Archery Season in KS opened 9/22; anyone been out? Any success stories? I am going out for the first time Sat. See if I can't stick an arrow in a doe while I am waiting for the rut. Supposed to be pretty warm this weekend, which will suck but I am getting the fever.

I've got some stands up, a couple of trail cams out....and 3 stands in the back of my truck I wish I'd had up a month ago.

This reminds me of something I read about I was going to put in the hunting thread.

Ever hear of "jigging for deer".....basically a 2-3' stick, with a short handle screwed in that looks like a night stick of a cop. Hoist it down by a green twine and plink it around in the brush and leaves to simulate deer steps to help with your grunts, bleets and rattling realism?

I'm thinking I'm going to try one out this year.

I won't be able to get out for archery season this year, but I do have my trail cams out on the property my dad and I purchased earlier this year.

Can't say I have heard of "jigging for deer". Is it supposed to be a pre-rut or rut tactic, or is it effective anytime?

got the bow out and have been shooting each night after i get home. i'll go out this weekend, but will prolly spend more time cleaning brush around the stands and blinds than actually hunting.
just being out in the woods is great.

I’d assume he’s talking rut, since the grunting and rattling sounds are to simulate a couple of bucks fighting.

got two stands up. I refuse to go out until there is a fairly decent frost, so I may sit and stew for another couple of weeks. Been seeing quite a few at my place though. More than one or 2 chigger and tick bites and those buzzing bugs by my facemask are not worth it for me.

Jigging for deer was in an article in this month's "bow hunter" not the superior "pedersons Bow Hunting". I accidently ordered the wrong magazine last year from a local HS kid....

Anyway, its a good article. Maybe I'll have time to scan that page or something.

Its like I said....Its made from a heavy stick(1-2" wide) about 2-3' long with a short stick towards one end, so It will look like a night stick. You wrap that with the green twine, like your bow rope.

It is to mimmic the sounds of deer walking. You lower it down, drop it into leaves and sticks and it makes noise when the first end hits, and the 2nd two when the other end falls. You can russle brush when you're bleeting or grunting, or rattling....russle leaves, bang it on brush....whatever. It should also work early in conjunction with bleets....a walking deer-sound.

I'd never heard of it either, but it makes a lot of sense....

It says it'll only really work on calm days...but if you think about it, when a doe walks through, a lot of times, its followed by other deer from other directions investigating.

It also says not to do it when you can see the deer....they'll pinpoint the sound, and I agree that would happen.

I think it will work pre-rut and during the rut.

I'm going to try it this year for sure. Worst that happens is it scares off deer I don't know are there anyway, and I don't see why it would.

My neighbors have taken two does .. Said they shot at two nice bucks but missed .. Black-powder .. I saw a decent buck yesterday.. Looked like a ten-pointer but not for sure it was about 200 yards away ....

I'm kind of worried about hunting this year, big acorn crop this year. I hunt food plots not the best for me.

The acorns are down early this year. There is a bumper crop of hickory nuts and acorns this year, but by November...not a hindrance.

You can always you know....throw up a stand in an oak grove.

I think that deer have poor hearing. On at least 3 seperate occasions I have only shot my rifle twice during the entire year. The first time was missing the deer, and the 2nd time was shooting the deer as he did the Scoobie Do run trying to figure out which way the shot came from so he can run in the opposite direction. Three seasons ago I shot a buck and dropped him, then turned and shot the doe he was following because she was standing there trying to figure out WTF was going in.

I hunt on a 12' deer stand in pretty thick woods, so maybe the echos screw with them. I smoke and drink coffee in my stand, and after a night of beans and beer at deer camp, I usually let loose with plenty of raunch biscuits. Granted I am not bow hunting, but nearly all of the shots I make are at 30 yards, which most bow hunters can hit.

Uhh.. No. Dear have very sharp hearing. Much much better than yours. Your situation was likely caused by the deer being confused and scared.

Deer have outstanding hearing. I've had them hear my jacket rub bark on a tree as I moved . I had a buck 20 yards away bolt last year when my arrow tinked lightly on the stand as I stood up to draw.

They can tell within a very precise where a bleet or grunt or crunching leaf comes from from further away than you'd think. Hell, light sounds are half of their communication.

As for the cars....their eyes are built to see at night and they don't see really in color. Lights from a car blind them...thats why they react silly at night or stand still.

I plan on going to gods country up on the Loess Hills of Iowa for a weekend in the beginning of November. My dad has a huge spread up there full of Pope and Young deer. I haven't shot one in about four years. I need to get into it like I did when I was younger but it's so damn time consuming.

So that doesn't explain during like afternoon they will stand on 435 going north then all the sudden run out. Plain daylight. Oh well.

A friend of mines father guided a muzzle loader hunt and got this beast on opening day. Rough score was 211. Sorry for the bad quality, cheap cell phone pics. The guy holding the rack is about 5'10 and 165lbs just to help gauge how big the thing really is.

**** hair is all i need. i dont hunt much anymore. have a fella harvest off my place.
he built a bygod of a tree stand. sits about 150 yards from my back door.
anyway his first year hes out with his daughter and im drinking in the yard, about an hour into his hunt i hear him cock the hammer on his 30/30. now mind you this is a scoped rifle. he shoots and about 20-30 seconds later he fires his weapon again.

so i watch till he climbs outta the stand, head to the shop to get my tractor so we can haul it back. when i get down there i see why it took two. one through the ass and one through the gut.
same fella killed a button buck, called it in, and the next day MDC was at his door bright and early. seems it was antlerles season.

Been in the trees a couple times; no luck yet, had a fat doe walk right under my stand Sat. evening but never walked in my shooting lane.

Mostly just ate up by skeeters.

Early firearms opens Sat. for unit 19; go sit in the blind in the cornfield and drop a couple does this weekend.

Bought my 13 year old son his first deer rifle tonight; a .270. He has been hunting for years and killed several deer, but he wanted his own gun for Christmas. He is one happy kid.

Well downed a fat doe last night in the early rifle season. Was quickly running out of day light and actually could not see the deer unless I was looking throught the scope, it was so dark. She was about 200 yards eating in a cut corn field, she was shadowed by some tall grass. I waited for her to take a few steps into the field so I could get a better view through the scope. Gave her a whistle so she stood up nice and tall and sent my .270 cartridge right through both lungs, she walked about 40 yards and I found her in a dry creek bed.

That is my success story of the weekend.

Fri. night I was bow hunting out of a ground blind along a bean field, been there a few times this year and have seen alot of deer, just no chance for a shot. Right about 7:20 a nice doe came within 22 yards of me, I actually had to grunt her to stop otherwise I think she was going to walk right into my blind. She turned broadside I let my arrow go and made a solid hit, I knew I was a little high but was sure I just made my first bow kill. She turned and trotted into the timber. I took my time, packed my stuff up and went to the area she was when I shot her. Found alot of good blood, followed it to the edge of the timber where she entered and saw sprays of blood all over the tall grass and on the ground. Seeing this I figured she was not very far in the timber and not wanting to pressure her packed my blind and bow back to my vehicle and waited for my buddy to arrive to help in tracking. He got there about an hour later which gave the doe a good hour and a half without pressure. We quickly picked up the trail, easy to follow, big drops of blood and alot of "sprays". After about 125 yards found my arrow covered in blood on the bottom half and the fletchings dripping blood. Figured it would not be long before we found her.

Well long story short we tracked the blood trail for 3 1/2 hours through all kinds of cover; briar, thickets, tall grass and even over a creek she crossed. We followed the blood until we got into a tall briar patch and lost it. We searched the area for over an hour looking for any sign, nothing. Finally after midnight and our flashlights completely dead we had no choice but to call it off. We had to bushwhack our way out of the woods (which we had no idea where we were exactly) by moonlight. I am amazed on the amount of blood this deer lost and we could not find her. We estimated we covered over a mile and a half of ground searching for her. I was dissapointed not only because it would have been my first bow kill but that it was too warm that night to even fathom that she could survive the night without spoiling. Not the first deer I have lost but still bothersome none the less. I guess the doe on Sun. night somewhat makes up for it, that and the idea that some coyotes had a tasty meal Fri. night and Sat. :shrug:

Hopefully I will get back out a couple times this week during the early season and definitely will be out this next weekend. Trying to decide to bow hunt or rifle?
