Glazer: Priest re-injures neck retiring tomorrow

Is this true?

From PFT

Quote:

HOLMES RE-INJURES HIS NECK

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Chiefs running back Priest Holmes, thrust back into a starting job due to the foot injury suffered by Larry Johnson, reinjured his neck on Sunday against the Colts.

Holmes, per Glazer, has met with a series of specialists, and his career could be over.

Holmes initially suffered the neck injury in 2005, when he was hit by "before" Shawne "roidman" Merriman.
Quote:

updated: PRIEST TO CALL IT QUITS

A league source tells us that Priest Holmes will announce his retirement from the NFL during a Wednesday press conference.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network, citing an unnamed source, has a similar report.

Holmes re-injured his neck on Sunday. The neck originally was injured in 2005, and he was out of football for all of the 2006 season.

The former holder of the single-season touchdown record is signed through 2009. The Chiefs presumably could attempt to recover some bonus money from Holmes, but to do so would be a bad P.R. move.

Didn't he come back into the game?

I think I would have an injury too if I had to keep running in to a brick wall due to pathetic ass predictable as hell playcalling.

From a pure football perspective, it is, but this team doesn't need a stack of RBs. Granted, with no LJ and Priest, they need someone, but I'm fine with going with Kolby f'in Smith because this year is a building block. Bennett doesn't help that.

Only way I'd prefer Bennett than the draft picks is if the draft picks are awful, but they should be half-decent.

Holmes' career may be in jeopardy
Jay Glazer
FOXSports.com, Updated 30 minutes ago

With running back Larry Johnson already on the shelf with a foot injury, the Kansas City Chiefs may have been hit with even worse news.

Running back Priest Holmes may have re-injured his neck in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, FOXSports.com has learned. Holmes returned from a nearly two-year hiatus earlier this season, an absence that was also a result of a neck injury.

According to sources, Holmes was dinged two or three times on Sunday. The last time came in the fourth quarter, which saw him leave the field in a wobbly state after his 20th touch of the game.

As a result, Holmes saw a specialist early this week and will see a series of specialists who can help him better determine his future. In light of the fact Holmes is already returning from a neck injury, this latest scare certainly has to raise questions, not only about this year, but about the future of his career.

In 10 seasons, Holmes has rushed for 8,172 yards on 1,780 carries and 86 touchdowns. He also has 339 receptions for 2,962 yards and eight scores. He scored a then NFL-record 27 touchdowns in 2003.

I wouldnt be shocked if it were true. Supposedly CP told Priest this year to either come back or retire. How hard would it be to come back, say your neck hurts again, and continue collecting your paycheck? I hope thats not true but I wouldnt be surprised.

I wouln't be surprised, on the hit in question where he was hurt, he stiffened up right after he was hit, on the ground, and you saw his hand move up in the air in kind of an involuntary motion. It lookied like the numb feeling he was describing might have come back.

Dammit, I hope this isn't true. I know we were not exactly tearing up the league but I liked seeing 31 back on the field. :shake:

Hydrae 11-20-2007 05:15 PM

I know which play this would be related to and I think Priest freaked out a little bit. The guy wrapped Priest's head in his arm as he tackled Priest. Priest immediately took himself out of the game and was then seen with his helmet off on the sidelines. He did return later in the drive (or maybe it was the next drive, he was out for a little while).

I felt the whole game (this is the only game I have seen since Priest came back) that Priest looked tenative and possibly even scared of getting hit. I do not believe he has any confidence in his body to take a hit or to recover from it afterwards.

L.J. HAS LISFRANC INJURY?

A league source tells us that Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was evaluated by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte on Monday for a mid-foot fracture/sprain known commonly as the Lisfranc injury. The only question was whether or not Johnson would need surgery to repair the condition.

The Lisfranc injury is a fracture and dislocation of the joints in the midfoot, where a cluster of bones come together to form the arch. It was first discovery by French doctor Jacques Lisfranc de Martin, who was a surgeon in Napoleon's army.

Our friends at Rotoworld.com reported on Monday that the Chiefs are expected to "shut down" Johnson for the rest of the season. The team has since declared him to be out for Sunday's game against the Raiders.

The Lisfranc injury has become more common in the NFL over recent years. Most recently, the Colts lost defensive end Dwight Freeney for the year due to the same condition.

Even those two stooges that announced the game were surprised it wasn't a penalty. He was also tackled by the horsecollar at least once, but then we get called for it when it was only a jersey.

Report: Holmes re-injures neck, future unclear

By RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

Priest Holmes
Johnson out for Chiefs-Raiders game
The Chiefs may be operating out of an empty backfield on Sunday.

Literally.

A few hours after declaring running back Larry Johnson out for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, a report emerged Tuesday evening on FOXSports.com that Priest Holmes re-injured his neck during last Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis, and his immediate future, if not his career, could be in jeopardy.

That would leave rookie Kolby Smith, a fifth-round draft choice with 10 carries for 19 yards, as the only running back available unless the Chiefs add a player this week.

The Chiefs were aware of the report, and Coach Herm Edwards said, “Priest got dinged in the game in Indianapolis. He did return to the game before eventually coming out. We’re evaluating him, and we’ll see where it’s at (today).”

Holmes carried 19 times for 55 hard-earned yards last Sunday and gave way during a third-quarter possession to Smith _ the only other running back on the active roster. But Holmes carried twice in the fourth quarter before Smith re-entered the game.

Holmes, 34, suffered a head/neck injury on Oct. 30, 2005 and sat out the rest of that season and all of last season before making a comeback during training camp. He was activated for the Oct. 21 game at Oakland, took over for an injured Johnson against Green Bay and started the last two games.

He has carried 46 times for 137 yards and has caught five passes for 17 yards.

Johnson will miss his third straight game he has missed since injuring the foot in a 33-22 loss to Green Bay on Nov. 4.

MIAdragon 11-20-2007 07:32 PM

Where is Ross when we need him?

Easy 6 11-20-2007 07:34 PM

Unproven though it may be, it wouldnt surprise me one bit.

That tackle he took in the gif. looks just like the fall Michael Irvin took at Philly that ended his career. His head was at a downward angle & slammed into the hard fake turf. It looked very bad.

Anyone accusing Priest of faking something should pull their head outta their ass, it was an awkward & ugly fall directly onto an already fragile neck.

It probably scared the hell outta Priest & i wouldnt blame him at all for questioning his ability to continue.

This IS a game, not life & death.
