done under the radar...
One of my favorite Chiefs.
Now if only CP could find a way to make Shields and Roaf younger.
Outstanding!
Next: Roaf, T-Rich, and Shields.
Hear that, Rosenwhore?

This is a decent start to the offseason. Now get TRich back in here.
That is excellent news. Thats a great start for this offseason.
Now Carl...see what you can do about the Roaf-Shields situation, and some legit Depth behind Roaf. |
Great start to the offseason...
fuck yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This deal was inked back in November. Carl still hasn't done jack this offseason [/hater].
This happened in November?! Damn, if only I had paid 100 bucks to get the scoop from Athan...
SMART MOVE!
So if it was done in November could we have used some of our unused 2005 Cap space to absord some of the bonus?
YES!!!!!!
Sweet news...

Carl will soon be announcing his new policy of handing out extensions to any Chiefs player who fires their agent.
Waters' new contract is out on NLFPA.com. Looks like he did pretty good for himself... 2006 - $500,000 2007 - $500,100 2008 - $500,200 2009 - $500,300 2010 - $500,400 2011 - $500,500 Len Pasquarelli is reporting a signing bonus of $600. I would say that this is a pretty cap-friendly deal the first two years, but we may need to re-structure after that. |

Awesome news.
Glad to hear he re-signed with the Chiefs. I was concerned by this, but the FO did a good job of addressing this so he wouldn't become a FA. Props.
Clearly, CP and Hunt don't care about winning. Dammit, Carl! :cuss:
:) |
Now CP needs to lock up LJ's contract, resign T-Rich and restructure Tony G's contract.
“I think it’s only smart to retain your own best players first, and then if you have the money and the cap dollars (remaining) to go after free agents,” Peterson said. “You don’t want those guys to ever get to the last year of their contract for fear that you might lose them to free agency."
Awesome, I guess that means Siavii is next!!! |
Great job CP!!

Now, if you soak up existing cap room by giving a 2005 roster bonus with the extension, you can take that off the 05 cap. I expect a structure that includes a 05 roster bonus, AND a signing bonus that is relatively small, so that his 06 cap number is actually VERY reasonable. |
well deserved! awesome news!
Gotta love a player that cuts out the agent.
Good deal.
I think Tim Grunhardt never used an agent either.

Kudos to Brian for wanting to be a Chief for practically his whole career. I'm glad and proud of what he's done and am happy to have him locked up (at least til he starts to suck).

At first I was going to neg rep Erick (Nut) for the bump, then I came across this little gem and decided the bump was worth it. |
