What about Julian Battle at FS?

He was a safety in college. I've got significant discomfort with Greg Wesley and would love to see someone else get a shot although I'm unsure if Battle has fully recovered from his injury.

StcChief 07-24-2006 10:24 AM

This Training camp will be more interesting with all the new faces...

I would love Battle to push Wesley.

Competition is always a good thing.

DaKCMan AP 07-24-2006 10:30 AM

We're fine at CB with Surtain, Law, Walls, Sapp, Maxey (still think he's PS material), Hodge and camp fodder of Kevin Garrett & Chris Johnson. If Battle can make the roster and push for time at FS, go for it.

Archie Bunker 07-24-2006 10:30 AM

It would be nice to see Battle or Bartee step and challenge Wesley for the FS. I think Bartee would make a great FS in this defense but it clear his brain will never match his talent.

It wouldn't shock me to see Pollard and Knight starting at S despite the fact that Pollard is more of a SS.

htismaqe 07-24-2006 10:32 AM

I believe Battle played SS in college, but his time at CB would help him if he moved to FS.

I'm hoping the presence of Law and Surtain on the outside will allow us to push Pollard into the lineup sooner.

NJ Chief Fan 07-24-2006 10:36 AM

is that kid we drafted from the U going to be playing CB or FS, i think he and pollard would make a great safety tandem in the future

ChiefsfaninPA 07-24-2006 10:36 AM

All I know is that this training camp is going to be interesting for our secondary. I am loving this.

I'm not sure what "talent" some of you speak of with this Bartee character. I watched him all through college, and what you see is what you get. I nearly fell off my couch when the Chiefs drafted him, and I throw up every year when he somehow makes the roster. I hope my vomit stays inside me this year.

I never saw him play in college so I will take your word for it. Occasionally on special teams I see little signs of potential but it is probably fools gold.

I don't know how suited Battle is for safety. His strength appears to be man coverage from what I've seen. That doesn't mean he can't play in more of a zone oriented position, I just haven't seen him play that style much.

Chief Faithful 07-24-2006 11:01 AM

I have not heard any news about Battle being tried at FS eventhough he was a safety at Tennesse his first 3 years. I have big doubts he will be on the roster come September.

I don't know if that is his specialty. He seemed to have problems with pass interference penalties while covering his man.

No question he struggled with PI, but from what I remember, he was always tight on his man and the contact wasn't really necessary. I always felt like it was a confidence thing, like he didn't trust that he had the guy covered even when he did.

ck_IN 07-24-2006 11:09 AM

Unless we just need the extra body, Battle is likely a goner. He can't cover so CB is out. He might make an adequate FS but I think Maxey is the heir apparent there.

If nothing else the absence of DV meant that our draft at least made sense. Now if these guys pan out is another question.

htismaqe 07-24-2006 11:17 AM

As much as I think it would be a good move, the Chiefs front office has been adamant since the day he was drafted - Maxey is a CB, not a FS.

RealSNR 07-24-2006 11:31 AM

You know how Vermeil is, but remember last offseason when "The stars of mini camp were Kawika and Battle." and he prattled on and on about how his guys have improved so much. If he recovers from his injury, I could see a spot for Battle on the roster very easily.

ck_IN 07-24-2006 12:17 PM

You may be right htismaqe and that may be their intention but I think it would be a mistake. I remember looking at his numbers when Maxey was drafted and thinking 'Wow that's slow for a CB but it'd be about right for a safety'.

He apears to have coverage skills so using those and hiding his speed at FS would make the most sense.

ck_IN 07-24-2006 12:19 PM

SNR, I never put ANY stock in ANYTHING that DV said. If he told me it was raining I'd stick my hand out a window to verify.

I agree with you.

But I do think Herm knows DB's, so I'll defer to his judgement...

shaneo69 07-24-2006 02:00 PM

Battle has been a 3 year bust. We need to stop waiting for potential to become production and just cut our losses with these guys.

I go back to Whitlock's article about him last offseason when he talked to Battle about challenging for a starting spot and Battle was more interested in taking "baby steps".

The defensive attitude around here is changing. The nice guys who were able to keep their roster spot under Vermiel, and the guys who Gunther stuck with simply because of their potential, should now be told to hit the road. Produce or STFU.

Every time I've seen him this is what I see. He can cover, he would be stride for stride and for no reason just grab the guy and get flagged. He reportedly was looking good last off-season, then lost the whole year with a mis-step achilles injury. Stuff happens. I'm lookin forward to the competition in the secondary for sure!!
