Green is free to seek a new home
CBSSPORSTLINE.COM
C. Judge The Kansas City Chiefs will allow veteran quarterback Trent Green to seek a trade, league sources said, but have not ruled out the possibility of him playing for them this year. Advertisement The decision, sources said, was reached Tuesday in the wake of recent meetings between Green and Chiefs general manager and team president Carl Peterson. Peterson on Monday informed Green the club would like to restructure a contract that pays the quarterback $7.2 million this season. That, plus coach Herman Edwards' failure to designate Green as this season's starter, convinced the quarterback to seek opportunities outside Kansas City, sources said. The Chiefs agreed to grant his request, sources said, but informed their quarterback it does not mean they are trying to peddle him nor does it mean they intend to release him. Green has been the Chiefs' starter the past six seasons after he was acquired from St. Louis in 2001 for a No. 1 draft pick. Until last season he had not missed a start with the Chiefs, but he bowed out in the season opener with a concussion that sidelined him eight games. When he returned he struggled, winding up with more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (seven) for the first time since the 2001 season. |
Miami for a second sounds great to me...
1st... DT 2nd.. WR 2nd.. OL |
"Herman Edwards' failure to designate Green as this season's starter"
I would not want to play for Herm, he already told the media that he WAS the starter. Everyone knew he wasn't, but as a player...that would pissmehoff. |

if we get anything for Trent I'll be surprised. Maybe Oakland will trade us Janikowski?

I understand the team's direction at the moment but hope this doesn't end ugly. Green deserves first class treatment.
|
I hope Green gets what he wants, whether that's a trade or the chance to compete for our starting spot.

why the **** wasnt he pulled the 2nd half of the Colts playoff game?
|
you could see in Herm's body language that he prefers Huard. He put Green in when came back because he didn't have the nads to go against football 101.
Huard is a QB reliever who suits Herm run, run, pass better than Green. |

Joint Statement from Chiefs President Carl Peterson and Jim Steiner
Mar 06, 2007, 3:28:16 PM Over the past few weeks, Chiefs President Carl Peterson and Trent Green have met to discuss Trent’s future with the Kansas City Chiefs. Peterson and CAA Sports’ Jim Steiner have jointly issued the following statement regarding QB Trent Green. Peterson and Green met again yesterday afternoon to discuss Green’s future as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. “Conversations between the Chiefs and Trent Green about his future in Kansas City continue to be amicable and productive. The Chiefs have offered Trent the opportunity to remain with the organization with a restructured contract. However, before any decisions are finalized, the Chiefs have agreed to Trent’s request to allow him to explore other potential opportunities in the National Football League. We will continue to work in unison toward a resolution that will be acceptable to all parties.” kcchiefs.com |
Anyone else have the feeling that we're saying he may return simply so others teams will cough up a draft pick for him?
I think if other teams call our bluff, we'd cut him right around training camp time. |

NFL teams are in the habit of handing out 2nd rnd pick for 37 year old QBs with post traumatic stress syndrome. |
Trent's such a great guy with a football mind, he's made friends everywhere in this league.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a team offer something like a 6th rounder for him. We should take whatever we're offered. |
So in other words, Carl is not only NOT deliberately screwing Green but he's deliberately DOING HIM A FAVOR.
:hmmm: |

Very classy on both parts. I am sad because Trent is one of my favorite players and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet but we need to get younger so I think this is the best possible move. |

I hope he starts and we suck and we get a top 5 pick. Then Carl leaves and Herm leaves and we can burn this mother ****er down and rebuild with a good GM and a good coach. |

Green should get out now while he can ...... maybe he can go get a job in a real offense and finish his career on a positive note. heck, maybe Green might even have a legit chance to win in the playoffs somewhere else. |
Detroit? :hmmm:

The point is, some here were bitching that Trent Green was getting a raw deal.
Obviously, he's not. They've been more than accomodating. |

I feel that he's more to blame than Trent. Trent's head was made of dough this past season. If he's 100% healthy and recovered, I want him as the starting QB this year (on a tight leach of course) with Damon as the (expensive) back-up and Brodie waiting in the wing. |
If Garcia can get snatched up quickly, then Trent Green will find a home in the NFL. I know that Garcia is coming off a much better season, but the market is there for an older, veteran QB. I've heard the Dolphins are interested.

I don't see how this move is "classy". It's not unclassy, either -- it's just pure business. |
larry johnson, on the other hand, should be getting that creeping "screwed" feeling.
the letting go of Green signals that we are going full tilt Hermie ball. larry Johnson's career should last about 2 more years. |

its to bad about green id like to have an old vet around to school croyle for another year or two. imo i wouldnt like to see croyle thrown into the mix if huard goes down cause letin a young dog get bit to early will ruin him.

The following is the portion of the 01/11/2007 press conference which directly relates to Herm's comments regarding Trent Green's status as a starter: "Q: Herm, back on December 25th you were asked if Trent Green was your starter going into next season and you said 'yeah why wouldn't he be?'. Have you changed your mind on that? Herm: No I have not. Q: So he's your starter going into '07? Herm: Yeah, all the starters are the starters right now. Q: Could that change? Herm: Oh yeah, alot of things could change. But right now as we start the '07 season he's the starter. There will be competition and that's the whole key. It doesn't matter if a guy's the starter on paper or not. What you want to do on your football team - and we did a pretty good job of it this year - you create competition at the positions. That's what we have to do through the whole roster." COACH-SPEAK 101 FINAL EXAM: Write a 1,000-word essay in response to the following question - Now just exactly what is the difference between stating "Yeah, all the starters are the starters right now (going into 2007).." and "..yeah, alot of things could change (regarding the status of the starters).."? CLASS DISMISSED! |

they are doing that for the team ....... not for Green. They hope that they can get something in trade instead of just having to cut Green for nothing. |

Spin it any way you want, Trent Green is being treated MORE than fairly. |

So how much $ is Geathers going to cost Trent?

Herm doesn't want Green and they are dumping him. They hope by letting Green seek a trade they can grab and extra draft pick. it's business fair or not fair as little to do with it tell me ....... how would they treat Green unfairly in this situation? |

Face it, the only way Green gets a starting job somewhere next year is if he changes teams. |

Sad but true.... Trents has shown a disturbing history of getting his team to the endzone more than once a game and this troubles our current leader.. I wish Trent the best! He has more class and character in his pink than our current coach could ever dream of. |

Boss "John, john come on in and have a seat" John "hi boss, what can i do for you?" Boss "well our Christmas season isn't going very well" John "that's too bad, anything i can do?" Boss "Yea, we are cutting back. I'm sorry ... you're fired" John "what ... i've been here for 15 years!!" Boss "sorry" John "but i have 6 kids and my wife just went on dialysis!!" Boss "Think of it this way ... we are giving you time to spend Christmas with your family and time to find a new job" John "Dam" Boss "glad we could accommodate you and your family John" . |

Say you and I had a reservation at the same restaurant. My reservation is first. I see that the table they prepared is next to the kitchen and bathroom. I don't want to sit there so I say "take my table." I'm not accomodating you, I'm trying to get a better seat for myself. Same thing here. |
if i'm Green i tell my agent to use this ability to find a trade to find me a new job.
then i refuse a pay cut ... don't find a trade ... then just go to my new team after that chiefs cut me. that's what they get for reducing their QB to fit their reduced offense instead vice-versa. why do Carl's job and find the trade/get a draft pick for a team that's showing you the door. |

Trent green got hurt last year trying to make something out Herm's crap offense. He took off running even though he's not a scramble type Quarterback. He didn't slide early because he was anxious to try and squeeze every yard out for Herm's crap offense. Green got hurt and now the Chiefs are firing him. the NFL is a cutthroat business and Green is getting sliced ... lets not make the Chiefs out to be nice guys. |

How is this different than if Trent doesn't find a trade partner and refuses to restructure? |
Considering that Miami's coaches are reportedly not that wild about Culpepper, and that a guy like Wes Welker of all people just went for a 2nd round pick, I think people are underestimating what Trent might be worth.

Doesn't his signing bonus accelerate into this years cap if they just released him outright? After June 1 that is when they can spread out right? |

It might end up being for a 2008 conditional pick based on PT and health...
|
He's hurt, past his prime and shell shocked.
Welcome to Oakland Mr. Green :D |
Skins will give us a 1st and 2nd this year, 1st and 2nd next year and a 1st a year after that.
They are trading fools. |
Shhhh don't tell them how old he is.

Quote:
Thanks man I needed that. |
Miami is waiting for us to waive him, to get him cheap. Waiving Green during preseason, will mean a tidy retirement from the NFL, to selling Gutter Helmets.

Most accomodating would be to cut Trent, pay him all monies due and let him go where he wants. Least accomodating would be to trade Trent without allowing him any say in where he goes. What the Chiefs are doing falls in between the two extremes. Trent can go where he wants, as long as his new team is willing to compensate the Chiefs. It is, to all concerned, a very fair arrangement. |
