What's in a name

I need help naming my new puppy, please post some good ideas and maybe I'll make a poll later or just pick whichever I think fits.

I lost my best friend Max on September 20th. He was the best dog that ever lived and I've been pretty much heart broken ever since. To some I imagine this may seem extremely lame, as a lot of people view dogs as just an animal that takes up space and eats food, but some of us are dog people. I wasn't all that big of a dog person until I got Max. At the time I was living alone while stationed out in Utah and thought walking a golden retriever puppy in the park would be a great way to meet women... it was, but what I didn't expect was to get a best friend in the process.

I didn't think I'd ever get another dog because I just couldn't imagine the new dog being able to even come close to the greatness that was Max, but it's been a little over a month now and I just miss having all the love, friendship, and energy crashing around my house that a dog brings.

Anyway, enough with the sob story I guess... here is my new addition to the household and he needs a name! Sarcasm and humor are welcome, but I'd appreciate some serious contributions if at all possible :p

HE is an AKC Golden Retriever, pretty active so far though I think he is still getting used to the new house and family, I just got him last night.

Interesting, I had actually considered Loki. The names I've come up with so far are Jake, Ralph, and Truman but I'm just not sure on any of those and thought I'd try to get some more ideas.

FAX 11-06-2007 11:48 AM

Barney. It was amazing. I looked at the first picture you posted, Mr. joesomebody, and the name "Barney" flashed in my mind as if it were written in a clear, dark sky with blazing fireworks.

Either that or Loki.

3 heads are better than one I suppose, but might get a bit tedious yelling, "HERE Cerberous"

I've been waiting for just that kind of revelation. Barney isn't bad, my Grandpa's dog when I was growing up was a Barney. I'll definitely add it to the list for consideration.

He's a cute little devil isn't he?

A more conventional name but still unique would be Brennin the Gailic word for fire

My Brother and I name our dogs after Native American tribes:

Seneca, Cheyenne, Apache, Cherokee.. etc...

talastan 11-06-2007 12:01 PM

Cujo, teach him to stike fear into the hearts of those that would mess with you, your family, or your home!!! :fire:

On second thought, Barney is nice!! o:-)

Gonzo 11-06-2007 12:05 PM

You know I like it when people give their dogs common people names like:

Bob, Jack, Fred, Bill, Ralph etc. That always makes me laugh.

Barney sucks.

Triump
because you're such a great owner
-great owner for him to poop on

StcChief 11-06-2007 12:43 PM

I've been told 2 syllable names are better....

so as not to confuse with 1 word commands

so Barney works or Goldie

FAX 11-06-2007 12:45 PM

How about BigFuzzyBalls? That could work out well in support of the whole "walking him in the park in search of girls" thing.

seriously though, Max, or Maximus, or....Damaticous! :) Or Dam for short. :)

damaticous 11-06-2007 01:14 PM

I named my dog Sadie, but when I first got her she stunk so bad that I kept calling her Stinky. She thought that was her name for the longest time, but I finally got her doing commands using Sadie instead of Stinky now.

tooge 11-06-2007 01:17 PM

I named mine after the coolest place I have ever been flyfishing, the Namakegan river. I named her Kegan. You could use some name from your favorite hobby. (bogie fir a golfer, buck for a deer hunter etc.). Or just find something dear to you, a place, a thing, an event, and come up with a name from that. It gives you a unique connection sort of thingy. Or you could jus tbe mean and name him Stay.

joesomebody 11-06-2007 01:31 PM

2 syllables are better eh? Could be, I had always thought the other way, that a one syllable name would be easier to learn. I had liked the name Truman because I was thinking of a way to tie this dog to Max and I called Max "tiger" a lot. I just don't know, there are some good ideas here though. For AKC registration you have to give them a full name that is unique. Max was Maxwell Dante Holmes.
