So... how do Browns fans do it?
 

How have they stayed loyal for so many years through truly awful teams with zero direction?

I know it's easy for them to pack the house this year... They've finally got some things going their way, they've played well and they're dark horse playoff contenders.

But they haven't always been like that. They've been bloated financially, confused, left without an offense, left without a defense, and for years dwelled the bottom of the league in ways that would make even the Raiders blushed.

And yet, that stadium is always packed. It's not a city where you say "well what else have they got to root for" because the Indians and the Cavaliers are occasional title contenders in their respective sports. It's a madhouse there, despite the awful weather, bad coaching and worse personnel (until this year). Nothing's gone their way.

They even lost their team for a short while.

How do Browns fans put up with all that, and what can Chiefs fans learn from it?

I'm pretty sure that stadium ISN'T always packed.

Well they lost their team so they realized how much it really means to the community and how bad it would be if they left. That's my theory.

Ergo, they are loyal to their team because, otherwise, they would be hunking up chunks of dirt on Sundays.

Exactly. Imagine if they took the Chiefs, left for 10 years, and came back. You would do anything you could to be sure they never left again.

It doesn't have anything to do with losing the team. That fan base has always been rabid.

The Cleveland area is WAY more populated than the KC area. They have more fools to show up on Sunday, than we have.

I have tried Arrowhead drunk and sober this year....and it still left me unhappy....just with or without hang over. So Alchohol is not Clevelands answer.

There are a ton of us Chiefs fans on here who did the '72 through '89 stretch.

1. It helps to have a broad interest in the NFL, not just the well being of your team. About half way through every season, you are in the "well maybe next year mode". But there is still plenty of football to enjoy.

2. Every 3 or 4 years you get a "season of hope" when they bring in a new head coach. Those seasons are easy time.

3. Then, every 3 or 4 years you get a "season of hope" when they bring in a new QB. The new QB and new coach in the same season is a double edged sword, since your hope is more intense ("They are really shaking things up!") but you get all of your hope allocation in a single season, instead of spreading things out.

4. You have your favorite players. They don't even have to be great. As long as they are slightly better than they rest of the bums.

5. Glory days. When your team is good, beating your rivals gives you a glow for week or two. When you beat your rivals when you are bad, they glow can last for several seasons.

6. Nostalgia. The good old days take on mythical stature when you are Really Bad.

7. The pride of being a True Fan. In the '90s everyone was a Chiefs fan. In the '70s and the '80s it was distinctive to be a Chiefs fan. You were known for your fandom. You were a rare breed. Sitting in a half-empty Arrowhead hoping for your 5th win in 20-degree weather in December marks you as a True Fan for life. No one can take that away. Ever.

8. When it comes down to it, you stay true, because being a Chiefs fan is who you are. You don't have a choice.

You get used to the losing and don't expect much, so when you get a little bit from the team you think it's a lot and are excited again. Most of the fans that go to the game from Cleveland have nothing better to do, people have been leaving Cleveland for a long time, so the economy or "lack thereof" is abismal in Cleveland, hence the not much to do.
