'Islamic radicals' arrested in plot to kill Fort Dix soldiers
POSTED: 10:25 a.m. EDT, May 8, 2007
Story Highlights• NEW: Those arrested are "Islamic radicals," U.S. attorney's office says
• News conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET
• Sources say six men were planning to shoot soldiers at Army base
• Informant played key role in investigation, sources say

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Six "Islamic radicals" involved in a plot to kill U.S. soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey were arrested Monday night, the U.S. attorney's office in New Jersey said Tuesday.

One of the suspects was born in Jordan, another in Turkey, the U.S. attorney's office said. The rest are believed to be from the former Yugoslavia, "either U.S. citizens or living illegally in the United States," the office said in a statement.

"Their alleged intention was to conduct an armed assault on the army base and to kill as many soldiers as possible," according to the statement.

The six are expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Camden on Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement.

The district attorney scheduled a news conference at 2:30 p.m. ET to discuss the case.

The men were planning to use automatic weapons to shoot soldiers at the Army post, according to a federal law enforcement source and a senior government source.

The men, some of whom were related to each other, had been doing surveillance and planning "for a while," and they trained in the Poconos Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania, according to the federal law enforcement source.

They played paintball and test-fired weapons, a law enforcement source said.

New Jersey state troopers and the FBI were involved in investigating and arresting the suspects. An informant played a key role in the investigation, the sources said.

One of the sources said there is a video and an audiotape of the planning.

The Newark Star-Ledger reported on its Web site that the men took a videotape of their practice sessions to a store to have it burned to a DVD, and that a store employee contacted the FBI because of the video's contents.

Sources told the Star-Ledger the men were lured to a meeting with an FBI informant posing as an arms dealer. The newspaper's sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

While authorities are glad to have arrested them, the individuals are "hardly hard core terrorists," one law enforcement source said.

Another source said that while the allegations are "troubling," they are "not the type that made the hair on the back of your neck stand up."

Fort Dix is used to train members of the Army Reserve and National Guard for missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.

It was used in 1999 to house ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo, according to the Defense Department Web site.

CNN's Kevin Bohn and Kelli Arena contributed to this report.

Yeah, but I figured this might deserve some other spin than the usual garbage from over there

MODS - I suppose this should be moved?

Frazod 05-08-2007 09:02 AM

They should have let the motherfuckers go ahead with the attack and ambushed them. :bang:

Eleazar 05-08-2007 09:04 AM

I'm not sure that an Army base is the first place I would choose to 'assault'.

I suspect it will come to light that these chaps aren't the brightest of the bunch.

It’s probably not quite as stupid an idea as you guys might think. The only ones walking around with a weapon will be the MP’s. I’m sure there are combat troops stationed there, but their weapons are all locked up in armories. It’d take probably 30 minutes or more for the armors to dispatch weapons and in that time, these guys could’ve caused some serious damage, killed several soldiers. Then imagine the coup that’d be for the radical Islamist cheerleaders.

I see your point. My only point of reference is Whiteman AFB, and that seemed pretty hairy if one showed up with weapons. And, I suppose if these guys are of Eastern European origin, they don't look the typical Islamic terrorist.

Now....someone hurry along and make sure they're being treated kindly and in an unoffensive manner that doesn't disparage or insult their religion or culture while giving them due process.

This statement says alot:

I know the sentries at Great Lakes Naval Base aren't armed, and unless the sailors stationed there happen to own personal firearms (which would obviously not be automatic weapons), the only armed (and trained) people are the civilian base cops. I would like to think that they have some sort of SWAT unit, but I never saw them.

These fuckers could create all sorts of havok before finally being put down.

He was too drunk to correct. :D

Smed1065 05-08-2007 09:44 AM

Very true because the only place where I had a assigned weapon was in Korea. I was in aviation and never assigned a weapon while stationed state side except for qualifying.

Funny how the news clip I read about it didn't mention that they were "Islamic radicals". I'd have given you 100-1 if they weren't, but still, why leave that out of the news report? Had they been McVeigh types, some how I doubt their ideology would have been ignored.

Yeah, all I heard this morning was "Yugoslavian nationals."

Like it wasn't perfectly obvious just from the nature of the story that they weren't islamanuts.

So does figuring that out make me a racist, or merely not an idiot?

Great Lakes is the last place my dad was stationed before he retired. Very nice base, pretty part of the country.

New Jersey seems to have a very large contingent of radical muslims, i'll never forget the giant street party one islamic school held right after 9/11...let classes out, shut down the street in front...totally unbelievable.

I kept hoping for the Sopranos to show up & start cracking skulls.

They were caught based on a tip from a clerk who was asked to dub a video tape of them shooting automatic weapons and shouting about jihad.

I think we could solve this problem and a host of others if we just sterilized everyone (except hot chicks) from New Jersey. I'm sure this is something we can all agree on.
