LAWRENCE | Kansas coach Mark Mangino will make a personal plea to the KU students, encouraging them not to continue with the profane pre-kickoff chant at the Jayhawks’ home games, KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said.

The chant — based on a line from the 1998 Adam Sandler comedy “The Waterboy” — states, “Rip his (expletive) head off,” referring to the opposing team’s kickoff return man.

KU will send a video of Mangino speaking to the student body over e-mail on Thursday, and the video will be replayed before the game on Saturday.

This latest attempt to stop the chant began last Friday when University Daily Kansan editor Matt Erickson called a meeting that included Marchiony, Director of University Relations Todd Cohen, student body President Adam McGonigle and KU linebacker Mike Rivera.

There was an article in the student newspaper a few days ago urging students to stop.

It may be a little less loud but it's college students. Some will respect the wishes but the others will just continue to do it simply because of the fuss they're making.

Let's think about this. When you were that age, and someone told you not to do something, what was the first thing you did?

Up yours. I take two daughters, age 11 & 10, and a son, age 7, to every home game. Foul language is unnecessary at events that are billed as family entertainment. I chhos to sit in the "Family Zone", and I've jumped teenagers and college students for using foul language in that part of the stadium. When I hear the cheer, I yell, "Rip his bloody head off" so my kids can't discern what the idiots in the student section are really yelling.

Let's not pretend that kids will always be innocent and by protecting them from this chant on saturdays - that they probably can't make out unless they're right next to it or know what they're saying before - is going to keep them innocent for their whole lifetime.

Call me what you will, but that statement, combined with the terms "Family Zone" ought to create an expectation of a family, i.e. Rated "G" or "PG" environment.
