Carl Peterson's Coaching Decisions
The facts:
Picked Marty- Excellent choice. But lets see what he has done since we won a playoff game 12 years ago. Picked Gunter - Could have had - Bill Bellicheck, Andy Reid and Mike Holgreen Picked Vermiel - Could have had Herm or Marty Picked Herm- Could have had- Payton? You decide. Good, fair, poor |
Gunther was the only bad choice in my eyes. Talk about making a desicion that was basically "business as usual"
Jury is still out on Herm. Im willing to give him at least 2 seasons. |
Problem is, since Marty left, 2 of the hires have been Carls little yes men, and I am guessing DV was more like a father figure for Carl.
But Gunther and Herm are totally yes men, they were safe hires, preventing any controversy or questioning of Carls free agents, drafts and signings.... |

However, I didn't like any of the hires at the time they were hired, including Hermie, and nothing any of the first three did made me feel that I was wrong about my initial reaction to those hires. I'm hoping that Hermie does. |
I'm glad to see you gentlemen giving Herm the benefit of the doubt. It once again proves how thoughtful, fair, and honorable ChiefsPlanet members can be when the chips fall out of the bag.
I, however, have seen enough of Herm to realize that he is a liar and a blowhard. He handles himself like an insecure, unassured bonehead clinging to what he thinks will work the last time he checked. Personally, I think he should check a little more often on whatever the hell it is that he checks on because it appears that the last time he checked on anything was about 15 years ago. I hope he changes my mind because I'd love to see the Chiefs make the playoffs in my lifetime, but so far I haven't seen anything on the field that demonstrates he was worth the pick we gave up for him. Did anybody actually expect us to be better than 9-7 with an aging offense, the loss of Willie Roaf, the loss of Al Saunders, and with Gunther of our D-Coordinator?

The rest of the choices I think were fair enough when they were made. Vermeil, he had just built a Super Bowl team with the No 1 offense and No 6 defense so how could you argue with that. Herm, jury is still out but I don't think he was a bad choice. Remember, he was hired to rebuild this team, as all we heard about all offseason is how old we were and how we needed to get younger... |
I'm not going to do the 20/20 thing. I'll rate them as I honestly saw them going in:
a) Marty - good b) Gunter - wait and see ( = bad) c) Vermeil - good d) Herm - wait and see (= bad) What the heck, here's my hindsight... WHERE'S MY LOMARDI???? WHERE'S MY LOMARDI??? |
He should've got payton.

Is a Chiefs playoff berth worth my left nut? I think so. I can still reproduce and screw chicks as a one nutted man. |

According to Soren Petro Marty held his press conference on January 11th of that year. |

yeah, Belichek wasnt coming to KC... he had his mistress close on the East Coast that he was banging. |

Till then I'm with you. After that you will move into the openly negative category. I'll check what I checked to see if its been checked after I check. |
Hermopia= the belief that he will get us to the big-show....
|
50/50 loved the Marty and Dick choices, hated the Gunther pick and I am leaning that way on Herm.
|
Marty was a good choice. We needed an experienced coach that could build a team after our misery of the 80's.
Gun was a bad choice but we were trying to promote from within so I won't critisize it too badly. Vermeil was a terrible choice. He was only interested in building an offense so he could stroke his ego and prove it was he and not Martz in St. Lou. For Carl it was a last desperate gasp to burnish his rep. The team suffered while both men attempted to stroke their egos. We the fans suffered. Herm I'll give some fair time to. He has to de-DV this team which will take time and pain. I'd have rather seen a young assistant NFL coach hired so we could grow our own coach instead of having the ex-HC of whomever. I also doubt Herm was worth a draft pick. However he deserves a fair chance. |
Herm seems like the right idea at the time
In my opinion, Herm looked like a good choice on paper. He was "known" for building up defenses. Not offenses. Our defense was headed in the right direction before Herm came to KC. Our offense was in decline. Defense is still on the rise and will get better, but our offense has lost it's luster.
Anyway, I think the coach we need is Pete Carrol. We may not be able to sign him, but he is the right fit for the Chiefs. He brings out the best in his players and is a true coach who doesn't focus on just one aspect of the football. If we could sign him, he could use his college knowledge and draft well. |
No thanks. Pete Carrol pretty much destroyed the Pats before Bill B. took over. He's a great college coach but a proven loser at the NFL level. Much like Steve Spurier.
|
Can't believe the MU folks have not offered up Pinkel.
Alden could replace Carl... |
Pete Carrol
One would think that he is a proven loser in the NFL. He may have been earlier in his career, but his triumps at USC have made him a better coach. Besides, what makes Herm better than Carrol? Herm completely destroyed the Jets before coming here. Why not pick the best college coach over one of the worst in NFL?

If we're going to hire a college coach, we should do what the Dolphins did. Personally, I'd love to see Kirk Ferentz coaching the Chiefs. |

Are we being a little bit of a :homer: here? |

Is there any Iowa Hawkeye bias there? |
This is sad

Kirk Ferentz is one of the hottest NFL coaching prospects out there. And that's a FACT. |

I had not reached them, my bad. |
Ok, lets do that

Pete Carroll coaches at USC. With the school's prestige alone, he gets the top recruits in the nation year after year after year. What has Ferentz done? Let's see: He's taken a mid-tier Big 10 school with 2 and 3* recruits and competed HEAD TO HEAD with Michigan and Ohio State. He finished in the Top 10 in the nation THREE YEARS IN ROW, one of only 3 coaches to do that - and he did it all with players nobody else wanted. He took an unrecruited, skinny QB from South Dakota and turned him into a 1st-round NFL LB. Matt Roth, Dallas Clark, Robert Gallery, Eric Steinbach, Aaron Kampmann, Jared Clauss, Erik Jensen, Sean Considine, and Chad Greenway were all players that CHANGED POSITIONS at Iowa, at Ferentz' request, and are now getting playing time in the NFL. |

I'd rather talk about Rainmans wife........

Ferentz was an NFL offensive line coach. Johnathon Ogden credits him with making him into the player he is today. |

Or....we could have Rainmans wife talk to us.
Either way........ |

Do you think there is gong to be a dominos.com bowl next year?
|
Since Rainmans wife has not contacted me, I would like to add to this conversation by saying Mr. Peterson made the best decision he could at those particular times and I believe they were right with the exception of Mr. Cunningham. I think loyalty to Mr. Cunningham weighed heavily.
Being a long time KC fan in hostile territory, I have learned to keep my emotions in check and to not hope for too much. Now if I had a financial stake in this team......thats another story |
Show me the money

The main area of concern I have with CP is that he readily sacrifices draft choices (read: the future talent on the field) to get coaches he knows will do and follow what he says.

To me, Samie Parker is pedestrian at best. Mr. Holmes appears to be done. Blitzes, zone, cover 2, all forms of exotic schemes, etc. etc. will not substitute for lack of talent and (I'm truly sorry to say) coaching inconsistancies. Don't get me wrong though.....I want Mr. Edwards to suceed, what fan would'nt? |

At least one member here thought it was an indication that the Chiefs suffer from a lack of organizational control...
Youv'e got to be joking?! If you're not then someone here needs to get a grip. I'm not real fond of the whole 'such & such high school' thing. The first time or two it was funny. Now it's just lame. His 'home school' comment was funny and original. Now all he has to do is shut up and play his position. |
