How many people have you fired

I'll bet I've got everyone beat. I don't know the exact number but I know for sure it's well over 200 . Over 20 years in the hog business I've been through a ton of losers. I'm firing 2 today at the end of the workday, they've been going out at lunch smoking pot. This work is way too dangerous for people that are stoned. They could get semen right in their eye or something. And if you've never got the chance to fire someone then how many times have you been fired ? Just wondering.

Bump 01-11-2008 02:25 PM

don't laugh, it was over 10 years ago while I was still in High School (small town, not many good jobs for high school kids). I was an assistant manager at McDonalds there and I probably fired at least 50 ppl. I've never been fired from any job I've ever had. I quit a few without notice and probably can't get rehired (not that I would want to anyways)

Scaga 01-11-2008 02:26 PM

Zero...but I've been on the other end a few times. :banghead:

Al Bundy 01-11-2008 02:28 PM

I have fired about 5 people in my lifetime.. and have been fired one time.

stonedstooge 01-11-2008 02:29 PM

Firing people

I've probably fired around 30 people total, but once had to have a meeting with 18 employees and fire them all at the same time. What a nightmare. Corporation was downsizing and I couldn't sleep for several nights knowing I just rocked 18 people lives at once.

doomy3 01-11-2008 02:30 PM

I've fired probaby 100-125 people

I've never fired anyone.

I've been fired once. And I actually got escorted out of the building by security too. lol

Hog's Gone Fishin 01-11-2008 02:46 PM

I fired a guy once after his second day just because he looked so ****in stupid, I just couldn't take looking at his face.

LMAO now that's a reason, face shields are not optional in your business.

Get some drug testing kits ~$10/ea. Tell any new person you will test for any reason, show 'em the kits.

I've never fired anyone, recommended it on two dorks.

Been fired (let go) twice. Not performance related.

Hell I don't want to have to fire the whole crew. I just don't want them ****ed up AT WORK. You have to become management for that privelige.

I've never been able to figure out if Hog Farmer is a really stupid, intolerant real person or a really humorous, satirical alt of another poster.

I hope it's the latter.

I have fired close to 1000 people give or take a few. LMAO

Hog's Gone Fishin 01-11-2008 03:08 PM

I actually got fired from the first job I ever had. I was a dishwasher at a chinese restaurant, I was 16, I worked nights after school until 11:00. The police station was across the street from the alley behind our restaurant. Me and another guy would slip out back after the sun went down and bombard parked police cars with eggs and potatoes. Every night. We should not have been so consistent. The chinese manager fired me three nights in a row. I kept coming back to work acting like I couldn't understand him. He was STUUUUPID!

You haven't weighed in on the latest fiasco involving regulation of people's thermostats in California. We need a good BD rant over there about now (plus, I'm losing my prediction of how long it would take you to show up and blow a gasket).

I ran health clubs for 20 years. 50 + employees per club average. Fired one a week on average. This doesn't include taking over troubled clubs where I cleaned house or running more than one club. Truth is the number is probably substantially higher. That also doesn't reflect employees since then but that actually hasn't been many.

Gotta love that. Some employee's think they are bigger than the company.

I don't personally fire - my wife does the dirty work. But we had one employee that walked off the job, mid shift with no explanation. 2 weeks later, she called back to see if we were hiring.

I told her yes, but not her.

Only fired a couple. The first one was a long time employee of my dads and he was 50 and I was 25. My old man stood behind me. After a point I got the job of laying people off at the end of every summer. I hated that. It's always "why me and not the other guy?"

That was the toughest! I have fired around 30 over the years, flat out enjoyed some of them. Lazy guys who missed work often and goofed off when they were there were fun to run off. I hated laying off guys when things got slow. Lucky for me I have a job I love and do not have to deal with that crap anymore!

I picture you hard to work for for some reason.

RJ 01-11-2008 06:34 PM

Probably between 75 - 100, most of them when I was in the restaurant business. They were usually teenagers and didn't care about losing their jobs, which of course is why they lost their jobs. It's lots worse firing adults with families, especially when it's not through fault of their own.

I once had to fire a guy who was a real good friend. I fired him at the end of the day, then we went to the bar and got drunk. He thanked me later when he found a new job that he was actually good at.

macdawg 01-11-2008 07:07 PM

fired 2 people, one of them was pretty difficult, the guy was married and just had a kid, was almost overly nice but had quite a bit of sarcasm at the same time, but just awful performance and I suspected he was stealing company goods, so I just started writing him up on anything and everything possible, performance, back 1 minute late from break, etc until I had a third and final, he took a week off for time with his family and when he came back I told him to meet me back in the conference room and he really nicely says 'oh sure' being friendly and I think oh shit he has no clue.........informed him that his performance the week prior warranted a write up and that its time to part ways. Told him to take a seat and I'll explain why this occured since you seem so surprised, he stormed out and said there was nothing to talk about.

I've always been self employed and rarely had help until the satellite business. But nobody gets fired. We are all contractors so when you need rid of someone they just "run out of work". The result is the same but it spares hard feelings.

I once had to fire an employee who I hung out with, played golf with on a pretty regular basis. It was definitely performance related. I had transfered him to a new position within our company at his request, and he simply couldn't handle the new responsibilities. I had already filled his old position so I had nothing for him to fall back on. Needless to say we no longer have the weekend golf game going. To this day I'm very careful about socializing with employees outside the workplace.

Chest Rockwell 01-11-2008 08:37 PM

How many people have you fired

Hog Farmer, I believe that if I was hired by you, I'd be looking for another job as soon as I found out exactly what you did for a living. You wouldn't need to fire me. No offense or anything, I mean spanking my own monkey is fine, but I draw the line at farm animals.

Phobia 01-12-2008 12:39 AM

I've fired a few. I haven't kept track.

Once upon a time I fired the owner of the company. You may recall the situation.

I've been fired twice. Once as a kid. Once as an adult.

Rasputin 01-12-2008 01:10 AM

After having a much better paying job & only working part time at Godfathers pizza I told them I was going to quit after my shift. I got fired anyways and did not work the two hours scheduled. That was years ago and I have moved on to better jobs.

I've been in route sales and delivery for 11 years and going on seven with this uniform company. I've been the lead RSR for most of that time and even won a trip to Cobo San-Lucas last year (My Super Bowl). Everythings been going great but we've gone through some changes within the Co and some really stupid pollicies to deal with. My sales have slipt this year but I know that I can get something going sooner or later no big deal right? We got bought out by a bigger Co and apparently it doesn't matter what youve done for the company in the past they always expect more and add more for us to do but the kicker is not get more $$ to do it. So basically I'm either going to have to bust my ass even more than I do already or find a new job. I have nothing to prove to them cus I've done everything possiable & I'm ready to move on and find something else.

Anyways must be nice to hold a job with out actually having to make numbers or "win" a playoff game for 14 years. :harumph:

jjchieffan 01-12-2008 01:43 AM

I have fired around 15-20 guys when I was running a cable crew. I gave all of them plenty of warning. I even had to fire a guy who was a good friend once. He was consistently 30 minutes or more late to work. Fortunately, he knew that the decision was business and not personal, so it did not affect our friendship.

Only been fired once. I was about 19. Worked in a Tomato packing shed stacking 30 lb boxes of Tomatoes for 12-16 hours a day with no ****ing let up of boxes lol. Friends dad ran the plant and he was my ride. The warehouse was kinda far from where i live, so since my friends dad worked there he thought he could slack. Well after a while he fired us both. lol I was never so happy to be fired. I hated that job. I only kept it becuase he got it for me.

angelo 01-12-2008 09:01 AM

I have never fired anyone, they have always fired themselves.
I just fill out the paperwork and tell them that they no longer have a job.

By the numbers

Had to fire my boss 2 times
Quickest firing 42 minutes (poor attitude)
Most at one time (8 people)
Total over career over 150
Good friends (4)
Girlfriends (3)

I like to get it over quick and not go into detail.
It is never easy and I take no pleasure in it even if that employee is a
cancerous employee.

I have been fired one time for stupid stuff when I was 15. The sting from that embarrassment still lingers.

Rain Man 01-12-2008 01:41 PM

Here's a semi-interesting related story. It wasn't about a firing, but rather a project contract. It happened to me recently, though I'll use WWII names, dates, and tasks to protect identities.

I had a client who was very nice, but very disorganized. We'll call him Roosevelt. The whole organization Roosevelt works for is highly dysfunctional and has a lot of trouble making decisions, which doesn't help. However, it's a well-meaning and generally ethical group. We'll call that organization America.

In March of 1943, Roosevelt called me. America wanted a very large project, which made me nervous since they don't work very efficiently. Their goal was to invade France, and their deadline to complete the project was three months. We were supposed to hit French turf in July of 1943.

11 months after we started, they finally approved the invasion plan after several stops and starts. At times, the plan abruptly changed to an invasion of Crete, or a new rocketry program, or a plan to assassinate Mao Tse Tung. However, it would always eventually come back to invading France.

At that point, it was February of 1944, and I said, "We've got a plan, but it's now or never time. I've got to build and transport the army. That's very expensive. If I move forward with the next step, there's no going back. We have to invade France. Are you signing off to do that?" After another month or two of decision time, Roosevelt said, "Yes. 100% go. Churchill is on board, Stalin is on board, Congress is on board, it's a go."

I confirmed again. "Not 99%? 100%? Because it has to be 100%." (This involved a Ferrari-level expenditure of funds, so I was not playing any games with them.) "Yes," Roosevelt said. "Go. But one thing. Start the invasion on June 6, so we can record it in our new fiscal year."

Deal. So I get everything in place, assemble an army, ship them to England, train them, and run recon flights over Germany in April and May, which I share with Roosevelt. All looks good.

On June 5, 1944, I load the army into the boats and send a quick telegram/e-mail to Roosevelt telling them that the invasion is a go.

On June 6th, as I wave goodbye to the landing ships steaming out of Dover, I get a telegram/e-mail back. It says, "Uh....we decided not to do the project. Go ahead and shut it down."

I send a telegram/e-mail back. "SayWA?"

I get another telegram/e-mail as the ships sail over the horizon. "Yeah, the project is off. Thanks for understanding."

Now...seriously, I have incurred major, major financial commitments by this point. I have the largest army ever assembled chugging across the English Channel.

I send an e-mail back. "Dude, you have already invaded France. We can't stop. If you want me to withdraw, I can do it, but either way, you're paying for an invasion of France."

Roosevelt tells me to just keep my troops in the middle of the Channel, and there are emergency meetings of Congress (the Board of Directors) and the entire Allied command.

Now Congress steps in, and I get called in for a special hearing. "Why are you invading France? You weren't supposed to invade France."

I wave telegrams in front of them. "Roosevelt authorized it. Roosevelt gave me orders. I have a contract. I was given an invasion date. I've been sending recon reports."

At that point, things get weird. I go back to England, and I'm incurring thousands of dollars a day in costs as boats and troops sit off France doing nothing. Tons of money is going up into the atmosphere in diesel fuel and K-rations and comfort women. No one will tell me why Congress wants the invasion canceled, or what's going to happen.

Two days later, I get a call from Congress. "Invade France. Go for it."

I unleash the troops again, but without a whole lot of confidence now. The troops themselves are none too happy, either, since they've been cramped in landing boats for days. But hey, it was the only reasonable decision.

Now, I happen to know somebody who knows somebody who knows one of the Congressmen. I get a call from the Congressman.

"You wanna know what really happened?" he says.

"Yeah."

"Congress told Roosevelt to stop the project in May of 1944. In our meetings this week, he confessed that he forgot to tell you."

Bottom line, then. This client canceled my contract at a point that was a little too late, and where they were going to eat expenses that were the equivalent of maybe a Ford Explorer. They knew that and accepted it. But NOBODY TOLD ME. By the time the project was underway, they were obligated to Ferrari-level expenses. They tried to figure out a way out of it, but had no escape route. I had already incurred the major expenses under my contract, so they quickly decided that they might as well do the project since they were paying for it either way. Bottom line, my client forgot to "fire" me, so I kept the project.

I'm just very fortunate that the company is ethical and well-meaning, despite their dysfunctions. Otherwise, I would've been royally screwed and would've had to spend a lot of money on lawyers.

Stewie 01-12-2008 01:53 PM

I've never been in a supervisory/managerial role, so I've never fired anyone. Where I work one can't manage engineers unless you have a MS or PhD. My boss is a VP (BS ME/MBA) while other engineers report to a PhD. To find the combination of education and people skills in one person is rare. I guess I've been lucky as far as bosses go. Oh, I've never been fired either.

JOhn 01-12-2008 02:27 PM

Lets see, I know I've fired over 20 and probably closer to 30. The majority was when I was the general manager for a local fast food place. Then there were 3 I fired when I was the GM at another local retail store.

As far as being fired, I'm proud to say 2 times I got canned.

JOhn 01-12-2008 02:31 PM

WOW I'm surprised I forgot this one. I fired my best friend, who was my best man at my first marriage. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Lost a very good friend in the process. Since then I've never let myself become friends with anyone whom I have authority over.

I've never had to fire anyone, I've hired a couple people.
I quit one job two weeks in -selling encyclopedias door to door-
Got fired at a radio station along with the rest of the staff when it got bought by a conglommo.
Most jobs I've worked for awhile then went on to something better. Was with one company for 20 years before I took a better paying job two years ago.
