I don't know the exact details of it, or what kind of a proposal it is exactly, but I just know that ESPN reported that it was approved.

NFL owners have approved a six-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement by a vote of 30-2 Wednesday night.

Buffalo and Cincinnati were the two teams to vote against the proposal, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Not after the cuts and restructures. We're sitting pretty and Big Willie #1 is staying in KC.

Don't count on it. Carl said the Chiefs won't be very active in FA this year. They just will decline to execute the renegotiated contracts they prepared "just in case". We'll be right near the new higher salary cap.

NFL owners approve six-year CBA extension ESPN.com news services

NFL owners have approved a six-year extension of the collective bargaining agreement by a vote of 30-2 Wednesday night.

Buffalo and Cincinnati were the two teams to vote against the proposal, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

ESPNEWS reports that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones briefly left the owners' meeting shortly before the 8 p.m. deadline the owners set to decide on the extension and told the waiting throng of reporters that owners were "getting close, getting close," but that it would take about "30 minutes" before anything was known. Jones did not offer any other details.

Earlier Wednesday, the NFL moved back the waiver deadline for teams to get below the salary cap from 9 p.m. ET Wednesday to 11 p.m. ET.

Free agency is set to begin at 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday.

This is assuming that the restructures weren't conditional, though. As in, "hey Tony, we need you to restructure, but only if the CBA doesn't get extended". Some of the contract stuff they did won't be needed now, meaning there could be less cap space than we think.

I heard it reported on teh radio that CP said we were under the 94 million cap due to several players restructuring...assuming that report was true we should have about $10 mill to play with under the new CBA...this also assumes that Gonzo's deal was reworked, I haven't heard if he has a new deal yet.

I personally think CP has been down playing our cap situation...we won't spend like last year, but we can - if we want - make a run at TO or Law..or at least a couple of solid starting vets...should be interesting.

Ding!

Carl Peterson: “So probably even if there is an extension, we’re not going to go out and spend a lot of money on our free agents in 2006.”

From KFFL.com

NFL | New salary cap at $104 million
Wed, 8 Mar 2006 17:52:33 -0800

Updating previous reports, ESPNews reports the salary cap for the 2006 season will be set at $104 million. The free agency period will start at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, March 10.

Mile High Mania 03-08-2006 08:15 PM

Sweet ... Denver should be about $10M under if it's $104M now, maybe more based on what Warren and Dayne do.

$15M under now. Warren saves another $7.6M if his deal voids, even re-signing him will save a few million. Plummer, Smith, Bailey, and Wilson haven't had their deals touched yet.

Yeah, I was a bit suprised by that, but then, I think they did that because they probably wanted a bigger piece of the pie.

Obviosly their desires on the revenue sharing was unreasonable I guess.

Garcia Bronco 03-08-2006 08:35 PM

If i remember correctly they were trying to work out a new revenue sharing thing, and they could have possibly wanted to turn down this offer to get more money for themselves from the other teams. i could be wrong, but thats what it sounds like

Coach 03-08-2006 08:48 PM

I think that this also should be mentioned, at least in my opinion.

While I may not be a big fan of NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, but he put the burden on himself and really pushed this deal through.

He rode every side's ass until the deal was done, pushing back FA and forcing the issue.

Tags, you're perserverance may have saved the NFL, thanks a ton.

Wilson said he voted no because he didn't understand it. That it was too complex to understand in 45 min. and that it shouldn't have been rushed.

The agreement concludes weeks of contentious negotiations between the league and the NFL Players' Association. The new extension will add nearly $8 million to the 2006 salary cap, pushing it to $102 million, Mortensen reports. Without a CBA extension, the 2006 cap would have been $94.5 million. The 2007 cap will be $109 million, according to Mortensen.

Well this is good news

PastorMikH 03-08-2006 10:09 PM

102 mil? Wow, everyone was shooting to get below 94.5 now the figure is raised 7.5 mil. What a year to be a FA! With teams getting that extra amount, there should be a fair bit of extra to drive salaries up a bit.

HMc 03-09-2006 12:02 AM

Although as has been mentioned a lot of current deals assumed that the cap would be 104, so there mightnt be the room that people think.

Those of you doing a happy dance because of the extra money thinking it'll mean more free agents in KC need to remember that everybody is getting the extra 8 million, not just us. I doubt a whole lot is going to change for us.

But I've been wrong a time or two before.

Joe Seahawk 03-09-2006 01:30 AM

Not sure if this Clayton article has been posted yet, but I found it to explain the situation nicely..

StcChief 03-09-2006 07:49 AM

Glad they ALL (except two) came to their senses.....CBA in place saves the league at least for few years.

Rate Ralph Wilson of Bills and Brown of Bungels as incompetent owners that don't understand it and obviously their yes men couldn't explain it well enough to make them understand it.

Of course they could have been just the tokens to vote no to show some due diligence against Union.

The restructures we did for several players weren't ever sent to the league office. They were prepared in case we absolutely had to get down to $94M.

I'm guessing we're right at our cap number now, because they tore up those restructures.
