NFL Network on Trent Green...

Said he met with Carl and they don't necessarily want to trade him. Offered him a new contract at a reduced rate.

unothadeal 03-05-2007 06:17 PM

Gay!!

chiefforlife 03-05-2007 06:18 PM

The new contract at a reduced rate, will make him even more tradeable...

Kerberos 03-05-2007 06:42 PM

If Trent truely does not have an ego to feed he could sign and come in to next season to compete for the starting position. If he doesn't get it he will be a VERY nicely paid backup and I would like for him to start working with the PUP Croyle and help us devolop him into a starter that we all hope he can be. Trent has the chance to really show the class we all know he has by being a team player at the end of his career just as much as he was when he got here.

I think Carl is putting the ball in Trents court and its going to be up to Trent what he does from here.

CoMoChief 03-05-2007 06:44 PM

Looks like we're gonna have a QB controversy folks.

Archie Bunker 03-05-2007 06:50 PM

Great, Brodie will still be buried on the depth chart. If they wanted to keep Green they should have let Huard walk.

Dr. Johnny Fever 03-05-2007 06:52 PM

I have all the respect in the world for Trent no matter what he decides. I'm rooting for him to stay in KC... beat out all the competetion in the pre-season and win his starting job back... and then prove on the field that he isn't finished yet.

Go Trent.

Good move, FO. Let Green look at the pictures with Croyle, and prep him, while Huard is getting his Gatorade.

Nope. Now more than ever the Chiefs have all the leverage. Trent can sign for (much) less or we cut him. Huard = insurance and negotiations leverage.

Doesn't want to invest the time sink required to be a coach. He's spent enough time away from his family as a player. He's bigtime into his kids and wife, and he wants to enjoy them. An NFL coach has less family time than a player.

We didn't even really let Huard shop around. He was retained quick.

Trent can take the pay cut or we have a solid reason to trade him. Huard proved he can manage this new offense, perhaps even better than Green.

Yahoooooooooo sports

No guarantees for Green

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports
March 5, 2007

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green was told by team president Carl Peterson that he can come back to the team next season, but will have to compete for the starting job with second-year quarterback Brodie Croyle and will have to take a pay cut to return.

Hes thinking about the situation, agent Jim Steiner said Monday night. Green, 36, is due to make $7.5 million in base salary. A salary reduction is likely regardless of whether Green plays in Kansas City next season or not.

If Green allows the Chiefs to trade him or asks them to release him, a new team would likely also ask him to take a pay cut. The question is whether Green would have a chance to make up the lost salary in incentives.

Moreover, the bigger issue for Green regards his two-year future. The Chiefs are eager to have Croyle, a third-round pick last year, get more practice time and work in the exhibition season. The Chiefs believe Croyle is their quarterback of the future and feel they have a solid backup in veteran Damon Huard, who signed a three-year contract extension before the start of free agency.

Green, who missed eight games last season after suffering a concussion in the season opener, was told that Croyle would get a lot of practice time with the first team in the offseason and during training camp. With that writing on the wall, Green may feel compelled to go elsewhere, figuring that if the change to Croyle isnt made this year, it could come the following year.

Green could have a chance to go to another team this year and establish himself as a starter for the next two years. The Miami Dolphins are reportedly interested in Green. New Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron coached Green for two years with the Washington Redskins when both were getting started in the NFL.

The Dolphins, who released Joey Harrington on Monday, currently have Daunte Culpepper and Cleo Lemon at quarterback. Getting Green would obviously put Culpepper, who missed much of last season recovering from knee surgery, on the outs with the Dolphins.

Coming into the 2006 season, Green had averaged 23 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and more than 4,000 yards passing in the previous four seasons. However, he threw seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in eight games last season. The Chiefs offense also struggled in a playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts and Green was part of the problem, botching a snap that cost the Chiefs a score early in the game and throwing the ball away early on several occasions.

Sweet, it sounds as if the Chiefs are giving Croyle every opportunity to start this year. I hope Croyle gets the nod, I want to get him some experience and see if he has anything and I want to get a good pick next year.

I am OK with making it a 3-way competition but Huard is overpaid if he is still just a backup. Trent will be overpaid if he ends up 2nd or 3rd string.

I would think it is Huard's job to lose going into camp though.

So is he making less then Huard now? If so, then we know who first and second string QB's are.

Hammock Parties 03-06-2007 12:11 AM

I don't think it's dumb. They're hedging their bets.

I think the Chiefs think Green is the superior quarterback. But they don't want to pay him a ton of money at this point. They'll gladly take Huard, who is slightly inferior to Green, at a reduced rate. But they'd like to have Green all the same, but only if he comes cheaper than he is right now.

And of course, they can always trade him if the offer is good enough. They get to have their cake and eat it too.

Trading him unfortunately is unlikely a predraft option due to accelerated signing bonus cap hit. After June first definitely.

It does not say start to me when I read it. The competition will be TG and DH with the loser traded to the first team with a QB injury.

HE has needed plenty of quarterbacks the last two years, so maybe we have 4.

Rampant but silly, the cap hit would be enormous prior to June first. You eat the entire salary signing bonus in one swallow if traded prior to June 1st. I will believe it when I see it.

Huard was signed i rekon because he will be the starter for at least some of the season. greens been great but his times upi think un less he has an outstanding preseson that he will either be the third strng on reduced pay or traded or even relesed. aswell a foxsports article or whatever dosnt reflect the views of kansas city chiefs and theres know way you can think that huard will not start because hes not mentioned there. also i think croyle will be good but i doubt that he starts from day one, then again like trent a strog preseson could change that. anyways just some thoughts. :)

I agree with you totally. It wouldn't make sense to keep both QB's.

I mean, I like the idea of both trying to compete for a starting job, but any organization would be stupid to tie up 10 million dollars into 2 QB's.

Unless, Green restructures, then that wouldn't be too bad. But, I don't see him getting paid anywhere near a backup QB. He is prolly gonna still want starting QB money.

Even if we keep him, he wins the job, and Huard is the backup. It doesn't make sense either to pay him 2.5-3 million dollars to sit on the bench. At 37 years of age, coming off a concussion, with a decline in his play this year it is hard to see a role for Green on this team right now.
Especially when it was clear Huard was the better QB last year, and the fact that we re-signed him. And even just knowing that Croyle is in the teams future plans.

*I think this gives every reason to either trade him or release him. No point in keeping Green.

You can cut up to two players at any time and designate them as post- 6/1 cuts. They could cut him now if they wanted to and not eat the entire bonus.

Get Green out of KC now. Green's been a class act and it would be nice if he went out a winner, but that ain't happening. He doesn't fit with Herm's style, he was clearly unhappy with the playcalling at the end of the year (as was LJ and Tony). If you can get a pick for him, give him permission to renegotiate with another team.

Keeping both Green and Huard on the roster will be bad for the Chiefs. And not just in terms of money.

Regardless of who wins that starting job, he's bound to have bad game at some point, which will instanly result in a QB controversy.

It also takes practice snaps away from the QB we spent a 3rd rnd pick on in hopes of developing.

I'm not neccessarily an advocate for Huard or Green either one, but I feel that keeping both of them is going to create more bad then good.

How much better do they need to be? And how much should the future factor in?

Starting Huard or Green is yet ANOTHER stop-gap, "let's go 9-7 and fill the seats" move.

There's very little chance that Croyle is 3 or 4 full losses worse than Huard or Green this season, but there's a very good chance that as soon as NEXT YEAR, Green is worth ZERO wins because he's RETIRED. And Huard isn't that far behind him.

It's time to think about the future for a change.

Johnson had been drawing interest from Denver, but felt "a strong comfort level" with Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, his former teammate. He should be a good mentor for Tony Romo to fall back on and if Romo gets hurt, a better in-game option than Drew Bledsoe. Mar. 5 - 7:03 pm et

No, because starting Croyle makes more sense than starting Huard. It's time to rebuild. I say we find out what we have in Croyle sooner than later. It's time for the Chiefs to stop with the stop-gaps and risk season ticket holders not renewing. Stop thinking business and start thinking football for a change.

The Chiefs retain rights to Huard and a reasonable contract, and if they choose Green(restructured) then they have some leverage to get a pick for Huard.....or Green if he's willing to play ball.

I don't think Huard has any trade value. If he thought he could get a decent deal somewhere else he would have stuck his toes in the free agency pool. Also, didn't Huard say he was being given the chance to compete for the starting spot?

Starting Huard or Green is yet ANOTHER stop-gap, "let's go 9-7 and fill the seats" move.

There's very little chance that Croyle is 3 or 4 full losses worse than Huard or Green this season, but there's a very good chance that as soon as NEXT YEAR, Green is worth ZERO wins because he's RETIRED. And Huard isn't that far behind him.

It's time to think about the future for a change.

Hey, if Croyle claims the job, fine. But if he stinks it up at training camp and in preseason, I don't see any reason to just hand him the job. Earn it.

Croyle will be the perfect target to pin all the losses this patchwork less talented team on. Herm will survive another year with smoke and mirrors.

Thanks for the information.

Not sure what you mean by "Herm will survive". Herm will be here as long as Peterson is.

I could see the point if he were competing against another young QB prospect.

He's not. He's competing against two guys with NO FUTURE.
