Niners make No. 6 pick Davis highest-paid TE

He's not like EK, right?
An all-night negotiating session between the San Francisco 49ers and the agents for first-round choice Vernon Davis was rewarded with Davis making his first practice and the former Maryland star becoming the highest-paid tight end in the league. Davis signed a five-year deal Friday morning worth in excess of $23 million and possibly close to around $25 million. His deal tops those of Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, the Chiefs' Tony Gonzalez, Raven Todd Heap, the Cowboys' Jason Witten and the Falcons' Alge Crumpler. They make between $4.14 million and $4.5 million a year.
Included in the deal is $15.45 million in guarantees. The contract is roughly 41 percent better than the slot for the No. 6 pick last season. Davis was the sixth pick in the first round and a rare talent. He can run the 40 in the 4.3-second range even though he weighs more than 250 pounds. His presence is expected to help the development of quarterback Alex Smith, who is entering his second year.
Davis' agents, Eric Metz and Ethan Locke, have been negotiating around the clock for more than two days on two coasts. They completed a five-year, $9 million deal late Thursday night for Patriots first-round pick Laurence Maroney. They negotiated until 5 a.m. Friday on Davis' deal.
After a brief break to review the language, both sides worked hard to make sure Davis made the team's morning practice. The 49ers reported to camp Friday morning and began their practice sessions.
All of the 49ers' draft choices are now signed.

the niners are stupid.

jspchief 07-29-2006 12:48 PM

Gives you an idea of what Gonzo's demands will be next year.

Sayonnara, Tony.

LJ won't be 31 when he's asking for a huge contract.

JBucc 07-29-2006 01:15 PM

Why would that piss him off? It should make him happy since now he'll get paid more than that by somebody.

First pissed off while on the Chiefs.

I hope I'm wrong about all this.

I personally don't think Tony will do that to the Chiefs.

el borracho 07-29-2006 01:18 PM

5 years, $25 million for a rookie tight end?! The Niners are insane.

I don't think he'll be pissed. You can't sign a contract to be the highest paid player at your position, and expect that "highest paid" status to remain throughout all the years of your contract. It's just not practical.

What I do think is it will be the benchmark for Tony's asking price next year. And KC won't pay it, I hope.

Demonpenz 07-29-2006 01:26 PM

Oh man the women of kc are going to be pissed!

That's the popularity of the NFL for you. I can't believe Vince Young is getting 26 million guaranteed, I don't think he's a sure thing at all. If you bomb on that it's a massive waste of money.

I can't wait to see what LJ asks for. He could ask for a 30 million dollar signing bonus up front, and he'd deserve it. That's what I've been talking about for years when people talk about Lamar not needing renovations because he makes 20-30 million in profit per year... big deal, pretty soon that's not gonna be enough to pay one guy's signing bonus.

I think his asking price for next year will have to do with his play next season. If he has a year like last year, I think he could resign for a much lower price. If he gets back to the high level he played when he had 100 catches, he could be asking for that sort of contract. Like you said, the Chiefs won't pay it.

The 49ers :shake:

The stupidity of that organization starts right at the top...

Demonpenz 07-29-2006 01:36 PM

the 49ers are set up to suck for years. Alex Smith should not have been drafted that high.

In the last draft, I'm not sure if he would be even in the top 15.

I think Jason Campbell will end up being the best QB from that draft, and I don't think he'll even be all that good.

fugg tony, he is an ahole to fans and a premadonna

get some yards after the catch and Carl might throw you a bone

Chargers8491 07-29-2006 02:05 PM

The NFL really needs to get a handle on these rookie signings.

I mean, we can sit here and argue who this best TE is AG or TG and in the end we will have to agree to disagree.

What I will say, is its not looking good for KC only because TG is up next year and AG signed a 5 yr last year(missed 1 game because of it).

Again it goes back to the fact that the NFL needs to get a handle.

Could not agree any more, these players have done nothing to prove what they can do at a professional level, but end up getting 25 millon in guaranteed money. It is way out of whack. They need a set amount of money for each pick in the draft at greatly reduced rate

Actually, the fact that TG is up next year, while AG has a 5-year deal is really irrelevant. One or two more deals like this and you can bet AG will be holding out for money, 5-year deal or not.

Mecca 07-29-2006 08:30 PM

You knew Davis was going to get alot of money seeing what the other high picks got. If Tony Gonzalez even remotely asks for that he shouldn't be here next year, and for the Kennison holding out comments he can leave too. This is this teams last year as far as I'm concerned it's time to start getting younger and dumping players after this season.

big nasty kcnut 07-29-2006 08:38 PM

I don't care tony g. will stay a chiefs he said it and i believe tony. Plus one more thing i believe king carl will make a deal that will help the chiefs cap room while giving tony g his money.

I'm not overly concerned about the Chiefs cap room after this year, the Chiefs need to start cutting and moving away from ALOT of guys after this season.

chiefs4me 07-29-2006 08:49 PM

I can imagine what some of you are saying about TG..(so I am not reading it)and you are wrong....he's not about the money...HE is about the Chiefs..

ROYC75 07-29-2006 09:35 PM

Isn't Davis that freak TE with RB speed ?

Salaries are getting out of hand...........
