What would Kiper be?
If Mel Kiper wasn't the self appointed genious of draft day what career would he have? :hmmm:
I can see him in a light green polyester suit trying to sell me a junk car at a third rate car lot. |
An English dog on a cartoon.

Kiper isn't exactly "self appointed". The dude knows his shit though, and not just in the draft. Ever listen to ESPN The Radio? He's all over everything; MLB, NFL, NBA, etc. He's very underrated, except for this time of year.

Son,
You gotta panty on your head. |
The creator of some kinda hair product?

He's a big fake when it comes to the draft. No one knows whos gonna pick who usually after the first few picks and he thinks he knows all. Last season's draft I think he picked 4 out of 32 picks or something like that?

Kiper has worked in an NFL front office. He's got great contacts. He knows what's going on with the draft more so than anyone else not directly involved. I think that's a safe bet. |

I just don't get "hairdue" Kiper, because the man has never played, coached, or even scouted in the NFL

Kiper is okay by me. He scores a solid 70 on the unintentionaly comedy scale. I'd rather watch someone that is passionate about what they do and has some personality quirks than another ex-jock who's opinion isn't any better informed than the average fans.

Kiper has been doing this for ESPN for over 20 years. Even if he didn't know what he was doing when he started, you can't convince me that 20 years on the job has taught him nothing.
Some people just have screwed up expectation of what these guys can do. Think about it. NFL teams get it wrong a lot. How much better do you expect Kiper to be? |

Kiper is armchair wannabe infact any one of us could do his job if we got paid to watch college football games 24/7 to evaluate talent for ESPN |
Quote:
My guess is, Kiper knows a hell of a lot more about it than you or I or anyone else on this BB ever will. He's probably established quite a rolodex over the years too. Is he the best? Maybe not. But he's good enough to make a career out of it. |
Quote:
Mayock? Well...he was a former player. Sat in a broadcast booth for a few years. Good for him. I'm sure he'll be a stud as a "College guru". |

I Sorry can't believe that dipshit has more "football knowledge" than me or others on this very BB. |

This is how Kiper did it he got lucky in broadcast journalism by landing a job in the gestation of ESPN as a network in a whole. Currently he wouldn't be able to break the market as a the "ultimate evaluator of talent". He'd be just another internet draftnik

As for not being able to break into the market, maybe you missed the rankings I posted earlier. He's been getting paid to espouse his football knowledge for probably as long as you've been alive. He probably knows more about college players in one year than you'll know in your lifetime. I'm not sure what your beef is, but you're an ass to sit here and try and discredit him in the face of what he's accomplished. |

Mel Kiper Jr. has served as an expert analyst for ESPN's annual NFL draft coverage since 1984, providing in-depth information on the nation's most talented college football players. His pre-draft predictions are frequently the most accurate in the business, often as much as 80 percent correct on first-round selections. He also has a Web page (www.espn.go.com/melkiper), linked off of ESPN.com, that launched in 2000. Kiper is also analyst for "College GameDay" on ESPN Radio, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays throughout the season. Additionally, he is a frequent contributor to ESPN's award-winning "SportsCenter" during the NFL and college football seasons and provides occasional updates throughout the year. Kiper is president of Kiper Enterprises, which he founded in 1981 while in college. It is responsible for all aspects of a series of annual publications including the "NFL Draft Report" and "Draft Preview." His continuous, yearlong research is aided by an office equipped with satellite dishes allowing him to pick up 20 to 25 college games each week. This adds to his in-depth knowledge gathered from lengthy discussions with coaches, players and team executives. Kiper, born July 25, 1960, attended Essex Community College in Baltimore It sounds like anyone of us given the oppurtunity and connections |
Quote:
Why do you think he got the opportunity, and where did he get the connections? Stop and think about it. He's practically the only person in the world with that job. If it's so damn easy, don't you think others would be doing it? If he's so damn bad at it, why hasn't he been replaced? |
Quote:
It sounds like he was way ahead of his time and made the most of his knowledge, showcasing it and making it sought after. We should all be so fortunate. |

Easy the same reason why other "broadcasters" aren't replaced, because of continuity with producers, and again luck. Their's other magazines that are doing the same thing Kiper was the 1st to hit the market if he wasn't hired on ESPN then that guy would've done the samething. It's all about luck |
