2007: LJ could be out a while. Possible long term injury?

Consider this a rumor.
Again I'm not saying this is fact but someone who has told me medical "stuff" about Chiefs players in the past and it has turned out to be true told me this.

LJ has a garden variety sprained ankle but thats not worrying the Chiefs or LJ.

They think its his foot thats is the real concern and specifically worst case scenerio Plantar Fasciitis or a pulled ligment in the foot. It happened when LJ tryed to pull on his foot when it was under Hawk and stretched that muscle on the bottom of his foot and in the arch. It could take 3-4 weeks of rest or in rare cases to a year to recover. But until the swelling goes down they won't know for sure.

Again just FYI passing it along.

siberian khatru 11-05-2007 06:32 PM

The PF (or a Lis Franc) crossed my mind Sunday. I almost posted it on the game thread as a semi-joke, but thought better of it.

FAX 11-05-2007 06:33 PM

Just our luck. We should have known this would happen as soon as Carl signed the deal. I swear, sometimes I think we are the most fucked up team of all times.

I stated this yesterday based on my previous injury expierence and the video replay of the hit.

Deberg_1990 11-05-2007 06:34 PM

Better let him heal up. This team isnt going anywhere but a first round playoff exit again this year if we even make it that far....

tk13 11-05-2007 06:35 PM

Priest isn't coming back. :)

OnTheWarpath15 11-05-2007 06:36 PM

Exactly what I told my wife when she called on the drive home.

If he has even a mild plantar fasciitis injury, he'll be out the rest of the year, IMO.

Or at minimum, ineffective. Putting weight on it is hard enough, but pushing off and cutting would be excruciating.

Absolutely.

If in fact it is a PF injury, they tend to linger without the proper rest and treatment.

I want him ready to go at 100% next summer, not limping around because Carl wanted to make sure to win that 8th game.

So these don't heal like normal?

How different is this from a pulled groin? Or a pulled bicep muscle?

No, this is what ESPN is reporting...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3096101

Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler doesn't have the hairline fracture in his left leg he feared.

An MRI on Monday was negative, but coach Mike Shanahan said he didn't know if Cutler would practice much this week or be under center Sunday at Kansas City.

"He doesn't have a stress fracture, which is a positive," Shanahan said. "The X-rays were negative, the MRI was negative. So, we'll see how sore he is. Right now he's quite sore. And we'll get a chance to see how he feels on Wednesday."

Cutler, who declined to comment Monday, took a helmet to his lower leg, which was badly bruised, in the first half of the Broncos' 44-7 loss at Detroit on Sunday. He was carted off the field and although immediate X-rays were negative, Cutler said he feared his leg was broken.

The 2 people I knew that had PF took FOREVER to heal completely. Both over a year. It's incredibly difficult to keep from re-aggravating it.

I've read about people taking 18 months to fully heal. Obviously, it's a case by case basis, but everything I've read says 4-6 weeks minimum.

I listened to sports radio all day, petro and the others did not say much about it, but ESPN came on like they were breaking the story.

kcfanXIII 11-05-2007 07:08 PM

i love how some are talking like THIS will keep us out of the playoffs. if what i'm reading about this PF injury on here is true, i hope LJ spends a few months on his couch in his NY condo. he can have Jay-Z over and they can lay down some tracks. as long as he rests that foot, i don't care what he does or where he goes. there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BRING HIM BACK this season. we'll lose enough that we'll be out of the race, so that maybe, just maybe, croyle could get some experience. if we rush him back, it could linger into NEXT season, which according to some around here, is what we're really playing for anyways.

Tits McGee 11-05-2007 07:39 PM

In SD we got some sports radio honk from Philly, who is supposedly close to the "King" himself Carl. And he made it sound that LJ's injury, was one of those week to week deals.

Reerun_KC 11-05-2007 07:39 PM

Is this the ligiment in the arch of your foot? or the muscle in the arch of your foot?

I pulled that, actually a minor tear playing fast pitch softball.. Running to first and stepped in a small hole on the back side of the bag... I couldnt walk for a couple of days nor play softball for well over 18 months.. I kept re-agravating it so easily...

I am no where near the athlete LJ is.. Just a fat beer drinking softball player... But I assume it will be hard for him to come back and very painful, that I can atest to...

I've had a plantar wart. That ****er hurt.

Hammock Parties 11-05-2007 09:20 PM

It didn't really look to me like the bottom of Larry's foot was the part that got injured, BTW. That's where the plantar ligament is. It looked to me like the top and side of Larry's foot got wrenched and twisted, which would mean a sprain or maybe some cartilage got ****ed or something.

'Hamas' Jenkins 11-05-2007 09:21 PM

Plantar Fasciitis is something that is more chronic and related to long term standing and weight bearing.

It's much more likely that it's a Lis Franc injury. That's the injury that pretty much ended Duce Staley's career, but Kevin Jones only missed a year...but those are Lis Franc Fractures and dislocations

From wiki:

At present, such an injury happens typically when one steps into a hole and the foot twists heavily. Falling from a height of two or three stories can also cause this fracture. American football players commonly get this injury when they have their foot pointing down and someone lands on their heel. There are also other ways of receiving such an injury.

Treatment

Treatment options include operative or non-operative treatment. If the dislocation is less than 2mm, the fracture can be managed with a POP(plaster of Paris) or dynacast for 6 weeks. The patient's injured limb cannot bear weight during this period. For operative treatment, percutaneous screws +/- k-wire will be used for internal fixation of the fracture. Again, the patient's injured limb cannot bear weight. The screws/k-wires must be removed before weight bearing.

I've had PF for years, and sometimes when I get up in the morning I have to hop around until it stretches out. However, there are special inserts for your shoes, which can be obtained from a podiatrist. If you use the inserts it's not a problem. Mind you, I could run like a deer when I was young and in the Airborne and Special Forces. Now I'm 65 and a little slower, but the PF is not a big problem with the inserts.

BS. You can fight through plantar fasciitis. All it takes is tape and they even make neoprene supports for it. It is painful but it is bearable. Especially with the painkillers they take before a game. ;)
