SI: Contract talks with LJ and Gonzo have stalled

This is from SI's rumors and news yesterday morning, I didn't see it posted anywhere. I don't know how accurate it is, SI put it as their top little news blip. They apparently got this from NFL.com but I couldn't find where... but I didn't look very hard. I know Gonzo is going to be a FA, I guess contract extension talks with LJ aren't going well either...

Kansas City talks aimed at new contracts for future free agents Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez have stalled. With so many teams so flush with money, Gonzalez could hit a bonanza on the open market, as would Johnson.

KurtCobain 12-21-2006 04:42 AM

We don't need them. We've got Damon Huard. As long as we resign him, we'll be fine.

BigRock 12-21-2006 04:43 AM

It's just a worthless Adam Schefter story. "Say, the Chiefs haven't re-signed Gonzalez or LJ yet, I'll pretend like that's breaking news and write about it".

CupidStunt 12-21-2006 04:49 AM

LJ isn't going anywhere for at LEAST one year.

Silock 12-21-2006 04:57 AM

LOL

It's not like they were in a meeting today trying to hammer something out and they walked out in anger.

Must be a slow news day. Maybe TO should try to kill himself again.

'Hamas' Jenkins 12-21-2006 04:57 AM

If it comes down to it, franchise Tony this year, trade him for picks, and pay up for Larry.

Mecca 12-21-2006 05:36 AM

The future in KC isn't bright.....especially considering Gonzalez doesn't have that many years left, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted out of here.

Red Dawg 12-21-2006 05:55 AM

As far as I'm concerned we can trade Gonzo. The team that wins the SB this year and the ones have won it over the past 30 did not have TG. Franchise and get a number 1 for him.

You actually get 2 #1's if you designate him that way...but no team would give that up for a TE.

They could tag him and trade him for the best offer......it's better than nothing.

penguinz 12-21-2006 07:29 AM

LJ is not going anywhere. - Signed a seven-year contract with Kansas City (7/17/03)

Doesn't matter. He can hold out. He has the Chiefs over a barrel.

Bob Dole 12-21-2006 07:37 AM

Didn't Tony Romo go Christmas shopping or something? Shouldn't he be covering that breaking news?

It is a two way street, they have hime over a barrel as well. He likes to be in the spotlight too much to set out IMO.

InChiefsHeaven 12-21-2006 07:41 AM

This is ridiculous. They are just piling on because we have basically shot ourselves in the foot this season and secretly they all hate the Chiefs...maybe not so secretly...

...it's a conspiracy I tell ya!!

BigRedChief 12-21-2006 07:44 AM

Here's a new thought............
If the Chiefs franchise Tony G. they can't use the franchise tag on anyone else for the length of the contract correct? So lets say if....they franchise Tony G and then LJ starts holding out, wanting a trade they won't have the franchise stick to smack his agent with during negoiations

the Talking Can 12-21-2006 07:58 AM

I think Tony wants out, can't blame him.

We need to rebuild and resign LJ.

CP needs to put aside his ego and move Gonzo. But that would mean admitting that we are rebuilding, something CP has never done.

Chiefnj 12-21-2006 08:09 AM

A 7 year contract is never a 7 year contract these days. There are always voidable years.

LJ's contract is voidable to 5 years. Next year would be the last year of his contract with KC. With his recent comments about Herm and the coaching staff, I doubt he'd want to redo his contract right now.

I disagree that LJ has anyone over a barrel. If he wants to hold out, he can hold out and pay fines up the wazoo.

CupidStunt 12-21-2006 08:19 AM

No one will pay what LJ wants (in 2008) if he holds out an entire season.

RBs are a dime-a-dozen, he'd be getting up there in age, has character questions... no one would touch him, and he and his agent know this.

Demonpenz 12-21-2006 08:24 AM

it will be hard if gonzo goes to the hall with a different team

In the NFL you don't go to the hall with a team. You go as a player.

That would be f**king awesome. The ultimate smack in the face for Carl.

htismaqe 12-21-2006 09:37 AM

As much as it pains me to say it, LJ is really not someone you can "rebuild" around, because chances are he's not even around in 2-3 years. This many carries is going to take a toll on his body.

mrdad45 12-21-2006 10:55 AM

Honestly, and I might (probably) get blasted for this, but I would definitely make a trade. However, my trade would include LJ, if he wanted out of KC (which I personally think he does). Think about it...we have way too many holes to fix on both sides of the ball to be serious contenders within the next 2 years and the way we are running LJ...I honestly think he will, at best, have this kind of burst for another 3-4 years. Now, don't get me wrong, keeping him would be fine (I mean he is top 3 RUNNING back in league)...however I do not see him as a COMPLETE back yet, and I do not know if he will ever be. Now, if we can get two 1st round picks for him either this year or next year as we franchise him...this will allow us to become younger and obtain better talent within the draft (hopefully Carl!). There will be some pretty good backs coming out within the next couple of drafts, if I'm not mistaken...so use one of the firsts on a RB then start filling holes. Just my thoughts over the past few weeks.

L.A. Chieffan 12-21-2006 11:06 AM

I'm on the Jo Po bandwagon.

2-14 here we come!!!!!

we don't need to franchise LJ as long as he's still under contract

if we franchise tony:

1. he signs 1 year deal and we get franchise tag back next year

2. he signs 1 year deal and then signs long term deal after july 1st ... in which case we get franchise tag back next year.

3. we tag and trade him .... in which case we get franchise tag back next year.

I'm thinking Tony is torn between staying to finish it out and going somewhere to win one. I know CP will take care of him cash wise- but with so much FA $$, who knows what teams will toss his way- like a NO's.

I hope he stays, just as long as he doesn't goto Denver I'll wish him well, though

FloridaMan88 12-21-2006 12:51 PM

Carl sure has the Chiefs' future looking like a giant pile of shit

I could see the Redskins giving up 2 #1's....but then I can't remember if they have any #1 picks left.

Reerun_KC 12-21-2006 12:57 PM

Could you imagine LJ going to Denver? Holy Crap! Wouldnt that be something to see?

DagoTom 12-21-2006 01:16 PM

Considering you guys have some age at some key positions maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to tag-and-trade TG and trade LJ in a blockbuster deal for draft picks. Bet you could end up with between 3 and 5 first-day picks including a couple additional first-rounders for those two guys. TG's in the last couple years of his prime and while LJ's young his value is very high. Besides--physical punishing runners usually don't stay in their physical prime very long.

You might have to go through a couple lean years but considering that the Chargers are young and very good, and Cutler looks like he may be good for awhile, maybe now is the perfect opportunity for the Chiefs to rebuild.

its a necessary evil that truely has to happen in KC, but Carl is more worried about Keeping the seats full and giving the fans many years of false hope.

If that was the case, he would of never hired Herm. Herm is the safe coach. Not one you want to rebuild a franchise with.

Bob Dole 12-21-2006 02:05 PM

Tony Romo was just spotted driving a car on I-30 in Dallas. Schefter is on his way there for live coverage now, so this will be old news quick.

Yeah, that's exactly what Carl's goal is. He's been doing it for 18 years and yet the stadium is full. Lemmings.

Why would he stay around? The window of opportunity has shut. He'd be much more valuable going to team that had a decent pass-blocking line, so he could be a receiver more often.

I agree, I Think we will be worse next year. I just dont see how they can fill so many holes we got. We need a qb, 4 guys on the line, Wide outs. and a Tight end. I dont think Tony will be back next year. Plus we need 2 Defensive tackles. maybe a young cornerback if they cut Law.

Crashride 12-21-2006 03:58 PM

I said this same thing the other day......that if people really want change they should stop buying tickets......but I'm an asshat for that I guess, atleast to some anyway.

It's just like Lucy pulling the football away from Charley Brown time after time. Our dim witted fans keep buying tickets thinking one day she will let him kick it.
