THE FACTS about Kansas Jayhawks and Their Road to the Championship

I have heard people talk about how easy our road to the Final Four and the Championship was. How UCLA, North Carolina and Memphis had to play better teams. I know these people are haters, and we are the National Champions, but I looked into the truth about our path to greatness, and this is what I discovered.

The teams we beat had an overall record of 175 - 43. I think that is about an %80 winning percenatge. Using espn.com for reference, here are some more facts.

Portland State (23-10)- Big Sky Conference Champions

UNLV (27-8)- Mountain West Tournament Champions

Villanova (22-13)- Finished season ranked #24 in the country (and were a 12 seed)

Davidson (29-7)- The Southern Conference Champs(undefeated in conference) - Finished the season ranked #9 (and were a 10 seed) They beat the West Coast Conference Champs (Gonzaga)in the NCAA Tournament, they beat the Big East Conference Champs (Georgetown)in the NCAA Tournament, and they beat the Big 10 Conference Champs (Wisconsin)in the NCAA Tournament

North Carolina (36-3)- The ACC Conference Champions - Finished the season ranked #3

Memphis (38-2)- Conference USA Champions (undefeated in conference)- Set record for most wins in a season - Finished the season ranked #2.

Out of 6 games, we beat 4 Top 25 teams (3 in the Top Ten) and the other two were a combined 50-18 and were either regular season Conference Champs (Portland State) or post-season Conference Tournament Champs (UNLV.) The only team we played that was not a Conference Champ was Villanova, and they finished the season ranked #24 http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/rankings?poll=2

That is definately not an easy road, and actually looks quite impressive when laid out.

So, in conclusion, ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK:KU:

I'm convinced. The Hawks impressed me but they're very fortunate hyphenated guy choked his free-throws away. That dude is gonna be haunted the rest of his life. No disrespect - the Hawks took advantage of the opportunities but there was a lot of luck involved - as there generally is with any championship.

Congrats again, Hawk fans.

FWIW, I'm a big Hawk fan but the Hawk-eyes weren't in the dance this year. If I ever have any hope of a National Championship I'm gonna have to develop a keen interest in grappling. I don't see that happening though.

It is kinda hard to get behind that. How many Division 1 schools actually participate in that sport. I know that only like 4 in the big 12 do.

Ask frazod.

Your basketball team rocks. They won fair and square. You can't hide in a tournament. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

They didn't take a weekend off while their betters were playing an extra game, then get a bowl game they never earned and didn't deserve handed to them on a silver platter.

You'd think even Kansans could tell the difference.

But maybe not.

You may be right but we are only one of two schools that have won a BCS Bowl and a NCAA basketball championship in the same year.

He did not choke. He performed like he had all year. As a team they performed like they had all year. The Jayhawks were not that great of a free throw shooting team, but in the only game that mattered, they were 14-15 from the line.

Over the last 1:15 Memphis went 1-5. Did each of those misses add points to our score? NO. We went and ripped the trophy out of their hands, they did not just hand it to us.

Yep just like in 03, hawks couldnt make FT's, Syracuse had a ton of luck on thier side, with McNamara hitting ridiclous 3 after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3,after 3 Well you get the point......

Absolutely, I'm not knocking it. All the same, for a school with little basketball tradition, we are thrilled with our two NC's and the promise of future success that comes with Billy Donovan at the helm.

But when the "we're one of only two teams" statements come out, I'm obligated to point out that one accomplishment was a little higher than the other (moreso if you take into account that our bball team went on to win it again). :D

Another interesting factoid that I noticed was that of the 5 players selected as 1st team All Americans KU played against 4 of them in Beasely, Curry, Hansbrough, and Chris Douglas-Roberts. They only missed out on UCLA's Kevin Love, who didn't make it to the Championship. I beleive that KU is the only school in the country to play against at least 4 of them.

I'm sick of college sports athletes
a) Not graduating - wasting the scholorship.

b) Degrees taylored for their lack of quality HS degree (because they just played sports)

c) acting like gangsta' later in life being paid too much and not know how to act in society.

guys who cares who :KU: had to play. i dont. they won... and im not really a :KU: fan (i mostly just dont care for NCAA but im not anti :KU: either) but what i find odd/funny is all the KU fans are feeling the need to justify the championship. whY? in the words of the Beatles... "let it be" enjoy the :toast:s to :KU: victory and lets see what happens next year.

seriosuly though, why worry about the need to justify it?

Dude, I don't need shit from my teams for 5-10 years to still be happy. But, around year 7 I will probably get a bit antsy.

Last year was a very strange year in college football. Most years it works itself out. In the last 10 years there's only been 1 or 2 other incidents and one of them worked itself out in a split championship.

I just don't buy the playoff argument. Have a plus-1, fine. But an 8-team or 12-team or 16-team playoff? No. Most years that would be overkill because there are usually 2-4 teams clearly at the top. I like the fact that EVERY WEEK in college football is a playoff game.

Except that last week, when certain teams play and certain teams get a free pass. And, in the case of the Suckeyes, a free backdoor pass to the National Championship Game that they didn't deserve for a second consecutive year.

Tell me again how this system doesn't suck shit.

Trust me, he didn't have his foot on the line. After them reducing the 3 to a 2 for Memphis earlier in the game, I wouldn't allow myself to get to pumped about Chalmer's shot, until I was sure. I replayed it a few times myself to make sure.

Bearcat 04-10-2008 11:35 AM

Villanova being ranked is a complete joke. They just weren't a very good team this year. After the Sweet 16, however, nobody gets a free ride. Davidson will never get the credit they deserve, even though they came 3 points away from beating the top 3 seeds in their region. Even when they got a little credit, the same experts turned around and picked UNC because after all, KU almost lost to a 10 seed. UNC and Memphis speak for themselves.

I haven't seen a pic, but I've seen the play many many times and it was a 3. I love everything about it... Collins' move at halfcourt, the fumble and dish to Chalmers, and then the instant reaction of the Jayhawks to play defense after the shot instead of any sort of celebrating. The only thing missing is that I haven't seen an angle that shows Chalmers' reaction to his own shot. I was wondering if the pic on the front page of ESPN Monday night was his reaction.

I have seen a lot of teams celebrate a shot like that, but it was almost like the Jayhawk players expected it to go in. It makes me think back to Bill's speech before the UNC game, where he told the players to expect good things to happen and they would.

Also, as the shot is in the air, it appears that Mario goes into his patented back pedal. He said over and over that he knew it was good the moment it left his fingers.

I know that, you know that, the Kansas Jayhawks and Memphis Tigers know that. Hell, pretty much the whole country knows that. But there is this poster (goes by the handle Hawk Hater) on another bb that I have been on for years who actually suggested that. He is also hanging onto the fact that KU supposedly had the easiest road ever to the Final Four by playing all those lower seeds.

His latest deal is suggesting that the game was fixed. :doh!:

He is also hanging onto the fact that KU supposedly had the easiest road ever to the Final Four by playing all those lower seeds.

His latest deal is suggesting that the game was fixed. :doh!:

I hope you shared my OP with him.

Bob Dole spent almost 45 seconds of his valuable time creating that one. If it's not good enough, too bad.

Of that, I have no doubt. I have told him that many times over the years (been on that bb for about 7 years or so). Still, I like to rub the facts in his face. :D

Thanks. Since I am out of work, I had some time on my hands, and if the info helps anyone, I am glad.

Doesn't he seem like he has probably wacked a few people in his day? Or at least duct taped them and stuffed them in a trunk.

I don't really see how anyone can disagree with the fact that KU had some cards fall their way a little bit. Sometimes the best team doesn't win. I don't think Davidson would have finished anywhere in the top 5-6 in the Big East. I think Gtown would have presented a tougher matchup for KU. Same being said for Wisc. But hey they couldn't win the games they were supposed to and they got knocked out.

Now if KU played like they did in the Final 4 they would have easily gone undefeated. They played their best bball when they had to, which is the most important.

I just want to thank Sasha Kaun.. without him no championship for KU.

One of the greatest, underrated jayhawks.

I am always amazed at how fast he can run the court, and how well he moves his feet. And he catches everything thrown at him. I would love to see him go to a team like Phoenix.

this also wouldn't have been the path we would have taken if we didn't beat Texas in the Big 12 Championship in order for us to get the #1 seed

I still can't find the student athlete portion of the post game press conference for KU. I have heard the entire press conference for Memphis, and I have heard the Bill Self portion of the post game press conference, but can't find the players.

Does anyone have a link? Please?
