Did Iowa just lose?

I think they flashed the end of the game during the Bucknell game. Wow.

beavis 03-17-2006 01:44 PM

Yep, and I'd like to thank them from being the first team this year to completely screw up my bracket.

SquirrellyBastard 03-17-2006 01:46 PM

Thanks for blowing my bracket Iowa....fuckers!

Me too.

Thank goodness I have no money riding this year.

Ultra Peanut 03-17-2006 01:47 PM

I wonder who the new mod will be, now that Parker has hanged himself.

Infidel Goat 03-17-2006 01:47 PM

eh.

i had iowa losing to w. virginia anyway.

Pitt Gorilla 03-17-2006 01:48 PM

Up by 13 with a minute left? How did they manage to choke that away?

Ultra Peanut 03-17-2006 01:49 PM

True to yesterday's form, I only had Iowa advancing to the second round. I can live with that.

vailpass 03-17-2006 01:49 PM

As a 30+ year veteran of Iowa Hawkeye fandom may I say that if you are surprised by this flame-out it is only because you have not watched enough Iowa basketball.

If you don't believe me ask Ronny Lester, Kevin Boyle, Kenny Arnold, Vince Brookins, B.J. Armstrong, Roy Marble, or any other of a number of guys on a number of Iowa teams that underachieved.

From Jim Bane to George Raveling there has always been a pox on Hawkeye Hoops.

I had them in the Sweet 16. They shouldn't have lost to anyone until they got to Texas. Freakin' Iowegians. :cuss:

Iowa blew a big lead but it wasn't all in the last minute. They were up by 2, Northwestern State had the last possession with 15 seconds to go or so. They came down and shot a three from the right wing... missed it... long rebound to the left corner... Northwestern State player grabbed it, took a couple dribbles and shot a fading three from deep in the corner, swished it. That shot will end up on the cinderella highlight reels for years to come.

Eleazar 03-17-2006 01:54 PM

No one should have put any stock in Iowa to begin with. They were the third or fourth best team in a conference in a down year. Evidence also, the third and fourth best teams from the Big 12, also in a down year, also lost in the first round. Neither conference had anything this year, the records are inflated. Smaller conference schools who got squeezed really have an argument this year about power conference bias.

Not that I need to explain that a team that chokes to a 14 seed is probably not that good, but...

Heck Iowa might not even be the best Iowa team in the tourney.

I had Iowa losing to West Virginia in all my brackets in the 2nd round anyway. That's when I actually had them beating NW St. in the first round.

WTF? The Big Ten is the #1 RPI conference in the country this year and are spoken of almost unanimously by college BB commentators as the toughest top-to-bottom conference this year.

It takes a little more time to gather facts before making a statement but in this case you might have considered doing so.

In no way does this detract from the fact that the Hawks choked, once again. Sigh.

The teams aren't that good no matter how much media pimping they get. Their best team could have lost today to a 15 seed. Check after the next round and see how many teams the Big 11 has left.

I don't know. The only conference better than the Big Ten is the Big East. Some conferences might have a better team or two at the top, but as a whole the conference is pretty good.

It's not bad, just... blah. Like a lot of conferences this year, actually.

At least C-USA tried something new and went the "crash and burn" route beyond the top four teams.

tk13 03-17-2006 02:18 PM

What conferences are better than the Big 10? I want to hear some names. Some conferences have a good couple teams at the top like Duke or UNC or Texas.. but as a whole conference I don't think they're stronger than the Big 10.

Iowanian 03-17-2006 02:21 PM

The Hawkeyes failed under pressure like Skip's discount adult diaper.

SBK 03-17-2006 02:22 PM

The Big Ten must be the best conference with powerhouses like Indiana and Iowa.

If you look at it 'top to bottom' as you say, you could make the case that the bottom and middle of the conference is better than some others.

But as far as teams that will go deep in the tournament? I'm thinking one, maybe.

SBK 03-17-2006 02:24 PM

Well, that speeds up the McDermott derby, now with ISU needing a coach and Alford getting an early ticket to Indiana.

Passable, I think, but there isn't a strong team that will do much in the tourney, IMO. I could be wrong. I see your point about the conference as a whole, but I don't think that Purdue being better than Baylor means a whole lot come tournament time to the teams that are still playing.

Yeah but I think it goes beyond that. After Texas and KU, the Big XII is just... eh. Oklahoma was your three seed and they looked real impressive yesterday.

Yeah, but the Big 10 doesn't seem too far ahead to me. They have more decent teams, but no really great team. In the Big 12, we have two pretty good teams, and nothing else.

I guess it depends on what you think a "better" conference is, conference RPI and number of teams in the tournament, or teams that are final four threats. I guess I would weight tournament potential & performance a lot more than the regular season.

I don't. A conference is a collection of teams. If Memphis wins the title, that doesn't mean the C-USA is the best conference in the country. That's an individual accomplishment.

Pitt Gorilla 03-17-2006 03:33 PM

RPI is a mathmatical factor used to determine individual team rankings and overall conference rankings for the regular season.
For the 2006 season the Big Ten was ranked #1 in RPI. If you do not accept RPI as a valid ranking tool I'm interested to hear the objective measuring standard you use in it's stead.

Regular season is separate from NCAA tourney performance in which the Big Ten this year has so far endeavored to shit the bed.

On the other hand can you name the conference that has had the most appearances by two or more teams in the Final Four in the same year?

Phobia 03-17-2006 05:33 PM

I was 2 seconds from heading over to the tivo to fire up the game and I saw this thread. I couldn't resist. Now I can spare myself the frustration and delete the damn thing. Completely pathetic. The Hawkeyes shouldn't even get invites to the tourney, they never show up anyway.
