Rams release WR Isaac Bruce, QB Gus Frerotte

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Rams released wide receiver Isaac Bruce, who has been with the franchise for 14 seasons, on Thursday.
Gus Frerotte, the backup quarterback the last two seasons, also was released. The moves came hours before the start of free agency.

Bruce was the last of the Los Angeles Rams, a second-round draft pick in 1994, the year before the move to the Midwest. He's among the NFL career leaders with 942 receptions for 14,109 yards and 84 touchdowns.

Bruce was released after the Rams were unsuccessful in attempts to restructure his contract.

Frerotte, also a 14-year veteran, made three starts when starter Marc Bulger was sidelined by injury and played in nine games overall.

Great player, but I hope we avoid him. He probably wouldn't be willing to come to a scrub team like the Chiefs anyway. I see him going to a contender.

Sure-Oz 02-28-2008 07:23 PM

It's funny they release him but possibly could sign Kennison.

Rausch 02-28-2008 07:25 PM

Bull$#it. He's the perfect 3rd down WR.

Of course, he'll want more than he's worth at this point...

What's even funnier is that Kennison would go back to St. Louis after they released him originally.

Yea, five years ago. Bruce was great, now he's just good. We're rebuilding, signing Bruce would be insane.

We better start adding someone, somewhere that's good 'cause right now we don't have a whole lot of even respectable at a lot of spots.

You have to have SOME experience on your team. Gonzo isn't going to be able to mentor Brodie, our offensive line, and our new CB's...

he could still be good, but we are moving away from air coryell and looking for young players.

Right now we have "Fall Down" Parker and Webb opposite Bowe, and no one else worth noting. Nothing. I'm not saying we need to sign Bruce but we do need to add someone.

We need at least one WR, at least 2 OL, at least one DT, at least 2 CBs, at least one FB, at least one QB, at least one more TE, at least one more HB, and at least one more S.

Short of hitting a home on EVERY signle draft pick and signing every young FA we need I don't see it happening. You still have to fill a roster.

I'm a Memphis homer, but come the hell on the guy is 60 years old.

doomy3 02-28-2008 11:24 PM

This guy is still alive? I would much rather sign some of the younger guys that are available, and really could probably be had cheaper. Bryant Johnson, Jerry Porter, DJ Hackett, Devery Henderson. Guys like that. Johnson and Hackett would be at the top of my list.

Speed is for youth.

I'm with you here, having him at #3 for a couple of years would be great...saying he's washed up & saying he not quite what he once was are two totally different things. He would be a CLUTCH #3.

But of course it'll never happen for the reason you mentioned, he might lower his sights to play for a contender...but not a rebuilder.

Bowser 02-29-2008 10:26 AM

Please. Like Jeff Webb would ever give up #80.

More like ironic as the two look like the same player at this point in their careers; speedsters who have grown fragile and are slowing.

Bruce & Kennison couldnt be more different, Bruce was always about great hands & quick cuts more than he was about top speed.

Eddies best weapon was always speed, when he lost that he was done...that cant be said of Bruce...he still has the hands, great routes & shifty hips to make some team a GREAT #3.

I'd rather have Bruce than Kennison that late in the career just based off career #'s

Bowser 02-29-2008 10:55 AM

Bruce will end up reunited with Mike Martz in San Fran.

FD 02-29-2008 11:00 AM

I see why they cut him but its too bad he couldn't retire a Ram, wouldn't have been more than a year or two anyway.
