New A/C unit with Crane Pics
Hey Guys,
Unfortunately, our A/C unit went out this weekend. It was 15 years old and probably due. Anyway, since our home is 45 foot tall, a crane was needed to removed the old unit and replace it with a new unit. Since I thought it was pretty cool to see, I've attached a few pics for those interested. Enjoy! |

how much did you have to pay to live there in the projects?

I bet that new one blasts out some serious wind chill.
Is that your house, or do you live in a condo? |

It's a great neighborhood! |
Nice place Dane. Out of curiosty, How many square feet is that?
Would that be considered a townhome? |
Cool!

Maybe I'll just write a check, if they'll hold it until next Friday. If that is you at the bottom of the hill, I guarantee you we'll have some good barbaeques. Hell, I might just invite Tiny over, as well. |
I want to come visit.

No, it's a single family home. It's four stories so it looks like a condo or townhome. Since there's no basement, the home is approximately 3,500 square feet. It feels bigger though because the foyer reaches to the top floor. Each one of the front balconies has an associated room (Family room, Entertainment Room on the 2nd floor and two bedrooms on the top floor). |

The people in the pics are the A/C guys. I'm taking pictures from across the street. |
That's a sweet looking house man. How can you afford that with your sweet bike payment?

Once a Dane, always a Dane. Nice digs.

When I was working in Property Management in Las Vegas, I noticed alot of Residential A/C and Apts units on the roofs an don't understand why? Any explainations?

Our ducts are exposed as well and finally (after five years of living here), I hired a competent company who painted the ducts with reflective paint and re-sealed them (they have to be re-sealed every two years due to constant exposure. Terrible design). I didn't even know they made reflective paint. The result? Lower A/C costs (because the ducts are on fire all day). |

btw--nice house. |
It really is a nice place. Congratulations on your success. I know you worked hard for it and you have every right to be proud.

I thought SoCal residents didnt need AC Dane??

If you live near the coasts, you generally don't need A/C. But I'm 7 miles inland in a little canyon, so we don't get much ocean breeze. We usually only run the A/C a few months out of the year and with a four story home, it's pretty essential during heat waves. |
When you gonna invite us over to experience the new AC ?

I hope you guys enjoy the pics. Being from Kansas, I could have never imagined that you'd need a crane to replace an A/C unit, so I thought I'd share. |
Thanks for the pics Dane. Thanks for a sharing a bit of your life with us.
So our building codes pretty stringent with making buildings on side of hills have a lot of concrete foundation type supports before they can build there these days? |
What part of Kansas did you live in Dane?
|
Great thread.
|
It would seem more practical to put the AC unit on the ground with a building that tall. That crane had to have cost a ton of money. But now that the lines all run to the roof I guess you had no choice. With the larger dishes I do now, many of them are on the roof. I move them to the ground when I can.

Here's my new A/C unit. We're very proud.

Last time I saw that your commode was on the front porch. Did you finally get indoor plumbing?
|
Fill in the blanks:
Q: What do Dane's A/C and _____'s _____ have in common? A: You need a _______ to get either one of them ____! |

The houses behind us are all concrete and steel. They don't use wood beams or glue lam beams, they actually use steel girders to frame the house, just like those used for high rise buildings. Here's a few before and after shots, just to give an idea of how the foundations were laid. |
For the cost of the crane, couldn't you have just hired a bunch of illegals to wave palm fronds?

Thanks! |
Great looking place, man. No question.
I'll be honest, though. My first thought was, "Whoa, that looks like a lot of stairs." Clearly I'm getting old. :shake: |
Quote:
After 5 years of four flights of stairs, we're pretty much over it. The problem is that there aren't really any ranch style homes in Los Angeles that would be suitable for us. So even when the day comes that we sell and move (and that will probably happen in the next 2 years for various reasons), we'll more than likely end up in at least a 2 story home. But four? Never again. |
Call me unhealthy, but I think seeing this would have been just as good.

You're right, however. The topography of the land doesn't lend itself to a lot of options in single-level living. Would it be correct to assume that a ranch-style house would be even more costly than what are already very expensive multi-level homes? |
Knowing Dane like I do I say he adds 4 more floors and an elevator to his home in December.
|
Quote:
Multi-level homes with those specs can be found for considerably less, depending how near the ocean the home is located (Santa Monica, Malibu and the Pacific Palisades are among the most expensive in all of Los Angeles and tend to be double the amount per square foot than place like Hollywood). |

No man, we are done. Done, done, done. We are so done that we are beginning to look for another home. We really need a yard for the poochies and especially for our newborn. The flagstone patio, while beautiful, is no longer cutting it. |

Cool pictures. This is defineately post worthy. And to think, I used to drive by construction sites where there were cranes without stopping to appreciate their coolness.
I guess the only thing cooler would be to post pix of the blimp during the Oscars. You know we are huge Oscars fans around here. |

Actually, I needed a crane to help me handle my morning wood the other day. But damn, if I didn't take pics.
Woulda been some good learning for teh Planetoids. |
