L.A. Chieffan 05-05-2007 12:40 AM

Corrales V Castillo. Now there was a DAMN good fight. Probably the best I've ever seen. Anybody got a link to that fight??? Jesus, I loved that fight.

kcxiv 05-05-2007 01:03 AM

Ooh, here it is! Go OScar, even though i think he's goin to lose in to the judges.

pr_capone 05-05-2007 04:40 AM

Column: Can this fight save boxing?

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- At the sports book inside the massive MGM Grand hotel-casino, the squares were trickling in to bet the big fight. As squares usually do, they were going for the dog, who on this day wore a big smile underneath his ball cap.

Oscar De La Hoya hasn't been in this position much, but it doesn't seem to bother him. Maybe that's because he's going to make $30 million or so no matter what the odds are when he steps into the ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a megafight that harkens back to boxing's glory days.

The wise guys who bet the big money will mostly be putting it on the favorite in this fight. But casual fans, or squares to the bookies who take their money, are believers when their fighter talks about himself.
Or maybe he just believes in himself more than he believes the wise guys who set the odds. "Don't be surprised if I'm faster than Mayweather," De La Hoya warned. "I don't see this fight going the distance."

Those, of course, are fighting words, though a bit tamer than the ones the two boxers have been throwing at each other since they launched this promotion a few months back in a big city tour.
By the time they finished at a surprisingly quiet final news conference on Wednesday, there was more than enough material for HBO to fill its reality show. And there was more than enough animosity between the two fighters to guarantee there will be at least some bad blood, if not real blood, spilled when the two finally meet Saturday night.

"This is not golf. This is not tennis," Mayweather said. "It's a brutal sport. Blood, sweat and tears."
Money, too, if you're a marketing machine like De La Hoya or good enough to be the fighter many consider the best pound-for-pound in the world, like Mayweather. Their fight will likely be the richest ever in a sport that's supposed to be dying, and both fighters will be well compensated.

De La Hoya will take the biggest cut because, well, he's the golden boy. He's not only the main attraction in the fight, but the promoter as well, and he figures to bank twice as many millions as his undefeated opponent.

Not that Mayweather is lacking for cash. As he is quick to point out, he lives in a 12,000-square-foot mansion, drives Bentleys and Maybachs, and employs people to take care of his every whim.
OK, so he was wearing an $8 T-shirt at the press conference. But on his left wrist was a diamond-studded watch worth $500,000. Around his neck was a glittering cross and chain worth another $300,000. On his pinky finger was a $200,000 ring, bringing this day's jewelry tab to a cool million dollars. In his pocket was a wad of bills.
Some walking around money, nothing really serious.
"About 30 thousand," Mayweather said.

Mayweather has more than earned his keep for this fight, even before he steps into the ring to challenge De La Hoya for the 154-pound title. He's not only the most gifted fighter of his era, but he's generated enough subplots for this fight to fill a full season of the "Sopranos."
Chief among those is his relationship with his father, who taught him to box and trained him before the two had a bitter split and Floyd Sr. went on to train De La Hoya. The elder Mayweather isn't doing that for this fight, not out of love for his son but because De La Hoya wouldn't meet his asking price of $2 million.

Father and son briefly reunited, but split again when Floyd Jr. insisted on being trained by his uncle, Roger, instead of his father. Roger Mayweather became available when he was released from a local jail in March after serving a six-month sentence for domestic assault.
"Like the OJ trial is how they had me," Roger Mayweather said. "But it was OK. I did my time."

Roger Mayweather sat next to his fighter on the dais Wednesday, while Floyd Sr. watched from the cheap seats of the Hollywood Theater. Floyd Sr. will be at the fight because De La Hoya gave him two ringside tickets.

That seemed to irritate Floyd Jr., who said he would have been more than happy to give his father tickets.
"I've got plenty of tickets for my dad. I've got a half million dollars worth of tickets," he said. "I love my father."
De La Hoya loves his family, too, as evidenced by video clips so sugary you wonder whether he was being nominated for fighter of the year or sainthood.

"When you have a good soul, good things happen to you," De La Hoya intoned on the big screen behind the dais.
De La Hoya wasn't the only one doing some selling at this final opportunity to sell. The man representing the official tequila of the fight opened a bottle on the dais, poured a shot and drank it. Next to him, official cans of fight beer were prominently displayed, and a woman from Southwest talked about how she was honored to work for the official airline of the fight.

No one, though, was more honored than Jose Sulaiman, head of the World Boxing Council, which will make a nice chunk of change for sanctioning the fight. Sulaiman compared it to historic fights like the two between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling - minus the Nazi overtones, of course.

And, in a fight full of outlandish claims, Sulaiman saved the most bizarre for last. "We hope this fight will show that boxing is the cleanest of all sports," he said.

Mayweather has the speed...De La Hoya has the savy...should be a good fight ......

TrickyNicky 05-05-2007 07:25 AM

Mayweather is going to trounce him. Its too bad the price of the PPV is too high, otherwise I might order it.

If you were closer, I would split it with you. What is the price....$49.95? I still may have to break down and order it, which is saying something, because I don't order boxing anymore. UFC yes, boxing no.

TrickyNicky 05-05-2007 07:33 AM

Its $54.95 :(

I just can't justify that for two fights.

Lzen 05-05-2007 07:36 AM

Why doesn't boxing just get a TV contract? PPV is crap. For a sport that isn't even one of the most popular in this country, they sure price it like they believe it is gold. :shake: I suppose that won't change as long as there is plenty of betting on those fights.

The odds were 35-1 Mayweather earlier in the week. A buddy of mine was down in Vegas so I had him throw $25 on Del La Hoya for me. I don't think he has much of a shot unless he gets a lucky shot, nor do I want him to win, but at 35-1, I had to do it.

afchiefs 05-05-2007 08:40 AM

shame. Correles' peak of his career. He never matched the beauty of that fight again. and Castillo was never able to make weight after this fight. The trilogy was worthless after the first fight.

Meanwhile, back to the fight of the year. There is a sports bar a block from my suburbia community, yet they only show MMA PPVs. How weak. Looks like Ill be staying home and watching the internet stream of the fight. I want De La Hoya to win. (because i have an autographed boxing glove of his) but I think Mayweather wins by decision.

Personally after watching these HBO 24/7 specials I have a very strong dislike for Mayweather, one of the scenes with he and his boy 50 cent left a bad taste in my mouth and I hope that somehow De La Hoya on Cinco De Mayo will get in a punch that knocks his cocky ass out.

Mayweather is gonna kick his ass.

It really seems like they are hyping this one, trying to breath some life back into boxing...i still cant bring myself to care.

Boxing, for all intents & purposes, is dead, MMA is the future.

None of these boxers would last 1 round in the cage.

Yeah, it gavels my ass to have to fork out that kind of green if a guy wants to watch the fight and normally I would say the hell with it. BUT....Mrs. Bwana is out of town so I'm smoking ribs right now for the evening feast. I also plan on drinking some tasty adult beverages later and putting a dent in the beer supply out in the man fridge. With this in mind, the next logical step is to order the damn fight. I will also record it as well. I have been waking up at 3 AM for the past 4 nights and it's catching up with me. God forbid if I shelled out $55 bones, fell asleep in my recliner and missed the fight. :shake:

I was going to hit the Wild West Saloon and play some poker, but with my new found lack of sleep, that would be a bad idea. When I do play, I get a little bent if I lose, which normally doesn't happen. I figure with the sleep thing, I would lose my edge and take a beating, so I tossed that idea out the window.

In the long run, staying home and shilling out the money for the fight will likely cost me less money. :)

Sounds like a plan, maybe the next roadtrip we should head your way, those ribs among other things sound great. :toast:

I ordered it in high def. I never ordered fights, so i said the hell with it. I wanna watch this bitch in 1080i. Wish direct tv was 1080p though. Anyways, It should be a good one. IF Oscar cant knock him down Meyweather wil win by decision. I just dont see Floyd trying to stay in there and slug it out. Floyd is a great boxing dont get me wrong, but i dont think he's ever been in a high profle fight like this. Its going to be fun.

I'm reminded of Hagler/Leonard,Leonard was supposedly washed up,bad eye etc. Hagler was supposed to kill him, still one of the greatest fights ever.

For those in KC, the 810 Zone on 119th St. in Leawood is showing the fight. No cover charge, but you might eat and drink more than the PPV would cost.

Valiant 05-05-2007 12:39 PM

Hopefully Mayweather lays the smack down.

I saw Oscar getting a shady decision in a big fight once before, so I'm inclined to think the same thing could happen if it goes to the judges.

He wont win if it goes to 12 rounds. I seen Oscar lose fights going into a decision when he had one. It cannot go 12 rounds or he will lose.

The best thing that could happen to pro boxing would be for ABC to revive Wide World of Sports.

Bwana 05-05-2007 08:38 PM

2nd fight:

Through 5 rounds, looks about even but Hernandez was knocked down in round 4.

Blah blah blah.......bring on the real fight.

Bwana 05-05-2007 08:43 PM

2nd fight through 7th looks like Rocky warez (sp) is slightly up on Hernanzez. Kind a a big *Yawn* so far other than the knock down of Hernandez.

I honestly don't keep up with boxing much, if any anymore but when was the last time De La Hoya actually won a fight, I mean didn't Felix and Sugar Shane (twice) handle him and he hasn't really fought anyone since?

Round 11/12 of the scrubs...still even.

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:00 PM

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:07 PM

DLH won his last fight against a very washed up Ricardo Mayorga. The two fights before that:

A decision win (very debatable) against Alex Sturm.

A KO loss to Bernard Hopkins.

I'm pretty sure his last huge win was a KO against Vargas in 2002.

Jim Jones 05-05-2007 09:32 PM

HAHA Floyd coming out in Mexican garb... epic.

I suspect De La Hoya is too old to handle Mayweather. I hope I'm wrong.

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:37 PM

DE LA HOYA VS MAYWEATHER

Mayweather enters the ring with a sombrao on, crowd booing. Sonbrao on backwords.

OD enters the ring clearly the crown favorite.

I think Mayweather is going to win, but with my bet, I make a lot of money if OD pulls it out. If Mayweather wins, I've only lost $25.00. Odds at my betting time 35/1. Lets Get Ready To Rumble!! The Start of 12 rounds of boxing. Crown 90/10 cheering for DE LA HOYA.

HolmeZz 05-05-2007 09:39 PM

It's a sombrero.

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:41 PM

Thanks for the recap, I appreciate it. Yeah i remember that Vargas fight - Vargas turned out to be not such a bad ass, he was calling Oscar his son and shit for a few years, heh

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:51 PM

Bwana 05-05-2007 09:53 PM

DLH caught Floyd in corner and abused him. It moved in center of right Mayweather picked ODH apart. Fight even IMHO 2/2.
