Lowered expectations!

Sadly I had already accepted our offense was going to be significantly diminished this season because of Herm. However, even my lowered expectations were not set to handle the loss of Roaf to retirement. I now feel we will be fortunate to finish .500 but that this gives us the chance to start rebuilding our offense. I think we should consider asking Will Shields and Priest to go ahead and retire opening up roster space for some projects. We should also have some scouts out (if possible) looking for prospect that might be cut worth pursuing.

So what are your thoughts on the best way to start rebuilding?

unlurking 07-28-2006 10:01 PM

And how would we benefit by losing Shields? Is there someone who could replace him? Even looking at the long term, he will retire after this season, what benefit would there be to him retiring this season?

Moooo 07-28-2006 10:02 PM

Damn Jim. You're a good guy and all, but this is just f***ing stupid.

Mecca 07-28-2006 10:04 PM

It's alot easier to replace a guard than a tackle, so Shields doesn't concern me all that much.

007 07-28-2006 10:10 PM

My God man. We were flying high a couple days ago. Now you are selling out over one retired player. Yeah, Roaf is a huge loss, literally, but it will be worked out.

I refuse to accept defeat before we have played a game. More like at least 10 games.

This is a joke, right? There's no way that you're really thinking like this, is there? Roaf was a once great tackle, but the guy missed 6 games last year and the Chiefs still won 10 games! We have the easiest schedule in years , facing the NFC West & AFC North. I seriously doubt the Chiefs will even miss a beat. Seriously.

In addition, our defense will make enough strides to where it will offset any shortcomings the offense might have this season. And I stress might have this season. It's not like we're going up against the top defenses in the league this season! Cinci, who we whooped last year? Arizona? Cleveland? The Raiders twice! Come on, this team is 11-5, barring injury to Trent Green or Larry Johnson.

All this moping is almost too much to take!

Hammock Parties 07-28-2006 10:16 PM

The defense will compensate for Roaf's loss.

ROFL.........We're a middle of the pack defense, we aren't going to be winning games 17-10.

2bikemike 07-28-2006 10:41 PM

While I don't agree about asking Shields to step a side and cash it all in,I do believe the Chiefs are seriously fugged unless Turley is still a stud at the lighter weight and Jordan Black seriously steps up and is leaps and bounds better than last year.

The offense seriously sucked without Roaf last year. I am thinking we will be lucky to be 9-7.

I'm telling you right now, we'll win 3 or 4 games that way. This defense is going to be better than average. It's going to be real good. We've got the right defensive ends. We've got the right linebackers. We've got so many ballhawks in the secondary Jake Plummer's going to retire after week one.

The only real weakness is defensive tackle. Krumrie is going to whip that ass into shape, so we'll be good there.

Get ready. This is the year of the defense. And it is going to ROCK.

Sadly, you are right, the season is lost. Trent Green should go ahead and retire with PH, Shields, and Roaf. We will be lost without Roaf, it is time to rebuild. Maybe we can get a pass from the league and just give up and call them all losses to save the embarassment of getting our azzes kicked.

except for the DT part, I agree...our D has real talent in Allen/DJ/Mitchell/Law/Surtain....throw in Hali and a healthy Bell (big IF) and we're really looking good..

go bo 07-28-2006 11:39 PM

i'm thinking we might survive ok without roaf...

larry has really learned to set blocks up and then take advantage of whichever way the defender tries to go around the blocker, larry goes the other way at top speed...

so larry will make it a little easier on anybody who tries to fill that spot...

good heavens, i hope jordan black suddenly improves...

turley looks like a shrimp next to the other olinemen...

go bo 07-28-2006 11:40 PM

and a very skinny shrimp at that...

Logical 07-28-2006 11:42 PM

I still think we could survive at RT by using Dunn there and Turley as the blocking TE. I just see no one to protect Green's backside and with no passing game they will shut down LJ tighter than a virgin's box.

They didn't shut down LJ when Roaf was out last season.

but will a cover 2 mostly zone be a good fit for all that talent?

somehow i have trouble seeing bell drop back in coverage almost all the time...

and if we don't get any push up the middle, enemy qb's will just step up into the pocket to avoid allen and hali...

maybe krumrie can get something out of the host of dt's that we have on the roster right now...

and maybe jr. will get miraculously healed just before he gets cut and suddenly turn into the stud that they thought they drafted in the freaking second round...

we have wasted a lot of draft picks trying to get 2 decent dt's, and it looks like jr. is headed out the door (isn't he on the pup list now?)...

i thought we had some pretty good dl coaches before, but maybe the krum man can work a miracle...

i thought the plan in tc last year was to have sampson start at rt...

he's healthy this year, maybe we're ok there, we haven't really seen enough of him to know if he can handle the starter's job...

black's gonna have to do at lt until svitek gets some more experience/coaching...

ouch...

no, our DTs are terrible for a cover two....cross your fingers and pray for Sims...

I'm drunk and therefore hopeful.....

Fox is a better fit then Bell. But I'm dreaming of the rookie Bell that scared people just by looking at them...

el borracho 07-29-2006 12:13 AM

Well, I'm not ready to throw in the towel right now but if the Chiefs start off horribly (like 1 and 4 or something) then I would want the coaching staff to start playing more of the youngsters and preparing for the future.

Just for clarification, by youngsters I mean the young wide receivers, the young safeties, Hali and the young OTs.

I know; I just hate rebuilding years. We can never seem to get the offense and the defense together at the same time, so the only thing I have left are my hopeful delusions. :D

Looking at the pictures of Turley, and adding his back issues, I tend to agree with jsp in his assessment that Turley very likely will not last the season.

I also am not as down on Jordan Black as many (most) are.

He'll never be a great tackle.
He lacks the quick feet that the position really requires.

However, he's a kid that played Guard in college, then was asked to compete for the RT in camp last year, and then was thrust into duty at LT at the start of the season.

That is a lot yo ask of a young guy just learning the NFL ropes.

IMO, if give him six weeks of training camp to work at the position, and learn the nuances, he could play it adequately.

Next season, when Shields retires, he can be moved back to guard, where I think he will flourish, and Svitek, who has a lot of potential, can take over at LT, when he should be ready to excel.

All of you doom and gloom posters should really think about finding a new hobby. I don't think that watching the Chiefs is healthy for any of you anymore. Seriously, Royals fans are optimistic than some of you guys. Think about it. You watch this game and follow this team for fun. If you have become soooooo miserable in following this little drama over the past (fill in the blank) years, that you now have to prepare yourself for horrible, rotten seasons just to be able to cope it's time to hang them up. Take up something else. All it takes in this league is a little luck and it can make all the difference between 6-10 and 12-4. Luck. One way or the other. Just calm the **** down.

Being serious for a moment who are you to tell us we should find another hobby. I have seen the good times (two Super Bowls) and suffered the eighties and the Carl Peterson 17 year plan. This team it seems is cursed to some sort of failure on the order of the Boston Red Sox. Yet people will still follow them just like the people still follow the Cubs and Red Sox in the slight hope that there will one day be that grand and glorious year like the Red Sox fans had a couple of years ago. Won't stop complaining and suffering until it happens and that is part of being a loyal Chiefs fan.

Actually last year I did not make one of these threads until well into the season. I thought the offseason went really well last year and was incredibly optimistic after we traded our 2nd for Surtain and got DJ in the draft. I even predicted an AFC championship with a loss in the Super Bowl.

It is not just Roaf, remember that Welbourne also retired and Kennison is threatening to hold out. That is two fifths of our offensive line and our only legitimate WR that might not play. Add to that going back to the Marty Philosophy on offense and I have definitely got very little in exectations now.

How many times de we have to say this?

Martyball is not maulball.

Maulball is dominating the opponent with the running game.
Maulball is an aggressive approach to demoralizing the opponent by dominating the line of scrimmage and the clock in an effort to win the game.

Martyball is playing in a passive manner in the hopes of not losing.

The linemen we do have have all been here beffore this year so they should be able to play. As good as a Pro Bowler like Roaf? Prolly not but I don't think we'll have a total collapse on the left side. We do still have Waters at LG so I think we'll be O.K.

It's not necessary (though nice) to have a Pro-Bowl left tackle to run an effective offense. Again, the Chiefs are still fielding 11 guys (not 10) and 6 weeks of work before the first game should give them plenty of time to get a suitable left tackle ready to start the season.
