What to wear to Interview?

I know everyone wants to talk about the big win but could you guys offer a little help my way. I have a interview along with some written tests tomorrow with the Union Pacific for a job that includes welding and repairing. What would you guys wear to this? Khakis or jeans? Polo or a button up?

seclark 10-01-2007 10:40 AM

show some cleavage.

Khakis, polo shirt

a good tip is to dress one level above your expected job. I assume you will wear jeans and a denim shirt/tee shirt in the rail shop.

DMAC 10-01-2007 10:41 AM

Your Chiefs jersey.

Be sure to wear something you would feel comfortable doing the job in as well, I have heard some people not get jobs similar to this one because they were overdressed, as confusing as that is.

StcChief 10-01-2007 10:51 AM

Just remember...

You don't get a 2nd chance to make a first impression.

Morphius advise sounds reasonable....

I have always heard you should wear what you would to do the job. In this case, nice work shirt and levis with work boots would seem to be the attire to me. What if they want you to do some welding to show what you can do? Got to be ready to go to work IMO.

I have heard it from a couple repair techs where they brought them in and actually had them mess around in stuff, which you can't do if you are too dressed up.

I'm not familiar with that type of work. but have been quized/grilled etc in an interview. Asked to do white board work....

If you don't have a a cert or something they may want you to do something on site.

Either way once you pass you'll likely be on probation for a while, which varies from job to job.

I would think communication and fit are the starting point

Iowanian 10-01-2007 11:24 AM

I'm completely on board with dressing 1 level above what you would at work. If its a khaki and Polo job...at least wear a tie.

if you're taking a welding test....it doesn't make much sense to me to wear a tie for that.

Its a good rule of thumb in business too....dress 1 level above your client-audience.

Well it is for an Apprentice Freight Car Repairer. From what they have said it will be about 4 hours of their Skilled Craft Battery Test and if I pass I get an interview and be prepared to spend majority of your day there. I hope I dont get the shits.

I always wear this.

Hog's Gone Fishin 10-01-2007 12:07 PM

I would wear rubber boots and a shoulder length glove.

trndobrd 10-01-2007 12:22 PM

Wear the khakis and polo. Bring a pair of jeans and workshirt with you (leave in the car). If they want you to do some welding after the written exam you can change if time allows.

Hog's Gone Fishin 10-01-2007 12:27 PM

You could wear a dress. You know, just to show them your not prejudice against transvestites.

Delano 10-01-2007 12:38 PM

If you can't weld in a tuxedo, you don't deserve the position. Rent a black and white from the Men's Warehouse and TAKE YOUR JOB!

In this case I would wear khaki's, boots, polo tucked in with belt. Keeping jeans & t shirt in the car would be a good idea. Obviously the important part is to be a good interview and prove yourself to them.

You can research them here with reviews by their own employees

Good luck.

Thanks for the help macdawg. :) After visiting that site and reading the forums I could give a shit if they offer me a job. Sounds pretty crappy. Looks like I will be looking around for another :banghead:

just remember that anyone can post bullshit on the internet, and usually the ones that take time to post, are the ones who are full of shit.

ILikeBigTiddys 10-01-2007 03:36 PM

You got a point. It's usually the pissed off people that actually take the time to do something like that.

Heh... that one had me rolling ROFL ROFL

macdawg 10-01-2007 04:41 PM

I would research any company I would work at. I want to hear the good and the bad and wasn't trying to steer you away from the job, but its better to understand the downsides of the job before doing it. Typical posters are disgruntled employees, who you can learn from, learn not to think the way they do and if the job is for you.

The job sounds pretty fun, and pay is decent. The downsides are they appear to have downgraded some engineers down to conductors, long/odd hours & weekends, like any job going to be assholes there.

If you have an open schedule and your family/friends can deal with the odd hours/weekends part I would say it sounds like a pretty cool job!

PastorMikH 10-01-2007 04:44 PM

Show up in your welding leathers, helmet, and wearing your tool belt and tell them you're ready to go to work if the price is right.

:)

Good luck with it.
