Yes, it's one game. Yes, it was against the Raiders. Yes, we lost.

But what I saw from Kolby Smith was running that was far more inspired than anything we've seen out of LJ all year. Remember, LJ was awful in his first few games against not-stellar defenses, but developed out of nowhere to become a fantastic starter.

Kolby Smith has to start before even getting 9 carries in a game and explodes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. The start of his career is officially already better than the start of LJ's career.

Now that LJ has faltered, I think we'll see Kolby eventually establish himself as a legit #1 back. It may take a while, but Kolby is going to be to LJ what LJ was to Priest.

This sounds like jumping the gun to some, and completely moronic to others, but if you had said LJ would be a dominant back after his 10 carry, 21 yard performance against Tampa Bay in 2004, you would have been mocked.

Keep this thread handy in case I need to be mocked or bitterly congratulated later.

Wait, so you told us we'd be pleasantly surprised by Kolby Smith before the game. He then exceeds everybody's wildest expectations in his first start, and since he's now encroaching on LJ's turf, you shoot him down?

The Raiders allow 5 YPC. We averaged 4.9 today.

Without Kolby making his own yards out there, we might have gained 60 yards. Smith is very, very tough. I am eating my crow right now.

Exactly. That's the perfect way to put it: he made his own yards. That's something LJ has done in the past but didn't do at all this season. Kolby displayed pure running ability today. I really think he'll develop into something special.

Of course, look at who's supposed to be doing the developing.

Smith can show he can run the ball and well, now catching, thats another story.

Kolby had a good game. I thought he'd have a good game. He's a talented back. But the offensive line opened some holes out there. Kolby wasn't Barry Sandersing everyone.

I bet the Chargers shut him down. Them having a run defense and all.

Good point. What blows my mind is that Smith was gashing the Faders all day and yet almost no play-action over the top downfield passing. Go figure. And what about the quick hit to Bowe at the LOS? Not once.

That 4th and 1 was the PERFECT opportunity to run play action. I mean, if it turned out they were saving the play fake for such a situation it would have been brilliant. But that's obviously not Herm's thought process.

Yeah, yikes right there. That's something he can (and will be willing to) work on, though

Anybody see if Kolby was any good at blocking? Not that it takes much to beat out LJ in that department.

Smith has very good hands. I think it was just first-game jitters.

Imagine how well he'll run without those jitters.

All of the talk was that he was a north-south, one cut runner, but he made some GREAT jukes & cutbacks today...i really didnt expect him to do some of those things. He also has PHENOMENAL leg drive, yeah it was against a poor run D...but his gritty play & skills should equal production against better D's.

The dropped passes were troubling, but his rep suggests he's got good hands...he may have just been trying to do too much, trying to get upfield before he secured it, i'd bet that improves.

Well, its not like we have a good TE or anything to work off a PA bootleg...

The kid has good instincts, follows his blocks well. That said Oakland makes a different running back look All-Pro every week.

Two words. HUGAR & SPEED.

Smith is hungary, not got the big payday yet, and he is much quicker than LJ. Some of those cuts he made today were just sick.

He looked pretty good again today. Should have had 100 yards but... there's only so much a good player can do on this team.

21 carries for 83 yards. And we pretty much quit on the run in the 4th quarter. Not bad.

yeah I noticed he threw a few nice blocks. I think both he and Grigsby can be pretty good blockers.

He did a real nice job picking up the blitz.

The Herm haters are right about some things, but Smith is yet another example of his draft prowess...he has been OUTstanding in that capacity.

If we can just get a good OC, man...look out, he will put a winner together here.

There's no question the kid runs hard. He still needs to follow his blocks a bit better but he's looked better than LJ behind a crap line.

Before his ankle injury LJ was having a hammy problem and that was from holding out and not being in football shape when the season started. I'm hoping LJ will be back to form after he attends the off season programs, mini camps and training camp. Add that to an improved line and he should rush for 1,500 yards.
