Chiefs to keep Gonzalez, other vets
By Jason Cole
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson gave every indication that his team will not be making a deal in the final hours before the NFL trade deadline of 4 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

"No, nada, nothing, zero," Peterson said, from the fall owners meetings, when asked if he had any possible deals for some of his high-priced veterans. TE Tony Gonzalez, RB Larry Johnson and CB Patrick Surtain have all been rumored to be on the trading block for the Chiefs, who are in rebuilding mode.

Several teams have expressed interest in Gonzalez, including the Bills, Giants and Eagles, according to published reports. However, none may be willing to meet Peterson's price tag of a third-round draft pick.

Peterson is among the executives who expressed doubt in making a deal happen.

"The phone is working," Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen said. "But it's like always, there's a lot of talk and that's it."

"Same as most years," Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian said.

I don't blame this on King Carl. If this is true and teams were only offering a 4th rounder then screw em. Too bad for Tony G but you can't blame King Carl for not pulling the trigger.

CupidStunt 10-14-2008 01:44 PM

Such a statement doesn't preclude a last-minute deal, which it was always likely to be. They'd have already done it if the Chiefs were happy with their best offer to date. Obviously they're biting the bullet to the last second and hoping someone caves.

I only want to trade Tony if we keep Carl and Herm. Now if somehow we can get Clark to whack them two then I would like the new coaches and GM to have a say with what they want to do. Tony and anyone needs to get away from these guys if they can.

An organization that didn't have the respect to throw their HOF TE a 2 yard pass @ home, surely can't be expected to have the respect of cheap trading him so he can win a Super Bowl ???

Carl Peterson = Al Davis w/ just for men gel and botox.

Not that I disagree with your assesment, but I place this squarely on Carl, that "tough son-of-a-bitch negotiator". I was in no mood to see the Chiefs get fleeced for any of their players in a trade, but I'm willing to bet my next house payment that Carl stuck to his guns wiating for either a first rounder or a second/fifth type combo.

RJ 10-14-2008 02:09 PM

Pretty busy day for NFL transactions. Granted, Tony G and Housh and Roy Williams apparently haven't moved, but it's not like there were no major moves yet.

Ravens placed RG Marshal Yanda on injured reserve, ending his season.

A big loss for the Ravens. Yanda thrived in the running game and replacement Chris Chester is a definite downgrade.

Ravens signed WR Ernie Wheelwright to the active roster.

Undrafted out of the University of Minnesota, Wheelwright has good size while lacking ideal speed.

Redskins released S Justin Hamilton.

Hamilton could be re-signed for a second time if the Redskins need future special teams help.

Redskins signed P Ryan Plackemeier.

He replaces sixth-round rookie Durant Brooks, whose punting average ranked dead last in the league.

Blindside58 10-14-2008 02:10 PM

Rotoworld Actually just posted that Dallas Acquired Roy Williams

RJ 10-14-2008 02:11 PM

Holy cow, I take it back!

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that the Cowboys have acquired Roy Williams from the Lions for "at least" one first-round pick.

Because the one thing they are missing is a diva wide receiver. This move smacks of desperation on the heels of an ugly weekend in Dallas. Williams' contract ends after this season, so the move only makes some sense if they extend his deal.

Having Roy Williams to throw to should make Brad Johnson a much better quarterback. I can see why they'd give a first round pick for him.

The Dallas Cowboys are close to a deal to acquire wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions, a source told ESPN.com Tuesday. The trade would involve multiple draft picks but would not involve the Cowboys' first-round pick.
