College Students
So, classes started today here at nwosu. What kind of classes are the college students on here enrolled in? How many hours you taking? How long are you on campus for them?
I'm enrolled in 16 going M,W,F 8-12 with a 3 hr night class and a 2 hour thursday lab. I have General Biology and lab, Middle Ages, American Colonial Period, Police Trafficing and Enforcement, and a 3 hour general humanities class. Don't know anything about humanities, is it a type of art history class? The book for it is 180 bucks. Everything else was a lot cheaper. My sister spent well over 700 on her books. |
Accounting II and Systems Analysis and Design II w/ a fulltime job
Wish i could take more |
6 hours, both online-only. Business Math and Human Relations in Business.
|
I typically averaged 13-14 credit hours but they were mostly all Engineering courses. Tried to have T/R free if possible.
Books generally cost between $300-500 per semester but it was covered by the wonderful lottery players of the state of Florida. :D Once I was in grad school and had to pay it myself I'd buy the books in paperback for cheap from china. |

I'm intrigued by the General Biology and Lab in the Middle Ages course. Do you experiment with whether witches float?

What is your major? History i assume? |
I just got home from buying books, and was going to start a rant thread about the cost....looks like I don't have it nearly as bad as some of you. $509 for 5 books.
I'm still working on core classes, and am taking 15 credit hours - MFW from 8am-11am, then a 1 hour break, then classes from Noon-2pm. Completely off on Tuesday/Thursday. I took all my "fun" classes early, which is becoming quite the PITA now - stuck with a math class, Art Appreciation, Sociology, Astronomy and a Logic course. Neither of the 2 EDU classes I needed were offered this semester - that kinda screwed me as well. I'm dropping down to part-time work while I'm in class, and am applying for an internship with one of the local professional sports franchises this week - my wife has a good friend on the inside - hope it helps - I'd kill to get my foot in the door. I actually need to start a thread on creating a kick ass cover letter....I've been lucky enough to not have to do it recently. Any suggestions before I crank out a new thread? |
I typically don't require books for many of my courses.

I remember spending up to $200 the most in the early 90's for books, wow they have really shot up in price.
|
Public Finance
Money and Banking American Foreign Policy Art History Two more semesters and a few more Economic classes and I'm fucking done son. Cannot wait. And I haven't bought a book in like 5 semesters. Most profs do everything off of powerpoint, and the book is just a study tool, and while helpful, isn't necessary. |

I save hundreds and hundreds of dollars by utilizing MOBIUS, MO's collegiate inter-library loan system. I just check out the majority of textbooks and supplemental books. |

So far:
Junior-Senior History Seminar: Exploring the West Elementary Logic Intro to Economics Classical Political Theory Campaigns, Communication, and the Media I also want to take Constitutional Law, but I don't think I'm signed up for it. If I get into that, I'd drop probably Campaigns, Communication, and the Media. I also want to take Classical Civilization, but I'm definitely not signed up for it. If I get into that, I'd probably drop Intro to Economics or the Seminar. |

I had one semester that pushed me to the brink. I student-taught a developmental English class, had a prof that had us read Dickinson to no end, and I realized I was only 1/4 done with the foreign language requirement of my degree. Then I quit. |
My preference was the Tues/Thurs schedule. I had to go 'till 6pm but hey...

I worked with this moron who supposedly had a Masters in history and was still working at a sporting goods store "she liked working cash registers". |
Last year of my MBA program, and I'm pretty much on cruise control at this point as I'm only taking two classes this mod - Leadership and Law & Finance of M&A.
I only have one book, but we also have classpaks that are basically $50 each for 20 photocopied pages, and you can't resell them. |

I'm working on a marketing minor to go along with my sports management degree. Got 9 hours plus working full time (which that job might be changing hopefully to one that is a little more flexiable for me). Just dropped 400 on books.

I am in graduate school at the pharmacy program at UMKC. Not alone do I have to pay those "lovely" graduate tuition fees ( $9,500 a semester and I'm a Kansas City resident), but also my books seem to be insane as well like the rest of you guys ( Just my Pharmacy Phisiology, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutics books combined ran me $425).
What I laugh about is when individuals make it sound like schools are "non profit". |

Yeah, out-of-state tuition here at IU Law is 37K per year. I would've stayed at Kansas for law school if I didn't get a full-tuition scholarship.
I took a class over the summer so I'm only in 12 hours this semester. I'm pretty stoked about it. |

If you buy your textbooks at the U Bookstore go early and get used if you can. Otherwise check out this link, I've gotten some awesome deals on it. I'm in 17 hrs. right now. Realized that a history degree wasn't leading me where I wanted to go, so I'm Business/Marketing right now and working on a double in Interpersonal Communications. Also, usually work around 30-40 hours a week so I'm a decently busy guy. |
I'm a senior this year at NWMSU. I just finished up an internship with Metro Sports in Kansas City, and I absolutely loved it. I'll be doing more stuff for them throughout the year. My major is sports broadcasting, obviously, and I'm minoring in visual journalism. I strive to be an anchor.
The first day of classes is Monday, August 25 for us. I'm enrolled in 14 hours, MTWThrF classes. The only class worthy of noting is my Theories of Mass Communications class because it has a 30% pass rate, basically meaning most of the people in the class are taking it for the second time sadly. I'm going to eat, sleep and bathe with that class, and remember proudly that D's get degrees, at least with this class in mind. My spring semester will be cake with me only needing seven legit hours, the rest will be filled with one hour recreation courses such as volleyball, tennis, racquetball and insert any other pud class. This year won't be that easy but I intend on having much more fun than I usually do, since it is my LAST year of college. I started the school year off right last night by fooling around with and getting a bj from this chick I barely know. Nothing new for me as I am a whore, but my mind is now refreshed and ready for a full year of fun whilst meeting and studying new student bodies of the female variety, mixed with furthering my knowledge of my soon-to-be profession. It's all about multi-tasking. I want all the underclassmen to know one thing: The only B's worth getting are BJs. Good luck this year with your studies and extra curricular activities and may you excel at everything you do. |

This thread makes me wish I hadn't been a ****ing reerun the first time around.... At least I finally came to the realization that it's never too late. |
Chemical Engineering...
Senior Process Design, Math Methods, Kinetics, and an online Engineering Management Economics class.. then I'll take about 5 credits of research... so I won't have much football time.... this sucks. Why can't I just find a job which requires me to just sit at home??? I should have been a programmer.... |
I'm taking the final class I need to graduate and I have a bunch of newspaper stuff. The big thing is figuring out where I'm going to go after graduation. I have some ideas but nothing is set in stone.
|
This thread brings back memories. Nightmares actually. I hated college. One trick I used to avoid buying textbooks was checking to see if the library had a copy. If they did, I didn't buy it. Some of those prick profs would change the textbook frequently so that there were no used ones. Sharing one with a buddy worked sometimes also.

My girlfriend is going back to school to get her Masters in Business Ed. I went up to the bookstore the other day to get a list of the books she needs and for Christ sakes those things have gone through the roof!
The last time I had to buy college texts (2001) the MOST expensive book I ever bought was a brand new Organismal Physiology text with lab manual and that was $90. The most I ever spent on texts in a semester was just over $500. Some of the books I saw the other day were close to $200 alone! I can't imagine what a biology major pays for books every semester. Unreal, I don't know how you all afford it nowadays. |

Sweetness, I found my General Humanities book on amazon for 75 instead of the 160 at the bookstore. I have five classes, four of them are ITV (classes on the t.v. because there are four campuses). I hate those classes, luckily all but one has my professor in the class and not on another campus. |
I'm teaching Water and Waste Transport, a required senior level course in our department. I'm also coordinating a 1-hr review course for the Fundamentals of Enginnering exam. I'd normally teach another course, but I have a new position that has a lot of administrative responsibilities. On top of that I have my research load. I've been home long enough to wash down two bean burritos from Taco Bell. I'll be putting in 12 to 14 hour days over the next 2 to 3 weeks. Hopefully it will calm down a little bit after that.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't go to college except for learning a specific trade or as a tool to get into a professional school (lawyers, doctors, etc.) I'd either join the service and let them teach me the job of my choice (while paying me) or try to start my own business. College really sucks and it's not for everyone.

Everybody who is still in college. I hate you all. You cocky sons of bitches living up the dream. Just wait until you have to work 40 hours a week the rest of your life. Life is over in a few years, don't turn to alcoholism, depression and midget prostitutes like I did to cope.

And picking a major is tricky. What is hot right now may be crap when you finally get your degree. In the'60's everybody wanted to be an aerospace engineer because of the govt space programs. When they ended, there was no more work. I think Rainman got caught up in this. So you need a crystal ball to know what will be hot when you are 50. You need to know this when you are 20. Some professions last forever like doctors, lawyers and veterenarians. So be aware of that.
