Huard says losing streak taking toll on KC

By DOUG TUCKER, AP Sports Writer 4 hours, 43 minutes ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Kansas City’s 12-game losing streak “is taking a toll on everybody,” says the weary-looking quarterback who’ll try to end the slide this week.

“It gets old. It’s tough,” said Damon Huard. “All we need is one win. You start with one.”

For the second time in three games, Huard will start at quarterback for the winless Chiefs on Sunday against the high-scoring Denver Broncos (3-0).

A career backup who’s had both good games and bad in a well-traveled 12-year career, Huard was benched last week while Tyler Thigpen got his first NFL start against Atlanta. But after throwing three interceptions in a lopsided loss, Thigpen goes back to the bench and Huard gets elevated once again.

In the meantime, regular starter Brodie Croyle is not expected to return from an opening-day shoulder injury until mid-October and Huard admits he’s never been involved in such an unsettled signal-caller environment.

“But when you’ve lost as many games in a row as we have, you’ve got to do that, you’ve got to make those sort of moves and try to figure a way to win a game,” he said. “I haven’t been on a losing streak like this at any level of sports.

“You’re trying to do whatever you can, turn over every stone to try to win a football game.”

Making prospects even worse for KC, two of the few veterans on the rookie-laden roster will be sidelined with injury. Coach Herm Edwards said linebacker Donnie Edwards would be out with an ankle problem and replaced by Demorrio Williams.

Cornerback Pat Surtain will miss a second straight start with a shoulder injury, meaning the Chiefs will start two rookie cornerbacks against a Denver offense averaging 38 points and more than 430 yards.

The Chiefs, who haven’t won a regular-season game since Oct. 21, 2007, have been scoring only 10.7 points a game.

Huard said the Chiefs will not be “amped-up” because the Broncos are an AFC West division rival.

“It’s amped-up because we’ve lost 12 games in a row. We need to go out and find a way to win this ballgame,” he said. “The working environment would certainly be a lot better.”

After starting on Sept. 14 against Oakland, Huard sustained a neck injury and had to come out. He declined to answer when asked specifically if he was 100 percent healthy.

“Everybody as the season rolls on gets a little nicked up,” he said. “I’ll be all right.”

Thigpen said he’ll be standing by, ready to come in.

“I’m still preparing myself to play because any time you’re the backup, you never know what might happen,” he said. “I definitely feel good about getting some experience out there. There are some things I could have done better. But those are things you learn from and you move on.”

He ought to know, he has quit on this team once, if not twice already....

Neither he or is wobble chucker have helped this team in any way...

Buehler445 09-25-2008 10:00 PM

What, no questions about the effect of his "neck injury" on his ability to assume the fetal?

KCCHIEFS27 09-25-2008 11:05 PM

oh boy..two rookie cornerbacks against brandon marshall..cromartie couldn't even contain the guy..

Doesn't matter their getting battle tested and their holding their own for the most part. I'm pretty happy with both of them.

btlook1 09-26-2008 12:31 AM

You are correct cromartie got toasted by the Donkeys. I hope they put Flowers on Marshal and nail him every chance they get! But I have a bad feeling about this game. Denver is going to try and lay it on us...

i wouldn't call giving up 119 yards to roddy white "holding their own."

I should have started Roddy White on my fantasy team if I knew he would look like Jerry Rice against the Chiefs.

Fax he didn't say anything but the truth.

I am anxiously waiting some of the veterans to start speaking out against Herm and this organization if they keep losing. The sooner Herm and Carl are gone the better this team will be.

It's ok. Our pass rush should help them out.

Wait a minute....

Yea well.....I got Cutler Marshall and Scheffler.

Chiefs Pantalones 09-26-2008 08:10 AM

It's gonna get ugly on Sunday.

We'll score more points than we have all year, but we'll still get beat by 14 at least.

I think you're being nice.....even though their D is bad I think our O might be worse.

Sure-Oz 09-26-2008 08:13 AM

I had my GF pickup Marshall, Cutler and the Denver defense in her league (where its a buy any player league using a cap) I expect domination

Brock 09-26-2008 08:15 AM

Watching Huard will take its toll on me. That's why I'm not going to do it.

Yep. That's how you get better.

CoMoChief 09-26-2008 08:20 AM

It's clear to say that Herm has lost his players and this team.

I'm starting to believe that players are losing faith in what he's trying to do.

When you go on losing streaks like this......you really have to start thinking about the Chiefs FO and whether they think Herm is the right guy for the job.

There's no excuse for losing 12 straight games.

Bwana 09-26-2008 08:21 AM

As long as it "takes a toll" on Management and the coaching staff when it's all said and done, it will be worth it. Hey Clark, Delta is having a buy one, get one free deal on airline tickets.

Mecca 09-26-2008 08:22 AM

Watching Huard is literally like watching death pass by.

That is true. Even though their D isn't that good, they are not a bad football team overall.

HERM HAS LOST THIS ****ING TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Red Brooklyn 09-26-2008 09:28 AM

Yes he has lost the team. But maybe that's what the 'youth movement' is really about. He wants to bring in people who don't know enough to recognize how full of poo he is. :D

Saulbadguy 09-26-2008 09:34 AM

I hope the Broncos break Huard.

The Rams don't have near the losing streak KC has and look at this from Rotoworld today....

Sources tell the St. Louis Post Dispatch that QB Marc Bulger no longer wants to play for coach Scott Linehan.

Running back Steven Jackson blasted Linehan's decision to bench Bulger, calling it the "wrong decision" and saying that other players are unhappy with the decision as well. Bulger is likely to start again this season, but it may not happen until Linehan is canned.

DownField BigQuitter has contributed just as much or more than any other QB on this roster...

At least the young guys try.. More than you can say about DownField BigQuitter...

StcChief 09-26-2008 12:26 PM

Huard done by 1/2 time.

I can squat on what you're sellin', Mr. dirk digler, peep. And, to be honest, I'm all for some turmoil, disarry, insubordination, and even a little dissent in the ranks if it means Herm's tenure might be shortened by even a day. Still, it kind of bothers me when the quarterback expresses this kind of malaise and angst after three games. Quarterbacks are supposed to be upbeat and keep the team together with their positive outlook and commanding authority and confident aura and stuff. I guess that's hard to do when you're curled up in a little ball on the ground, though.

Yeah, but it's not 3 games it's 12. Dude's just being honest...I find it refreshing and even admirable.

Having said that, Huard sucks.
