Them damn COYOTES!!!!!!!!

This morning my little terrier "Macy" got jumped by 3 coyotes... and these ****ers were huge. I should have been paying more attention as she was acting really sketchy all morning. Barking, looking at me... heading up the hill... turning around making sure I was there. Luckily, my neighbor and I were outside talking and all the sudden Macy took off like a bat outta hell. My neighbor says "Ohhh shit" just enough time for me to turn my head around and see two coyotes surrounding my girl. We both ran up the hill right as a third was coming in for the grab. I think between my neighbor, my black lab that joined us and I they got a little timid, dropped her and took off. She's alive but has a few puncture wounds. Now, In Texas it was easier to hunt these bastards because of all the open land. But, the terrain here is a lot different, hills and trees makes it easier for them to roam without you noticing. My shotgun's loaded with shells and I'm waiting for a few buddies to meet me up here. As for the dogs, my lab is itching to get outside but I'm keeping him in for now and little Macy is at the Animal Hospital getting cleaned up. Sorry for the long story there, I'm just all kinds of pumped right now. I guess I should be counting my blessings that Macy's not dead.

My neighbor was telling me it's gotten really bad these last couple years... people are putting too many damn vineyards in and taking away their roaming areas.. guess they're heading up the hill to find a new home. I was shocked at how big those ****ers were. They don't look like they've been deprived come meal time.

Anything bigger than a .22 LR should work. Just that I’ve seen .22 spread out in their fur and not penetrate past that point.

If'n ya wanna take out a whole pack o' wolves, use that black lab o' yours as bait and have your whole shootin' gang hidin' out nearby.

Get a rabbit squealer....hide and make a rabbit have a painful sounding death. They'll come if they're in the area.

I sure as shit hope not. Ya know, I took her to the vet a few weeks ago cause she was due for some vaccines, rabies included but she was sick and they wouldn't give it to her. Made an appt for tomorrow now that this happened.

Iowanian 03-17-2008 11:41 AM

I'm kidding....

if there are puncture wounds, and you like the dog, it might need a shot, for infection if nothing else. Bring it over and I'll put a few CCs of combiotic or LA200 in it.

Delano 03-17-2008 11:42 AM

That's one of the shitty parts of fragmented ecosystems from sprawl.

Sucks - I've had dogs killed on the road and wanted to track the driver down with a shotgun. One time, I had a mutt that got hit on the highway and he broke his back and a few ribs. He sat in my grandpa's shop under the work bench for a month and recovered. Seems like you can form a hell of a bond with a dog that pulls through something like that.

Hope the lil' yapper recovers.

Calcountry 03-17-2008 11:49 AM

Coyotes have been bad this year. They got one of my goats not too long ago. I think the lack of rain has dampened the number of rabbits, squirrels and such for them to eat so they are getting more aggressive. That, and the fact that KB homes hasn't met an acre of dirt that they didn't like in the valley, and them varmints are hungry.

There is no "fenced" yard, I have one neighbor way down the street and a whole mountain to myself... the dogs roam freely. We're country folks, no subdivisions around here.

Definitely have Macy checked for rabies. A couple of years ago my parents had a skunk come in their porch and start eating some baby kittens. It had rabies and they had to get a bunch of shots.

Get ahold of yourself a semi auto rifle like an SKS or something. But if one of them latches onto fufu, you will want semi auto because you won't line up with the perfect shot.

Well she thinks she's a stud and decided to run up the hill when she spotted them... crazy bitch.

Anyway, they've killed 5 so far and are coming back up tomorrow... he set some traps up (Don't know what their called) but supposedly the coyotes legs get stuck in them and then you just shoot em. Apparently there's a lot more of them then initially thought. Also came across a bobcat and a bunch of wild turkey's today.

Hopefully the hunting/trapping works well. If you continue to see them you might want to consider adding a hound dog or two to your pack. Talk with Mohillbilly if you do add some dogs, he is one of the local experts on the matter. He also would have good advice on pest(big pests in your case!) control.

There's a thread somewhere on hear recently about Raccoons.

Anyway, hope your dog is doing better.

Were it a one on one fight I’d agree, but coyotes don’t roll like that. A dog takes on one, they’re taking on the pack.

Those scruffy things are killing all the deer and wild turkeys... not to mention a threat to domestic animals. I think it's a great idea to put em all out. Upon further thought....YOU should jump in the pack, then we'd be killing two useless scruffy things with one stone! :p

If the coyotes are gone, good luck dealing with the coons, possums, prairie dogs and whatever other smaller wild animals you have there.

BTW, a great novel with a coyote as the centerpiece is Barbara Kingsolver's The Prodigal Summer.

I wouldn't go out of my way to kill any wild life. Now that being said when we had livestock we killed just about everything that would try and eat them. If coyotes attacked my dog, I would definetely try and kill those rascals also. We have coyotes that run through the back of our land, but we dont have any livestock anymore so I wouldn't kill them for nothing. Depending on how many coyotes there were I think my dog could take 2-3 of them by herself, she is a beast.

More deer get hit by cars then killed in the wild. Hunters shoot thousands more turkey than killed by coyotes. As far as domestic animals-the U.S. puts hundreds of thousands to sleep every year-should we shoot the dogcatchers too? Coyotes are very smart and cunning hunters-can't say the same for deer and turkey-which like you, have the brain the size of a pea- :)

You would have loved Austin if given a proper tour. Easily the best and most livable city in Texas. Great nightlife, great outdoor activities and just a great overall atmosphere.

You can always see it next time you move with a boy to texas...
