Possible Larry Johnson Holdout?

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/spor...S__Brown_.html

* The Chiefs are bracing for a training-camp holdout by running back Larry Johnson. Johnson, who has rushed for 3,539 yards and 37 touchdowns the last two seasons, has 3 years left on the deal he signed as a rookie in 2003.

He is scheduled to make $1.85 million this year and $967,000 next year.

The Chiefs have been talking to Johnson's agent about a new deal, but the two sides still are far apart. A club source put the odds of Johnson holding out this summer at 50-50.

Johnson, who owns a home in New York with rapper Jay-Z, showed up in Kansas City Sunday for the first time since the team began its voluntary workouts last month and has worked out with his teammates the last 2 days.

He has indicated that he will attend the team's postdraft minicamp in 2 weeks.

Those Rappers and agents are such a great influence.

We need to give him more money so he can afford his own home.

TBH, we have the upper hand.

If he wants to hold out... then just let him. He will still be under contract to KC until he plays 3 more years for us or we trade him. If he wants to end his career early, then f'ing let him.

We still have a pretty good RB core without LJ, though WITH him it is incredible. Bennett, assuming he can stay healthy, has been a starter in the past and has a Pro Bowl under his belt.

We also have that kid we just drafted... his name escapes me at the moment.

With 3 years left in his contract, he has almost ZERO barganing leverage.

As it is with his current contract, he has earned more than many of us will in our lifetime.

Assuming he can stay healthy?

That's like assuming that tomorrow mornign you're going to sprout wings and fly to work...

noa 05-02-2007 01:57 PM

I'm not surprised that the two parties are still far apart on a contract when you start off asking for $80 million. I think we'll hammer it out in the end, though, and make him the highest paid RB in the league.

He can void his last two... so this is technically his last year of his contract...

Codered 05-02-2007 02:03 PM

Wouldn't it be awesome to start the season with out Allen and Johnson?

I'm just saying....

Ahhh... did not know that.

Either way, he can either play for his contract amount and get his payday next year... or he can hold out and still owe us a year for a long time to come.

Don't get me wrong... I want him here, but 80 mil is ludicrous.

Reerun_KC 05-02-2007 02:06 PM

If I was him I would hold out as well. Herm will run his dick into the dirt agian this year, which is no surprise...

I would hold Carl to the freaking fire and make him show me the money...

LJ holds all the cards and the Chiefs/Herm are desperate for any offense... LJ is all the Chiefs have.

OctoberFart 05-02-2007 02:17 PM

He has to be able to feed his family and he can't do it right now.

He doesn't have a family.

Direckshun 05-02-2007 02:30 PM

LJ's a monster, and you can build an offense around him for the next four years.

I support giving him a huge paycheck, but not for 8 years, $80 million. 4 years, $40 million is where I'd feel good about getting it done.

But that's still $10 million a year, and that's leadership numbers. LJ is not a leader on this team, and it's hard to see where the Chiefs would like to draw the line.

blueballs 05-02-2007 02:37 PM

his market value is 0
no has offered a trade pick
not even the Dolfins

4 years $40 million sounds about right. The man has to be paid now. Career ending injuries can happen at any time. Ask Terrell Davis and Priest.

The man's job description changed radically last season. He played and proved that he's a beast as a season-long starter. Now it's time for the Chiefs to pay him like one.

Halfcan 05-02-2007 03:45 PM

LJ can't feed his Grandma on 1.85 mil-I feel sorry for him.

Email Carl, I am sure he gives a shit what a Cleveland bronco fan thinks-probably even more than we do.

boogblaster 05-02-2007 03:53 PM

Pay him fair..he is our RB of the present and future...

Fair? That never happens... dude will want the fattest contract in the land for RBs...

Joie 05-02-2007 04:00 PM

What is the average pay for a running back of LJ's caliber?

OctoberFart 05-02-2007 04:02 PM

Someone needs to tell carl to give him a max deal. GoQueer can be his agent.

I don't know... but, with a guy like LJ (consensus top 3-4 RB in all of football), the starting price begins with the last big contract signed by one of the other consensus top 3-4 RBs. Tomlinson's deal is the hurdle to clear.

Any idea what Tomlinson's contract is?

Max deals are in basketball. Trollish and misinformed is no way to go through life.

According to this, its 8 years, $60 million, with $21 million guaranteed:

Thank you.

The 4 year 40 million dollar deal sounds more than fair then.

Thig Lyfe 05-02-2007 04:10 PM

It's not like he needs training camp anyway.

BigRock 05-02-2007 04:56 PM

If Carl was worried, we probably would have drafted a RB better and higher up than Kolby Smith.

Hammock Parties 05-02-2007 06:12 PM

Pure speculation. He won't hold out.

If you know how NFL contracts work, he's going to sign at least a 7 year contract with some ridiculous number that means nothing...it's all in the guaranteed dollars in the NFL.

Hootie 05-02-2007 06:17 PM

Plus, LJ always bitched about getting off to a late start. No way does he hold out and **** himself out of another year. LJ wants to do down as one of the best ever...

He'll play without a new contract...but he'll be a huge bitch about it.

Fortunately, we can franchise and trade him after the season if he pulls a Trent and refuses to play for us.

Honestly, I really don't know all that much about NFL contracts. I have always loved football, but I've just started paying attention to negotiations and trades in the last few seasons.

Slick32 05-02-2007 06:46 PM

Johnson has no reason to hold out and especially will not benefit from holding out. I would think his goal is to keep his numbers as high as he can so he can have leverage when he is ready to be either a UFA or a FA.

It is my opinion that he wants out of KC and will do what it takes to get out.

Halfcan 05-02-2007 08:12 PM

Sorry, LJ. We gotta pay Trent.

greg63 05-02-2007 08:18 PM

I don't see Carl forking over 80 mil. over the next 8 years.

ding - we have a winner. I would love to see LJ end a long illustrious career in KC, but I just dont think he sees KC as anything but a stepping stone. If a player decides he doesnt want to be here- there isnt really anything we can do about it... just like with trent.
